I just bought this book yesterday that as the title says, eat this not that.  I found that it really does have some helpful tips and being a newbie here, I am really open to suggestions from anyone or thing, so if you are interested in putting up a post with some of the tips listed, let me know! I think I heard something about that book on The Ellen Show
yeah, that book is so helpful, and you would be amazed how many calories you can save just by choosing something different. If you want any info, let me know and I will hook you up, I don't mind sharing the wealth!!

I have seen this advertised on the Today's Show website.  They'll list little bits and pieces from the book occasionally.

I would love to have that book!

If there are certain things in the book you would like me to check for, please, feel free to ask!

The author was on Dr. Drew's daytime show, and he had a lot of tips.  He was talking about how if you're eating a raisin bran muffin for bfast, you're better off with an egg McMuffin.  The book looks neat.

I am definitely going out to get the book soon.

hmm...sounds interesting. What were some of the most surprising things you should or shouldn't opt for?
There are so many, if you narrow it down, like some fast food places, I can give you better ideas, but what is also cool about the book is it shows you what should order when it comes to ordering any type of chinese, diner, italian, sports pub, mexican type restaurants.  It also has a section for what to fill your plate up with on holidays, halloween candy, grocery stores and even a section on kids.  Some of the things can be obvious, but some are really interesting. It definately puts in prospective how really, really, really bad fast food and restaurants really are like ruby tuesdays, never order the turkey burger, its terrible for you, or if a place offers no bun burgers, for sure go for that, its amazine the calories you save, and chick fila (however you spell it) almost all of their chicken sandwhiches are under 400 calories, I'd have to look and its late so I'll do it tomorrow, but that would be the best place for a chicken sandwich.  Subway def. has great choices or if your at mc donalds, go for the quarter pounder without cheese or the asian salad.  Enuff out of me for the night, be back tomorrow!!

I bought the book when my fiance and I started dieting. It is pretty handy to have, especially if you tend to go to a lot of restaurants or get stuck having to eat fast food every now and then (I sometimes have to be on the road for work). The guy who wrote it is an editor of Men's Fitness magazine. There are some things I absolutely have to have. Like Mayo with a turkey sandwich (and absolutely no miracle whip for a substitute). The book recommends Mayo w/ canola oil as a substitute so I bought that and you can't taste a single difference.

Some of the more interesting things is just how many calories are in some things. Like how a regular BK Whopper has around 400 calories more than a McDonald's Big Mac. Granted I don't really eat either but shortly after I had this book, those commercials where BK takes the Whopper off the menu started appearing and all I can think of is just how disgusting that triple whopper really is and how these people are freaking out so much. It's really no wonder how Americans can get so obese.

There's also a list of the 10 most horrible foods you can eat. Number 1 is the Outback Steakhouse chili cheese fries appetizer. It has something like 2500 calories in it.

What are some suggestions for eating out at a mexican restaurant?

What are some suggestions for eating out at a mexican restaurant?

Skip rice

Chicken fajitas - put on plenty of onions & peppers but skip cheese & sour cream.

Bean burrito - Ask about the type of beans - if they're whole it could be the healthiest item on the menu. If they're refried, stick with a chicken burrito.

taco on a soft flour tortilla - lower in fat than a hard shell tortilla or ask them if they can replace them with corn tortillas.

taco salad - Basically, nothing healthy. Usually around 900 calories & 55 grams of fat

enchiladas - stay away from. They're tortillas dipped in hot fat, stuffed, rolled, covered with sauce & cheese, & then baked. Two of them carry about 748 calories and 55% of it is from fat.

mole - it's a complex sauce containing up to 40 ingredients, including chilies, ground nuts, spices, & often chocolate. It's a healthier choice over melted cheese & sour cream.

majado - denotes a burrito that is shrouded in melted cheese and then drowned in a rich, salty tomato and chili based sauce

guacamole -  avocados are high in fat but it's mono-unsaturated so it's good for your hear. It also contains vitamin e.

The guys that wrote the book have a column with the same name in Mens Health magazine as well.  It's great!  I'm going to buy it for my boyfriend because he eats out a lot.  Check it out at menshealth.com if you want to try it out.  It's under the health link.

Those are just half the fast food type places to eat at, the book has so much more info..... this was just to let everyone know some of what this book picked out

then menus they have of different places like mexican and diners, italian, american are great too, they show you what to look for

ONLY 12 Bucks for the book on Amazon...

Looks interesting.... Thanks for the tip ktshores

Now I can't wait- My husband said that he ordered it on Amazon so it should be here soon.

I got a copy in my car.  It is a west coast thingy so it is not as helpful if you are in the east like me.  They have things in the book that are not in the restaraunts.

I still find it helpfull.  It does a good job pointing out things that you would think would be Healthy (primarily poultry), but aren't.  For example - I was surprised by how many cals are in a Ruby Tuesday turkey burger.

I also like that it has burgers and pizza.
