Eating fruits before bedtime

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone,

Just would like to ask if it is safe to eat fruits 1 or 30 mins before bedtime as I always hear people saying not to eat anything 3 hours before bedtime as our body doesn't have enough time to absorb and digest the food we eat.  I usually feel the need to eat something before going to sleep, so I guess it would be safe if I would just nibble on 2-3 fruits (banana, apple, grapes) rather than eating something heavy.  Please advise.

Thanks.

i would think if it were to keep you from eating something like junk food, it would be much safer, especially if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach (or about 3 hours after eating anything else).

I am not an expert, but I should be, I have read enough any way.  I would say it would depend on your goals, if you are trying to loose weight, you are correct, in not eating 2-3 hours before bed.  I like to drink a hot drink, like decaf tea or herb tea, or sugar free hot chocolate.  I would say if you must eat,  I would eat protein.

Actually there is another thought on this: if you think of your metabolism as a furnace that you have to keep stoking to keep working then you would want to give it something before the long period of time between bedtime and morning...the trick is to keep that fire burning longer try some (small amount) of protein like apple with peanutbutter for instance or celery with peanutbutter.  Also, eat something early when you first wake up even if it's only a "snack" b4 breakfast.  This has really helped me.  If you think of your metabolism all day like that....not wanting it too hot or too cold, but right in the middle, then you will burn the most calories and have an efficient metabolism.  Hope this helps!!
