eating disorder - doctors appointment this week: what questions to ask??
hi just wondering what type of specialists etc i should request to see.
i currently have bulimia/exercise bulimia. i "got over it" by myself and just relapsed last week after 6 months......i obviously need help.
should i ask to see - nutritionist? therapist? or will the doctor just recommend ppl...what other types of questions should i ask?
The doctor needs to get a complete picture of your situation in order to diagnose and then decide how best to treat you. That's true for any medical problem. A patient goes along with a headache thinking they need painkillers but the doctor might spot that the real problem is that they need better reading glasses. So give the doctor a thoroughly honest answer to all their questions ............ symptoms, thought processes, behaviour patterns and let them make up their mind about the most appropriate treatment.
Legitimate questions to ask would be about the success-rate of various treatments, length of recovery time, any measures you could employ yourself. If you have any concerns or reservations ask before you leave the surgery. Also ask who to contact if you get home and suddenly think of something...
The more open and frank the dialogue, the more you'll get out of it.
The doctor should make recommendations for the specialists. Typically you'd see a nutritionist, a psychiatrist and/or therapist, and sometimes your regular physician.
They will ask the expected questions probably: When did it start? What behaviors do you engage in? Sometimes they'll ask if you have had an trauma. They'll probably ask for your lowest/highest weight, and then take your weight/height.
The nutritionist will create a meal plan probably to get you to a healthy weight. The psychiatrist and/or therapist will focus on the mental piece of the disorder, and any other existing disorders (depression, anxiety, maybe family issues). The doctor will focus on your physical health.
thanks for the tips guys. - just wondering does anyone know if therapists are covered by the government or is it just psychiatrists...? i'm a little bit apprehensive to start seeing a physc...i don't just want to start popping ppls i'd rather see a eating disorders therapist.
I don't which government you fall under.... In the UK at least, a doctor can choose to refer someone to the most appropriate service whether that's a psychologist, behavioural therapist, dietician.... whatever. There's nothing scary about psychiatrists and they are the people best qualified to deal with a mental disorder if that's what the doctor diagnoses. Sometimes you have to trust professional advice and work with it.
