Eating frequent meals at school
I'm in high school currently and trying to lose weight and speed up my metabolism. During the weekend, I try to eat frequently ..small meals every 2-3 hours...but on weekdays I eat breakfast around 6am and then my lunch hour isn't until 10! I then don't get a chance to eat until 3pm.
Anyone got some tips for frequent eating at school?
I teach High School. You are absolutely right, the usual school schedule is not conducive to good nutrition. Here are some things you might try:
- For an immediate fix, talk to your teachers. Tell them what you are trying to achieve and what you need to do to achieve it. Ask them if you can have a small healthy snack at the beginning or end of the class. Most teachers are concerned about the health of their students and will be willing to help you find a way to make this work.
- Talk to your counselor or school nurse. Enlist their help. They may have ways to help that you are unaware of.
- Work with your student body officers to try to get a change in the school schedule. All students could benifit from a mid-morning nutrition break. (This is a long term project as schools are like dinosaurs, slow to recognize the need to adapt to changing conditions.)

Just sneak a bag of cheerios or goldfish into your purse and eat them during class. I could never eat breakfast in the morning when I was in school (I have a sensitive stomach that early in the morning) so I would bring snacks in with me and eat them during class. My teachers never called me out on it.
ah yes, high school. nothing more to input except to bring some snacks along with you, if the teachers or anyone else doesn't understand, get your parents to write you a note or something. and very good for taking charge & developing good habits at such a young age. wish i would've done that.
I remember that most teachers don't allow eating in class, so maybe in between classes have a bite or two of some fruit, or a single serve pack of veggies? I remember having to run against the tide of students between classes, so I think something like fruit or veggies would be the best thing to snack on quickly, and with no mess.
Do power bars or some sort of low fat trail mix between classes. I used to carry my backpack with me to each class so you can just shovel a handful in your mouth on the way.
