Eating Fruit for breakfast

Quote  |  Reply

I've only been counting my calories for a couple of weeks.  I'm aware of the importance of eating a healthy breakfast and having a healthy diet.  Most of the time I do, and generally have a home made museli made up of good stuff! with some rice milk and fresh fruit which is about 200 calories.

However when I'm really busy in the morning I sometimes just grab a piece or 2 of fruit (peach and apple say) and then eat my usual for the rest of the day ie soup for lunch then a healthy balanced dinner.

The problem is when I miss my proper breakfast I end up only having about 900 cals as I seem to be less hungry for the rest of the day.  I know I should have at least 1200 but dont want to eat for eatings sake.  Having the odd day like this is fine.

I'm more worried that on the odd days I miss my brekie my calorie intake up until 7pm (when I have dinner) will only be about 250 cals max and I'm worried that this will have bad effects on my weight loss.  I dont ever miss breakfast in order to reduce my calorie intake just sometimes time runs away with me and before I know it its lunch!

I'm a great believer in kick starting your system with good "fuel" in the morning, so should I stop worrying if the odd day (once or twice a week) I dont manage to do this??

Thanks

A day or two where you eat less or more than normal is not a big deal.  However, if you're serious about not only losing weight but also maintaining a healthy weight ongoing then the 'bigger picture' is structuring your lifestyle and eating habits so that you get into a good routine - not skipping meals, overeating or undereating.   Irregular eating patterns are an unhealthy habit - and if irregular eating has contributed to you being fat, that's the thing you should be working most to overcome.

You should try getting those drinkable yogurts. Grab some fruit and one of those for protein and you're set for the next couple of hours. Pack some extra food with you too. Sometimes I pack a banana in my purse for work. It keeps me from eating as much.

I can skip breakfast and not really feel it when I'm in a rush, but I really think it makes a difference in the way I eat for the rest of the day.  Also, I'm really bad about time in the morning so I do some of the following things.

1) hardboil a batch of eggs on Sunday night and grab one on my way out the door...lets you start your day with some protein.

2) yogurt or cottage cheese...also convenient, also with protein

3) Bananas have a little more calories than other fruits and come in convenient natual packaging ;)

4) I pre-measure dry cereal into a baggie the night before (often eat on the way to work or while checking emails)

5) I keep my desk stocked with granola bars and premeasured trail mix.
