Do you eat your daily burn or weekly average?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm just wondering how most people approach maintaining - do you eat your maintenance calories every day or do you do an average for the week?  For example, on Wednesdays (my day off) I usually get a 1000 calorie burn work-out, making my burn around 2700.  So, when I switch to maintaining should I eat 2600 on Wednesdays or should I figure out my weekly average and eat that every day?

I'm sorry if this is a repeat question, but I didn't see it in the forums when I did a search.  I'm not quite at maintenance yet (15 or so pounds to go), but I'm getting a little bit nervous about the transition so I want to learn more.  Thanks to anyone who has any advice!  Laughing

I kind of combine them.  I certainly do eat more on days I burn more, but on the days where the burn is pretty high, I do not attempt to eat all that and just catch up later (or earlier).  Of course some days I do feel like I need that super high intake, so I do.  I think just play with it and see what works for you.  Good luck!

I think it might be hard for me to eat the right amount without having a strict goal in mind.  I suppose that's something you learn...

I really think with maintenance, you need to really listen to your body.  After all, it is something you want to be able to live with the rest of your life.  Obviously in the beginning, you will want to still really monitor it.  But really I find that if I listen to my body, it works out pretty much the same.  If your body asks for more consumption on days you burn more, you can answer it.  But if it doesn't, I don't force it.  However, if on days I don't burn as much, my body asks for more, I don't sweat it.

I suppose it is possible that my way does not work for everyone (I think that is pretty much a given really), but I don't think you need to think as much about it as you might think.  Trust me, I felt the way you did when I was close to my goal.  I was really scared about it really because I felt better with more set goals.  But it turned out not nearly as tough as I thought it would be.  You'll get there!

I think nboes is right on target...............what works for one of us doesn't work for all of us.  With my past 20 years in mind if I ever get to my goal weight I will be very concious of what I eat and when I eat it.  I will weigh everyday and take care of that .5 or l lb. that day by increasing my burn and eating within my limit.  I have done it by not worrying about it and it didn't work for me.
