What can I eat on a "no white" diet?
Asked by k_miss22 on Jan 13, 2009 in Nutrition

I've been instructed by my doctor for health reasons not to eat anything white. I'm just having a hard time deciding what I can and cannot eat.  I know I cannot have sugar or flour, but flour is in EVERYTHING. I know veggies and fruit are okay but they get old. If you can shed some insight that would be great.

Answer

A “no white” diet does not have a clinical definition, but in popular terms, it means to eliminate all foods that are flour-based or contain added sugars.  Foods commonly excluded include white bread, rolls, crackers, biscuits, pizza, pasta, rice, cakes, cookies and all desserts.  You can continue to eat whole wheat bread, cereal and crackers, and any meat, fish, poultry, beans, nuts, seeds, dairy products, vegetables, fruits, and oil.  Discuss your need for the diet with your doctor.  For a high fiber diet, count grams of fiber directly, and to treat high blood sugar, eat fewer carbohydrates, reduce your total calorie intake and increase your activity level to lose excess weight.
