eating after fasting

Quote  |  Reply
I fasted yesterday for religious reasons (no food or water) and then had a meal (maybe 500-600 cals) at sundown. Today I'm feeling quite weak and have an urge to keep snacking. I want to get my strength back, so I think I should probably eat a decent amount of food. However, I'm worried that my metabolism has slowed down a lot from fasting yesterday and that I'll gain weight if I eat too much. My expenditure is 1500-1800 cals and I feel too weak for heavy exersize (I might do some yoga this evening though).

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could offer some advice. Should I eat more than my expenditure to make up for yesterday, less than my expenditure because of the slower metabolism, or around the same amount?

hullo, i too fasted yesterday ( G'mar tov) hope it was a meaningful day!

i had more cals after the fast i think, but i treated today as a normal day, with nothing extra! although i did feel a bit weak, i kept myself back from eating because i didnt want to start off the week in a bad way, especially since i know that at the end of the week, i will end up cheating:-)

i hope i do not gain weight as a result of body changing, but we were fasting for a good reason, so let's hope we dont come to bad as a result...

have a good day,

Shelly

I've read on this site that it takes a few weeks for your metabolism to slow down, so don't worry about that.

Think of it as just zig zagging your calories so your body doesn't get used to one amount and get lazy on you.  You can eat a little more today, less tomorrow, and so on, just as long as it all averages to your daily calorie needs.

Me too!

I had 700 cals after sundown but felt sick all night and have been weak and hungry and thirsty all day today.  My plan is to treat this as my "cheat day" and eat maintenance calories, and just hope my poor body doesn't store them all in my hips because of yesterday's starvation.

I fasted yesterday also.

For the first time I was not hungry when the fast ended. But I forced myself to eat about 1,000 calories, which did help me feel better. Today I'm just eating normally. I wouldn't get pre-occupied with cheating today to make up for the lack of food over Yom Kippur.

Even though I'm maintaining, I wouldn't worry about 1 day. Your body won't freak out over 1 day.

Also I don't know what everyone's strategy here was, but I ate pretty substantially before the fast began on Friday night. So if you did that too, then yesterday probably just balanced you out.

how funny is this.. who would have thought we would create a Jewish group without even intending it!!!!!!!!!!! how much will we all eat over Sukkot is the question?

fasting over one day does nothing, i am convinced of it....

This whole month is hard for me with all the fasts and feasts. I try to keep it to proteins and fruits but hey - to err is human!

I'm not doing anything special for Succos. My family doesn't live near me, so I'll just eat like I normally do.

heh, there are a lot of jews on CC.... well I actually also wasn't hungry when the fast ended but my grandparents have a HUGE break-fast (150 people) so there was a lot of food...which i ate... a lot...lol I had half a bagel with lox and cream cheese, a blintz, some kugel, some veggies, and a bunch of cookies and a piece of cheesecake for dessert...I figure I ate about 1000-1200 calories. and I felt fine today, and I even excercised. actually this was the most comfortable I've ever been fasting- I've only been doing it for 5 years or so, and in the past I've barely made it :-/ but this year went well

L'shana tovah!

YAy! I'm not the only Jew!  Haha.  I had anticipated a fast for yesterday but unfortunately I was sick (or fortunately perhaps?) so I ate (at home, didn't make it to break-the-fast w/ family).  Geez.  But I figure one day of fasting wouldn't throw anyone's body outta whack too drastically.  I missed services yesterday, and Kol Nidrei (spelling?) the other night as well.  My father said the Rabbi  gave an excellent explanation as to why we fast.  Or one reason atleast. He said there are people on earth that live like that for days and it's ONE day for us.  One day.  It gives us some empathy for all of mankind and helps us have compassion for those in need.  That was one of the reasons.  I just love the Rabbi here.  Anyway, I hope everyone did well yesterday and is doing well today!
Be glad it's not Ramadan for you guys :P

The best part of my days now is waking up before the sun is even there. It makes it hell to sleep, I'm so excited.

ur right, it is not like ramadan that's for sure!!

Sukkot here will be really busy, loads of people loads of food!! but i think i will eat less these few days so that i can eat a little more on thurs friday...

beefaroni i have never heard that explanation before! what kinda synagogue do u go to?! ithought it was because we were being like angels, and the whole day we act like that - no leather shoes, wearing white etc...

as for hak1031, are you sure that makes only 1000 calories?!?! count the ooil in the kugel for a starter:-)

Hee hee. I wasn't allowed to fast for health reasons. But I wasn't going to abuse it, so I decided to stay on all liquids (Ensure shakes and milk) the whole day. My goodness, it felt SO GOOD TO CHEW at sundown!!

My mum, however, always advises not to OVERSTUFF right after, just have enough to send yourself off to bed, then have a bit more the next day, and DON'T BE AFRAID- it all evens out from the deficit of Yom Kippur.

I just saw this post. I've seen several tips for prefast days, but one one source has mentioned anything about post fast meals. That's from a book called "How to Succeed on Any Diet". She recommends that you 1 eat slowly 2 chew your food properly 3 Pause between courses and 4 Stop when you are full. I found that it did help me quite a bit since I really did focus on my caloric needs rather than my post fast starvation urge.

Have a wonderful 3 day Sukkot for those of you who are outside of Israel. And for those like me who are here in Israel, enjoy the rest day between.

"Have a wonderful 3 day Sukkot for those of you who are outside of Israel."

It's 2 days for us outside of Israel. But this year shabbos begins when yom tov ends.

That's why I said three day Sukkot. Friday for us is chol hamoed and not the second day yom tov like you have. Less fancy meals to deal with.

cant handle how jewish this is becoming! ur right dm that it is not 3 days yom tov but that is what it is commonly known as, since one is not allowed to do any of the forbidden actions for 3 whole days!!!!!!!!!!!

and yeah ronit, it is really difficult to concentrate on anything besides the fact that your starving and u gotta eat!!

What are you gona do about eating ronit?!?! u going to count? Challah alone is such  high calories!!

I've been trying to make my own Whole Wheat Challah. I didn't this week because I've had quite a number of things to do so I'll have to use the regular challah here. Also since it's only me and Joe I can portion control more easily.

Usually I also go to maintenance for the Yom Tovim and Shabbat. My main reason for this is we love our desserts on these days.

"cant handle how jewish this is becoming! ur right dm that it is not 3 days yom tov but that is what it is commonly known as, since one is not allowed to do any of the forbidden actions for 3 whole days!!!!!!!!!!!"

Lol at the Jewish comment.

You're sort of right and sort of wrong.

There are certain actions that can be performed on Yom Tov that can't be performed on shabbos, like cooking, which is why when yom tov falls out on Thursday and Friday, you're theoretically supposed to make an eruv tavshilin, which allows you to cook on yom tov for the shabbos that immediately follows.

Yup, one day of fasting wont affect your metablism (even a few wont do anything, but after that things start to slow down). Which means you can go back to normal eating without any trouble.
Happy Sukkot starting tomorrow everyone!! At least no fasting there :P

Eat, drink, and BE MERRY!!

My holidays are always "free days" ;)
