Eat, then exercise in the PM?

Quote  |  Reply

Hey 8-to-5ers. I have this question: After getting home in the evening, do you exercise first, then eat? Vise versa?

I am now in the habit of eating first, taking my sweet time doing not much of anything, then exercising about 8 to 8:30, but sometimes I start as late as 10.

Anyone - particularly singles without kids - have opinions on this issue?

(I had been, months ago, exercising before work, but my schedule is off and I'm waking up too late for that.)

I work 0730-1630, wake up at 0600 though. I'm at the gym no later than 1700 for 1-2hrs, eat, shower, chill, sleep by 2230. I think if I waited that late to work out I'd be way too hyper to fall asleep at a reasonable time. Everyone is different though.

i dont like to eat after 7.30, which isnt always possible, i eat depending on which class i have, if i do a 5.30 running class, then i eat after, cause eating before usually leads to stomach cramps. if im just going to the gym to do cardio and weights then il eat a soon as i get in from work and then workout and hour or so after...if i do eat early however after i work out i usually have a low-cal protein juice or some nuts...just to keep my metabolism going...i usually  go bed before midnight.

Hi! I'm single, without kids and I work out at the gym when I get out from work, usually between 7:30 to 9:30 pm. I eat while at work 1h30-2h00 before exercise, usually a whole-wheat sandwhich with protein filling and a low fat yogurt or fruit. Then I have a light meal when I get home from the gym that includes some carbs, lean protein and veggies (I make lunch my main meal of the day).

i get home about 6:30pm,

eat something between 6:30 & 8,

by 8 or 8:30 im at the gym,

eating dinner by 10-10:30.

and i eat a big dinner which i need after working out. that's how i lost weight last year too.

i think it depends on your individual rhythm, i seem to have the most energy at nights.

I work 8:30-5 during the week and get home around 6. Most of the time I go to the gym right after I get home from work and then I will eat dinner around 7:30 or 8. I also feel I have more energy at night to work out.

I get home around 5, but my fiance doesn't get home til 6 or 6:30. We try to start working out by 7, and then eat after that.

I think the only problem you might have working out that late is messing with your sleep - but if it hasn't, then there's no problem doing it that way.

I bring my work out clothes with me to work and I head to the gym right after, just because it is so hard for me to get motivated to go once I get home. I will usually have a little snack before I leave work though, like some fruit and nuts or sometihng.

Work 8-5. I find it best to bring workout clothes with me and go after work, but I've gotten into the habitat of jogging/being outside.

Anyways, I'll have a snack after work (or at work) and workout. I like to shower after, have dinner and relax for the rest of the evening. Also, I workout better w/o a full tummy.

But do whatever works for you. It doesn't matter what time you eat. It's all about cals in vs cals out.

I get home and eat w my kids at 6:30. They’re in bed by 8 – 8:30. I exercise then – it helps that I have some fitness equipment and exercise at home.

If I start much later than 9p I have a hard time sleeping.

I have to admit if my butt hits the couch at home I'm done for the night.

I start in the office at 7:30am so considering the fact that I have to eat and shower and that my gym doesn't open until 6am it puts the squash on pre-work workouts.

So I am done work at 4:30. I have to eat before working out or I crash and don't have a very good workout - so usually a snack after work then immediately to the gym for a workout.

Also my boyfriend gets home around 6 and since he's a lazy pile I feel like I'm slighted if I have to get my ass to the gym and he gets to sit on the couch - I feel like I miss out on... something.... Lazyness I guess.

Got to get that workout out of the way right away or I end up napping or tv watching.

I work from 8-5 at my day job, and then 5:30-9:00PM.  I've been doing this for over a year, and I've had the best results by working out at night.  I sleep from better too.  First, make sure your diet is straight.  I start by eating a large breakfast (800 calories), a moderate lunch (500 calories) and at 5:15 I eat a 300 calorie protein bar.  No eating after 6:00PM!!  I also mix in two 200 calorie snacks throughout the day for 1800 - 2000 calories total.  I workout from 10:00PM to 11:00PM 3 days per week and 8:00AM to 9:00AM on Saturday.

I'm 5'11" and weight 176lbs, and will lose an addition 11 lbs by the end of the year.  I hope that helps.

Just wanted to point out....there is really nothing wrong with eating after 6pm. Or eating after anytime. Calories in vs. calories out is all that matters.

I'm a teacher, so typically I leave home at 6:45 and get home around 5.  I eat dinner by 6 and then do about an hour long workout every night at about 8.  It works best for me and my schedule.  My next goal is to swim in the mornings once a week, but I need to slowly get used to my schedule after the summer!  I think it just depends on what works best for you!  Good Luck.
