LOCKED TOPIC

Eating what I know is healthy.

I love bran cereal. It's the only food that I don't really chew and spit, unless I've had waaaaaaaaay to much of it. I love the taste.

Other foods I spit out cause I'm really thinking about my bran cereal. OR when I'm bored i do the chew and spit.

Chewing and spitting is disordered eating and a sign of an eating disorder.  Are you getting help?

Swallowing the food helps avoid spitting it.

This is considered an eating disorder, and I suggest either quitting, or if you have a problem quitting, then talking to a counseled or parent, or someone about it.

But even I'll admit, I chew/spit a snicker bar once :( Not something I'm proud of, but I understand your thought process behind this behavior. It can get out of control.

It sounds like you don't have a healthy relationship with food.  Food is what we take into our bodies to give us energy.  It's one of life's pleasures!

I agree with happyteacher and encourage you to get help.  If you're a high school or college student, you can talk to your school nurse/school's student health center.

The more information you get, the better.  This is not the way to live life!

Thanks for the replies. See the thing is. I LOVE FOOD way too much. But I have the scardom of getting fat AGAIN. I was never happy about the way I looked until now. And it's hard. I LOVE food and am scared of food. I don't want to be fat. but I've already screwed myself on the calorie intake thing. I'm working on it. I want to talk to a school student health center and plan on it. Thanks!

More suggestions and idea, etc PLEASE RESPOND!!

My suggestion is to get help.

Chewing and spitting causes tooth decay, as well as stomach ulcers. If you keep this up you will have no teeth left in your mouth (or rotting, black ones) and a terrible time digesting food. It's not pretty.

Please seek help.
What else are you eating besides your bran cereal?

Can you tell me everything that goes in your mouth for an average day?
Find healthy foods that you enjoy and substitute those for junk. Try different fruits, yogurts, veggies, nuts, etc. to satisfy your munchies.

Often we binge on things we can't have because it's like once you allow yourself a tad, it's like a crack in a dam: the whole thing crumbles, just like your will power (what is it today with me and analogies?) So allow yourself your cereal. You can fit it into your diet everyday!

Also, when you open a new box, try portioning out servings in sandwich bags. That way, if you have an urge to have some bran cereal, you can grab yourself ONE bag and then exit the kitchen.

MORNING:

** Wake up. Eat 1 cup of bran with adequate soy/almond milk with blueberries and cinnamon.

- 2 hrs later.

** eat another small bowl of some sort of cereal.

-2 hrs later.

** I used to have another small 200 calorie snack. Now I chew and spit to get me through to another 2 hours which I will have "lunch"

AFTERNOON:

a) quiznos cup of chilil

b) Soupplantation (cup of soup)

c) panda express: Vegetables. eggplant. sometime meat is included.

d) 1 Fuit i.e. apple, nectarine, plum.

e) GoldenSpoon mini size.

I eat one thing of each. I basically try to spread my calories to 200 for every 2 hours.

But it's the urge of wanting MORE food, but WANTING to eat again in 2 hours.

but in the mid afternoon.... a snack disapears....

DINNER: Small bowl of whatever is cooking. or GORGE on broccoli, squash, zuccini, any kind of vegetable.

MIDNIGHT: Midnight Cereal or dinner!

The thing is: I LOVE to eat the healthy stuff, but want toooo much of it. Love the taste.

For example: Right now it's 5:10pm in the afternoon. I've already had my allowed 1200 calories for the day! It's been like this the whole week! Going a bit over....

1200 calories is way too few calories for you.

There's your problem.

That's why i've been trying to excercise so I can eat more calories. I want to but am scared at the same time. i.e. gaining weight. I already know I'm going to be gaining weight from muscle which will be rebuilding. I just don't want to be a pudgy person, it runs in the family.

Hi katscrafic!

Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself? (Age, height, weight)

Chewing and Spitting is not a commonly known eating disorder but it is one.

This can be just as harmful as not eating since your body is not getting the proper nutrients. Because you are here telling us about this, I am assuming that you are wanting to and ready to talk to others and possibly receive help. I think this a great first step.

Do you have someone close to you (a parent or other family member) that you can talk to?

Please talk to someone soon about this. These are just some of the effects of C&S:

*Swollen glands
*Mouth Sores
*Cavities
*Cracked teeth
*Sore throats
*Irritated or ulcerous stomachs

Here are some details of C&S listed on ANRED site.

Chewing and spitting

  • The person puts food in his/her mouth, tastes it, chews it, and then spits it out.
  • Some people believe this behavior is a separate eating disorder. It is not. It is a calorie-control strategy commonly seen in anorexia nervosa, and sometimes in bulimia and eating-disorder-not-otherwise-specified. The person is creative, allowing some experience and enjoyment of food but avoiding all but a few calories. Since essential nutrients are not incorporated into the body, chewing and spitting can be just as harmful to health as are starvation dieting and binge eating followed by purging.

An extremely helpful site to check out when you are talking to your family member(s) is something-fishy.org.

On the left hand side their are tabs for treatment finder, Recovery: Reach Out, and much more.

We will be here for you 100%... for support. But we can not give you the proper treatment and help that you need as we are not educated in Eating Disorders.

Please feel free to PM me if you ever need someone just to talk to or need help finding information.

((((hugs))))

If you could eat what you wanted for a day, what would you eat?

Just an average meal plan that you would have to keep down and not spit up.

Keep in mind that you should consume

3-5 servings of fruit,
3-8 servings of veggies,
3-6 servings of carbs,
3-5 servings of proteins,
3 servings of dairy
3 servings of  good fats

Try this exercise.  You will be surprised by how much you can eat following this without guilt and wanting to spit afterward.

NOOOOO

my cousin has been doing this for over 5 years

she has gained tons of weight while somehow not eating anything. it doesn't work! it is bulimia!

for her it is an obsession, it has ruined her life. all she does all day is chew and spit. she stays up all night to do it. she does it all day. she spends hundreds every week on sweets to chew in the basement where no one can see her. she eats everything in the house. she can eat a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk in just one day. nothing in the house is safe for anyone else to eat cause we can see what she does to it. lately she has started re-eating the slime that she spits out. I don't know what to do to help her. if anyone mentions it she gets so angry. I'm so afraid for her life.

Don't even start this cycle! I was anorexic for a few months until I "discovered" c&s. Then I did that for a few weeks, which QUICKLY spiraled into bulimia. Its such a slippery slope, not to mention extremely dangerous by itself. Stop and get help before you're too far in. Trust us, your life is at stake!

Chewing and spitting is an unhealthy habit, and one that is commonly connected to an eating disorder such as EDNOS (Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.) Chewing and spitting is often considered to be a precursor to more dramatic behaviors and should be considered a warning sign.

Specifically chewing and spitting presents the problem that digestion of simple sugars is started in the mouth while the digestion of the nutrients doesn't occur until food hits the stomach or the intestines.  So you get more of the calories than you think you do and next to none of the nutrition.

Do I Have An Eating Disorder? can help you determine if you have an eating disorder.

You need to EAT in order to lose weight in a healthful manner, with a REASONABLE deficit of 500 to 1,000 calories and not more.

I encourage you to check out the information in the library from our Eating Disorder Guide, Matthew Tiemeyer.

Everyone can tell you about the potential harm of disordered eating until they are blue in the face and it may not faze you, as I totally know how hard it is to keep a logical perspective when wrapped up in a food obsession...But maybe this will serve as some motivation for you to curb the C&S;

Most docs and nutritionists believe almost half of calorie consumption takes place in the mouth, via saliva glands...So for every 250 calorie candy bar you may spit out you are most likely absorbing about 125 calories...

You can get fat chewing and spitting...Something to keep in mind.

I just want to point out that this can also lead to exercise bulimia. Working out with the sole intention of being able to eat calories.

So basically, you need to stop thinking of different WAYS to intake less cal and start working on your issues because there are obviously some issues here. No matter what you decide to do, chew&spit, run and run and run so that you can have a 1000 cal defecit, whatever it is, it will worsen. Help yourself before its too late.

GOT to be kidding... for everyone's sake. I was really gonna stay out of this thread, but this needs to be addressed so other people don't read & believe it.

A "better" eating disorder... are you joking? Hello, oxymoron! & no, the "side effects" cannot be avoided by "planning." You can't plan for your stomach to not release digestive acids. You can't plan for your saliva to not absorb calories.

& I'm an "advisor" that's HAD an eating disorder. I know what I'm talking about. I've recovered & absolutely refuse to accept your generalizations. If someone truly wants to change, they can. It's not easy, but nothing that's worth it ever is. Plenty of people recover from EDs.

I'm having a really hard time believing this "internet research" if it's led you to a post like this. What you're saying isn't only incorrect, it's dangerous. We don't encourage EDs here.

 OR . . . . i do the chew and spit.

No one in this forum is allowed to be supportive of behavior that anyone might term to be an "eating disorder" or "disordered eating".  Any post judged supportive will simply be deleted by the moderators.

Because of this, anyone who posts behavior that can be defined in this way, like "chew and spit" will  receive only negativity from responding forum members> Just lots of different ways to tell you that "you are sick and need to fix yourself".   This, of course, encourages one to keep from speaking of one's behavior which falls into that category, making this forum just one more place someone with an eating disorder needs to be careful to keep secrets in order to avoid verbal abuse.

LOL, you're still being ridiculous.

OBVIOUSLY you can't come on to a site devoted to health & encourage someone to continue with an eating disorder. Do you really not see why there's an issue with that?

& sure, the responses could force you to "keep secrets," [which you've already been doing anyway, so no big there] or you could actually listen to them & try to get help. Obviously we're hoping for the latter, which is why there are so many responses encouraging her to get help.
