ever eaten something you were TOTALLY convinced was healthy, but found it wasn't at all?
I'm not talking exactly about the everyday, non-dieter blunders like thinking a breaded chicken sandwich will be less calories than a burger [though you can share those too].. I'm wondering if anyone's ever eaten something they TRULY thought was healthy/low-cal and discovered it wasn't nearly what they thought it to be.. or just if you've discovered an unhealthy 'secret' about a healthy food!
I haven't had any experiences like this personally.. but if you have, I'd like to hear! :D
black bean burger at chili's.. it's like 650 calories!
edit/ i didn't ACTUALLY eat this so i don't know if it counts, i saw the info on the menu and was like uhh no way! but it's surprising.
Some restaurants load butter / oil / sauces to their "healthy" options like salads, steamed / grilled vegetables, grilled chicken ... etc. My in-laws frequent Outback and when we would go with them I would try to order items I thought were relatively healthy - but I always suspected that something wasn't quite right with my assumptions of the calorie contents of the meal. I found out that they put seasoned butter on pretty much everything. So I try to avoid Outback as much as possible - but when I do go I ask for no butter on everything.
Oh my gosh----stumbled across this today----
Check out all the foods you could VERY easily order at a restaurant
WITHOUT knowing how LOADED they are---like...LOAAADED!!!!! it's ridiculous!!!!

seriously----check this out!
let me know what you think!
OH--and OUTBACK is specifically listed as having the NUMBER ONE WORST FOOD in AMERICA on this list!
Costco - snack bar
"Low fat" frozen yogurt "very Berry sundae" ahhhh 390 calories!!!! I guess anything with the word "very" and "sundae" can not be trusted.
My hubby and I moved from NJ to Nevada and recently discovered "The Golden Spoon". The nutritional info is posted on the wall. Boy is it yummerfulll!!!(and healthy of course) Have to be careful not to overindulge though. The latest flavor is "egg nog" great combined with the "chocolate caramel".
Thanks revelution3 this is a great post, I am looking forward to reading all the replies. Hope you are doing well!
For me:
roasted vegetables. or roasted vegetable salad
I always make the mistake of getting them.... they are always cold and DROWNED in oil. I would've been better off getting fries as the side. Or even having a pizza.
Muffins (well this was probably a year ago) had one from Tim Hortons every morning. Now I know that its basically all fat and sugar. Such a shame, they are so delicious... but I haven't had one in over 1/2 a year...
Even their fat-free ones were a joke.
when i first started dieting, i still knew nothing about calories, nutrition, etc. for lunch everyday i'd walk with my friend to a nearby grocery store on our lunch break at school and i'd get a large banana and a big croissant. the banana's fine, but i always assumed the croissant was like 100 cals tops, when it was probably 400-600. it was very sugary and buttery. lol @ my lack of knowledge back then.
i also used to say that chips and a chocolate bar were a balanced meal because you got vegetables AND dairy. ![]()
marijoie--ack! 20g?! You'd be better off having lucky charms.. sugar can be a killer when you're lookin for 'healthy' foods too.
oh, and I found one last night..dried cranberries. They're loaded with sugar [30g per 1/3 cup!] and pretty much devoid of essential nutrients.. 3g of fiber. impressive. haha. you may as well be eating 1/3 cup of skittles!
Haha...Erica, I used to do the same thing. I thought french fries and Starbuck's pumpkin bread were "vegetables". It was an honest mistake for me though...at that time when I ate those, I was only nine years old, and didn't know any better. I wish I had that same innocence now...

zebby - well i have no excuse, i was 14-15 when i did that. haha.
even today, i still think of dairy queen blizzards as 'a good source of dairy'
.
Whenever I'm shopping I tend to get one of these instead of crappy foodcourt food, I just looked them up though, and a small pina colada one is 330 calories...oh my god.
Cant believe I had that every single morning, no wonder I gained weight (on top of the other junk I was eating too of course)
I'm also going to add dried fruits.... because *most* of the time they are just super high in calories, loaded with sugar and very few vitamins (kinda dissapointing)
