Eating healthy causing one to feel sick when they eat unhealthily

Quote  |  Reply

I've been eating healthily for almost a month now and have lost 19.8 lbs so far.  Today's my birthday (turned 17) so I decided to have a cheat day and not worry about what I eat today.  I used to eat really unhealthily and would eat one of the boxes of safeway cookies in about 2 sittings all in one day so I got one of those boxes for my cheat day today.  I had a cookie and a half and felt like I was going to puke (there's 16 cookies in the package).  Has this happened to anyone else?  Is it the sugar or what that causes the nausea?  I guess it's a good thing long term because I'll eat much less unhealthy food on my cheat days because it makes me sick, but I don't enjoy my "treats" as much as I used to : (

It happens to me. I get sick when I eat unhealthy. I want to say congrats to you for losing almost 20 lbs, however I am concerned that you are going too fast. It can be unhealthy and dangerous to lose more than 2 lbs per week. Just a thought. Search for other posts on this topic and you will find that a lot of people on this site will agree with me. Good luck on your journey, and I hope you find a healthy balance.

That happens to me too. After eating nothing but fruit, veggies, meat, and drinking water for a week or two and then I munch on some chips or "goodies" I feel sick but mostly I just feel icky. I get achy, feel gross, and slow down a bit.

It makes me a tad bit sad because I love junk food and "goodies" so knowing that when I eat it, it makes me feel that gross so I can't makes life a bit depressing lol

I have just been on this particular diet for about a week, but I have stopped eating fried foods for a month now. On the 4th I gave in and had a fried chicken sandwich and fries and I can't tell you how ill I felt. I've never been able to deal with high amounts of sugar like donuts or cookies or sodas, and while I have it occassionally if I have it too many times in a week I'll start to feel sick. So, you're not alone. :)

If you would like a substitute that's still got some sweet flavor but isn't as sugary as cookies, I'd suggest graham crackers. I love graham crackers. Do you eat a lot of fruit? You might try fruit and yogurt too.

This same thing happens to me. My body has gotten used to eating more healthful foods. If I have a free day cuz it's a holiday or someone's birthday, and I overindulge in junk food and rich desserts like cake, fudge, brownies, etc... my system can not handle it and I wake up the next morning feeling like I have a hangover.

If I were to eat the same amount of calories from things like cheese, peanut butter, olive oil, potatoes, meat, etc...  I might feel more full the next day, but certainly not sick.

The same thing happens to me constantly. Now that I'm upping my calories and not counting as meticulously, I decided to spring for a chicken strip combo meal at McDonalds (including the fries and everything). I used to eat them alllll the time (hence why I needed this site in the first place), and I hadn't had them in YEARS. They were good for the moment they were in my mouth, but after that it all went downhill. I felt sick, bloated, and just plain gross. Too much grease.

This happens to me CONSTANTLY! I have to be so careful of what I eat sometimes. After changing my eating habits for a year, I went to an old favorite restaurant of mine. I got a fried chicken alfredo pasta dish loaded with fat and calories.. and I literally spent the entire night throwing up and sweating. My body completely rejected it. I am sad that I can't eat my ex-favorite dish anymore, but I'm glad my body is healthier now!

That's, like, three separate levels of overindulgence. It's kind of awesome in a gross-sounding way, like a Krispy Kreme bacon cheeseburger.

I'll chime in with a "me too" as well.

My brother-in-law and his family visited over the past weekend, and I stopped counting for two days to enjoy myself. I still ate lots of fruits and veggies, but I also made them a Southern breakfast of homemade biscuits, gravy made me with butter, and thick-sliced bacon. (And a side of cantaloupe!) After one biscuit with gravy, my stomach felt like it had ten pounds of rocks in it.

I also consider it a positive that it didn't feel good. Give me a spinach and strawberry salad, please.

It can happen.  That's largely why I've never gone totally off the "unhealthy" stuff.  I don't want to be in a situation where I'm starved, I NEED food, and my only choice is continue starving or eat and be sick.  So I continue to eat some "unhealthy" foods a couple times a month--usually eating out.  Maybe pizza (but rarely--months in between).  Pasta with cream sauce of some sort, another time.  A hamburger with just a handful of fries.  Not large portions, at all.  Just enough to maintain my "immunity", so to speak.  And another benefit being that I don't feel anything is "forbidden" and give it that allure.

LOL ... this is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while!! Yes, continue to eat the things that make you sick (make no mistake, even if you don't feel sick because you eat it all the time, it's still making you sick). That makes so much sense.  You should be shocked that you allow yourself to put this stuff in your body when it's so obvious that your body doesn't want it!

There is no reason to need unhealthy food other than your own desire to eat it. You can walk into any gas station and buy a pack of nuts or a milk that will tie you over until you can get home. There's always a subway/sandwich shop around. Find a grocery store and buy a banana.

Me too! Apparently this proves your body likes healthy food :) When I eat anything with grease, I'll be on the toilet all night. I even get headaches when I eat cookies. Simply your body likes the natural food, so it's fighting back at ya. If you incorporate it into your life a little at a time, your body shouldn't fight you so hard. I enjoy my cheat days now that I am maintaining (don't worry, it's not like you'll never get to eat a safeway cookie again) but it might take some trial and error to start.
