Eating dietary fats when cutting carbs
So, if you're restricting calories, can you eat more fat and less carbs and not get fat by eating too much fat, if by the end of the day you are still in a calorie deficit?? I bought 418g of canned salmon today, and 1/4 of the can has 10g of fat. I cut my carbs down to about 40g today, the only carbs really came from fat free, sugar free yogurt and 1 spoon of peanut butter, and 1/4 cup of oats. I was eating salad and munching on salmon all day and accidentally ate most of the can. My total calories are around 1400. I'm worried that I ate too much fat. Should I eat less fat with that amount of carbs? Or is that ok?? Does anyone who eats low carbs tell me how much fat and how many carbs they eat??
Eating fats found in fish, seafood, sea vegetables, grasses, flaxseed oil, nuts, seeds, etc will not cause weight gain! In fact they promote weight loss! If I bought that can of salmon I probably would have eaten that entire can and not even thought twice about the fat content! I eat a very low carb diet as well and find that I have no problem with eating lots of protein and not too much carbs because the fat I eat revs me up, although with the protein of course! You should never be worried about eating too much fat unless it comes from baked goods and pork, etc... You should check out www.marksdailyapple.com because 1/2 of his daily calories or maybe even more come from healthy foods and that man (who created the website) is JACKED! ha ha!
If your actual diet is low carbs, under 50 g's, then most of your calories should come from fat. I would do a little research before falling into a diet you know nothing about.
the ONLY way you will gain weight is if your intake calories is significantly higher than your burned calories for an extended amount of time. however, for those of us trying to lose weight, cutting calories means you must make more nutrious and fufilling choices, as you are eating less. this is why i am such an avid supporter of low carb diets. not only do carbs leave your body craving more, but they are also easy to rack up calories with and do little to satisfy hunger in my opinion. so to answer your question, fat is GREAT for a low carb diet, as long as its keeping you within your caloric limits and not all saturated but rather healthy fats.
Don't worry! You will not get fat by eating "too much fat" unless it's a truckload, of course.
In general, fat is so filling that you can't eat too much of it. I've noticed that I can't lose weight until around 60% of my calories are from fat. But that's just me.
Fat for some reason gets a bad rap, when it's actually eating fats *along* with sugar that causes all of the problems. It's the sugar that's the culprit!
If you're dedicated to eating low carb, switch the fat-free sugar free yogurt to the whole milk, plain, unsweetened variety and add stevia for sweetness if you like, or some berries.
Oats aren't healthy either (contrary to what Dr. Oz may say!).
If you're focusing on low carb these sorts of higher carb snacks may stall weight loss.
Munching a bit all day is actually probably a great habit to get into.
Salmon though, I've heard has tons of toxins in it, so personally, I avoid eating it altoghther and supplement with fish oils that are specified to be free of toxins.
And drinking lots of water is important, too.
There are some great books out there on low carb. It's best to get armed with knowledge first, so that it's not so confusing. Any Atkins books and also Protein Power are good ones. Good luck!
Wow!
There's a few pretty difinitive statements in this post.
Oats aren't healthy either
really? since when? what is your source for this earth-shaking information?
*edit: this was in refrence to post # 4
I have said this before on a similar question so sorry that I am repeating myself.
It's calories that are everything. Forget carbs, forget fat, forget protein, forget every single thing you've ever heard about diet and nutrition. Weight control is all about calories. Nothing else comes close. It is basically calories in Vs calories out. Please do not think I am advocating eating lots and lots of fats worth of calories because I am not - but basically your weight will stay the same if you eat your maintenance worth in healthy carrots or fat laden chocolate. I do encourage healthy eating and I believe a balance between carbs, fats and protein is the key to achieving a healthy body and mind. However weight loss, weight gain, and weight maintenance is all about calories, not specific nutrients. If your maintenance level is 2000 calories, and you eat 2500 calories per day, you will gain weight whether those calories came from fat, carbs or protein. Healthy food or unhealthy junk, too much of anything will have the same effect on your weight. Health-wise there is an obvious difference, of course. But, as far as weight control goes, it doesn't matter. Too many calories causes weight gain. The source of those calories (fat, carbs, protein) does not matter. Fat does NOT make you fat and eating the above recommended amount of fat daily will not at all hinder your weight plan.
Will I lose weight if I eat the same food over and over?
You can lose weight despite eating the same food day-after-day as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn. In fact, eating the... Read more
