I eat sand
I've had kidney stones, and gall stones.
You wouldn't think I'd take up eating sand, would you?
Well, it's in my vitamins. Must be terribly healthy. You might want to chcek your vitamins too. 'Silica' is one of the forms.
So, my question is... how many have taken vitamins with silica and bingo... kidney stones?
Reason: Moved from Food forum to Health & Support
Gallstones and kidney stones aren't actual stones or made of sand. They're hardened masses things produced by your body. And actually silica is supposed to help your kidneys (homeopathically, of course)
I don;t know about gall stones but kidney stones are calcium deposits. Nothing to do with sand...
Random fact: if you did eat real sand, you'd have Pika, a lesser known eating disorder. Lol, I'm sure you wanted to know that.
I vaguely recall eating sand as a kid on the playground...no long term effect, but I don't think I did it very often.
I thought this post was going to be about pica, too!
I'm a nurse in a urology clinic. Vitamins don't cause kidney stones. More likely you're not drinking enough water. In fact, dietary calcium doesn't usually cause kidney stones, either. If your stone is made of calcium oxalate, you can change to a low-oxalate diet (just Google "Low oxalate diet"). The most helpful thing you can do, though, is to really increase your water intake, assuming you don't have any health issues that would be negatively effected by doing so.
Good luck! I'm glad you don't have pica :)
I never said kidney or gall stones were caused by sand/silica but I would say eating silica didn't help. I find it unsettling to have sand in my vitamins. In this post response I see alot of differing opinions.
Apparently if I'm eating sand so are alot of people so you all have pica. Isn't life fun when you attract more replies from people who think you went out and ate a sandcastle, then you do when you are happy you lost two pounds?
Just ironic I suppose.
Just to clarify-I am not an idiot. But I think eating silica or propylene glycol is bad for you.
I was talking about silica. I don't see anyone mentioning a study saying it's perfectly safe, or how many rats were fed silica or what it's long term effects are. I think... this is my last post, talk amongst yourselves.

Sounded like you were trying to tie the two in together from your original post. Maybe you should be a little clearer, that is if you decide to post again. BTW, here is your info on Silica, minus the rats. It was easily obtainable thru google.

That's funny, I came in here expecting a Pika thread :) It's most commonly felt by pregnant women... and cats. My cat gets pika and eats plastic when he's unhappy or stressed out.

Yea, I thought that was great! Got my laugh for the afternoon!
Well usually you get calcium deposits in your kidney stones- not sillica. Secondly, sand is made of sillica, but not the form you swallow it in. The chemical form of sand is SiO2, the chemical equation of Si + O2 = SiO2 changes the molecular and physical appearance of sillica.
So no, unless they say sillicon dioxide, you aren't eating sand.
(Yeah, I get excited when it comes to science stuff...im a nerd that way)
