Eat to Live--ever done the Dr. Fuhrman Plan?
Has anyone tried following Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live plan? He advocates no meat or dairy, limited nuts and beans, 1 lb of veggies and some fruit. There's more to it but if you;ve tried it I'd love to hear results.
I tried it, and I thought it was quite restrictive and I quit after about a week. I lost about 5 pounds though, and I did not regain them. I am thinking of trying it again though, and this time I'll not worry about the low fat part too much at first, and then work my way in to it. I think it was just a shock to the system! I'm already a vegetarian, but I eat a lot of things I shouldn't!
when I read about it i thought it was restrictive also. if i try it i may kind of improvise....because i can't give up coffee!
I am also going to try an improvised way. My husband and I know we'll feel better if we can stick with it, but it was just a drastic change. And we're already vegetarians! I think I could handle it if I could just have some more fats, like olive oil, to help the taste along. I wish there was a vegan meditteranean diet cookbook, I could handle that!
I follow a modified Furhman ETL plan, and have been for a few years. Even aspiring to it or doing it half the time is a good thing, IMO, with the plan's focus on nutrient dense foods and leafy green vegetables - both raw and cooked.
Limiting refined carbs is one thing I still struggle with. I get plenty of healthy fats in nuts, seeds, avocado, etc.
I also tried this diet and it was an epic fail for me! It's extremely hard to transition into this very restrictive diet quickly. I was already vegan when I tried this and it was still difficult! Cutting out refined pasta for me is a challenge and I eat cold cereal for breakfast. If you can do it more power to you!

It's helpful to think in terms of ADDing more highly nutritious food into your existing menu. Cutting out many things at once almost inevitably leads to feeling deprived, which sets one up for failure. Starting out as a junk food vegetarian, I transitioned into ETL over a month, making small changes every week. Started to falter during high stress and busy times. It's not easy to eat on the run with ETL. It made me want to open an ETL-friendly restaurant. :)
That said, if you stick it out for the initial six-week plan, your tastes and habits really do change. This time of year is great for enjoying big salads and fresh veggies. I originally started in a very cold January, blech!
i agree ostar, adding in versus taking away foods is very helpful
I love love love the book - big reason I became veggie!!
But I didn't do the diet for long - I had a hard time knowing what a lb of veggies was - I'm bad and estimating and I don't have a food scale - and I found it hard to get the required amounts of veggies in, I had no problem eatting fruit and veggies but lbs of greens was harder for me. I'd love to try again maybe not be so hard on myself on an exact amount of the raw greens...
I followed this book religilously for the 6 week plan and have more or less stuck to the principles of the book. I started back in November of last year and after about 4 months I was down 60 lbs. Highly effective.
My big downfall is I starting have indulgence days, which turned into indulgence weekends. I have no problem following it through the week when my schedule is fairly routine, but once Friday night hits it's downhill till Monday morning.
That being said, my weight went up a bit, but has stayed fairly constant. And I'm still 50 lbs lighter than I was. Without doing any excercise mind you.
I plan to do this hardcore again, this time incorporating an excercise plan.
what does this plan entail??
OMG - I just wanted to answer your question - and I had to SIGN MY LIFE AWAY ![]()
Seriously though...I wanted to answer your question - as last year when I began it, I had a very difficult time finding info on it - but tried it anyway....I have an entire blog I started when I began Eat to Live - and Walking - It is www.fighting-hae-fibro.blogspot.com
First thing - I had already been on a mostly vegan diet - as I have fibromyalgia and Hereditary Angioedema and I was trying to treat it with diet - but literally had gained weight when I started eating healthier - I literally started losing weight immediatly when I started ETL - I "took off" - 30 lbs very quickly - and have maintained for a year - More importantly - I feel 100x better since beginning this program.....
Seriously, if you can follow it - It will change your life....Sparks has an entire forum with ETL followers as well - and I have a few recipes on my site - I always planned on adding more - someday

Yes I would do it - and highly recommend it - 30lbs - and counting.....
I tried it but failed as most people on here have commented. However, I do have a large bowl of fruit for breakfast each morning and I try to have salads for lunch. However I do enjoy more variety and something more substantial and creative for dinner so I couldn't stick to this plan completely for very long.
