Quote  |  Reply
im 15 and am in high school, and i always have trouble figuring out what to eat for lunch. i usually bring water and apple, a special k bar and a yogurt which equals about 300 calories. i was wondering how i could incorporate more protein into my lunch so i could feel full for longer. i eat breakfast at 6, a bowl of oatmeal and by 12 when i have lunch i am starving!! i want something healthy, but also with protein that i could bring for lunch

i eat breakfast, half a protein bagel with either jelly or nutella or PB, at 6:20am, so i'm pretty hungry by the time i get to lunch at school, which is around 12. i norrmally have a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread, an apple or banana, and a granola bar or some nuts. also, a carton of milk or some water. =)

and i'm a healthy 15 year old girl, 5'8 , 126 lbs =)

I always have a good variety of fresh vegetables (usually green beans, peas, and bell peppers), and some sort of beans (chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans) as side dishes, and then either a whole wheat wrap or a pita sandwich with a protein (chicken, tuna, shrimp) and a healthy fat (nuts, hummus, olive oil). My lunch is usually around 550 calories. I have breakfast at 6:15 (600 calories) and lunch at 1:30 so I also have a snack in between.

If you are eating lunches at school, I find the best way to fill yourself up is through a combination of complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats (and a side of fruits or vegetables, as they are mostly water and act as a filler if you main meal wasn't enough), and you can do this quite easily by getting creative with sandwiches! Try pairing dark grainy bread with smoked tofu, toasted sesame seeds, sweet chili sauce and lettuce leaves, or take a large tortilla wrap and fill it with wild rice, kidney beans, grated cheddar cheese and a sauce of your choice. For protein, I always have a protein bar as a snack, which is quite helpful in keeping you going and maintaining your protein intake at a healthy level. Perhaps if you would like to be full up longer, make a change in your breakfast? You can try something like a toasted with nut butter - it is healthy and filling!
