Eating Less Than 1000cals a day....Good Or Bad?

Where is the fruit and the vegis.... you are not giving yourself the food that you need to be healthy.

That is a very unhealthy diet....

How many calories do the site tools suggest you eat to lose weight? I'm willing to bet it's over 1000.

In general, it is agreed that all women need at least 1200 calories a day to lose weight (men, 1500 calories). This is based on peer-reviewed studies done by places like the Mayo Clinic that show that eating too little leads to your metabolism slowing down, and potential ill effects from lack of nutrition.

I would suggest that you use the site tools, determine how many calories it suggest you eat a day to lose weight and eat them. These site tools work. :)

BAD!  Its just that simple.  I don't even need to write anything else.

Well, that's one meal for the day. Where's the other two?

I'm SURE you already know that that is not NEARLY enough food for one day. It's not how often you eat, it's WHAT you eat that matters. Fruit. Vegetables. Whole grains. Low-fat dairy products. MEAT or an approved substitute if you're vegetarian. Not canned soup and pre-packaged hydrogenated msg-filled snacks.

I agree that the site tools work well for normal people. I on the other hand have the crapiest metabolism. My Mom's side of the family is huge. So I constantly have to fight that. at one poiont i was running 6 miles a day for 6 months and did not lose anything. There was a month where I ate nothing but one can of soup a day and maybe a slice of bread with it and lost 20lbs in a month. That was pretty stupid of me. That was then though.

Now, I am taking Centrum Cardio. Its not like i'm not eating though. The other day I had shrimp and veggies, and 2 days ago I had half a chicken quesadilla. I mix it up. So I am not starving. On top of that I drink alot of water through out the day.

I might suggest that starving yourself is not going to help your metabolism.

As I said, peer reviewed studies show that .. if you eat too little.. your metabolism eventually slows down to match up with that. This is called "Starvation Mode". I'm sure you've heard of it.

Have you gone to see a doctor or a nutritionist?

I have heard of it of course. But the thing is, I am not hungry doing what I am doing. I feel fine, i'm sleeping great, i don't get tired at work. I mean all in all, I think this works for me. I'm sure it isn't the best way or the way a Nutritionist would recommend. I guess untill problems arise then I am going to stick with it.

Don't get me wrong though. I love to eat and it is hard for me to stick to any kind of diet. I mean my regular eating consists of Taco Bell, Shakes, Pizza, and lots of beer. So I have cut all that out and i am only going to treat myself to a beer or two when I reach each one of my goals.

As far as my metabolism goes, I guess I should go see a doctor and make sure that it is working properly. Like I said though, I do run quite a bit. That has to help my metabolism a bit.

You have a crappy metabolism because you are eating less than 1000 calories a day.  If your calorie deficit (difference between total calories burned and total calores consumed) is more than 1000 calories for too long, then your metabolism crashes and it's nearly impossible to lose weight.  Not to mention that you will be losing lean muscle and organ tissue and you will likely feel like hell.

Boost your metabolism by closing the deficit to no more than 1000 calories a day.

Actually, kraka.. No. Jogging alot, when you already eat too little, is probably not helping your metabolism at all.

Do yourself a favor and talk to a Doctor. Let him or help you.

hi,  so this is a guy right cause 1000 is too low for me and i am a girl.  here this will help you alot 8am 12 noon and 5pm eat a piece of fruit and a cup of vegs,  all those processed foods are not good for you...but it is all you seem to be eating, i am guessing its american cheese slices in your sandwitch,  thats not even real cheese! when you eat like this for a long while you start to think it is normal and when that happens you could get really sick,  i know i have disordered eating,  i see it in your story.  eat those vegs and fruits and up slowly,
calories aside, you arent getting enough nurtients. Fatty acids, minerals and vitamins support your metabolism and energy, a lack of these will cause your body to not burn as effectively as it should. Even if you are trying to keep your calories low you can still eat so furit and veg. A huge bag of spinach has less than 100cals, a whole **** less than 100cals etc so load up on the green stuff and least then you wont feel hungry and your metabolism will have the support it needs

Well that's your problem right there...you are eating WAYYYYY under your daily expenditure and your body is holding on to every calorie you put into it in an attempt to keep you healthy.

You are not giving your body the nutrients it needs to survive, let alone lose weight. Up your diet to 1500 cals at least, add some fresh veggies and lean proteins, and see where that gets you.
I do eat veggies and fruit. Just not everyday. I love eating shrimp and mixed vegs. I snack on carrots and what not.

I guess my biggest problem is that I am in the Military and I have to maintain a certain weight or I get wrote up. I wouldn't worry about it other wise.
how can you possibly be eating like that in the military? Surely you wont have enough energy to make it throught the day?

You must have been eating more than this before otherwise you wouldnt have reached your 200+ lbs.

Eating less than 1000 calories a day is not going to help you lose weight or maintain your weight.  If you continue to keep that diet you are going to have serious health repercussions.

Add some healthy foods like fruit, vegetables, lean meat, more vegetables, fish, more vegetables and soy to get your calories up to 1500, please.  Any medical professional would be horrified at a grown man eating less than 1000 calories a day.

Thats the thing. I have been eating nothing but crappy foods. Fast food, drinking alot of beer and eating alot of pizza. That's what got me over the 200 mark. Even before I joined the Military though, I went to boot camp weighing in at 198. When I got out of boot camp, I was 178. I put most of that back on and maintained around 190 or so, but I was also 18, 19. I am 26 now and just can't maintain. When I hit 25 is when I put on almost 50lbs in a year. It just seemed like my metabolism stopped. I mean who puts on that much weight in a year doing the exact same thing? I really don't know. Oh wait, me.
sounds like you need to learn basic healthy eating rather than yo-yo dieting and then gaining it back quickly with junk.

Cut the diet. Start eating as much as you like of fruit, veg, lean meats, and grains like brown rice, brown bread etc. I promise that if you fill up on these and then just have the occasional treat youll find that your weight will drop and then happily maintain itself. I really dont believe that young, fit guys who exercise need to cut the intake so low.

Youll probably find that eating healthy monday-friday and then relaxing a little at the weekends will still make a huge difference to how you look and feel.

Your metabolism didn't stop during that time that you gained 50 lbs.  You were eating a lot more food than you thought, and most likely exercising less.  If your metabolism had really crashed, then you wouldn't have been able to get out of bed.

That being said, your metabolism WILL stop if you continue to eat so little food.  Check your daily calories in and your calories out and make sure you have no more than a 1000 calorie deficit.  Do that, and you will maintain a raging metabolism while losing body fat.  Also, add some HIIT and weight lifting to your exercise plan to keep the metabolism fueled.  Running is great, but HIIT and weights do way more to keep the metabolic furnace stoked.

If you don't believe us, read through the forums.  You will find at least one posting a day of someone saying, "Why am I not losing weight?  I only eat 1000 calories a day!!" These people give up and go back to their pizza and beer lives while the rest of us continue to plug on and are happy and healthy.

Besides what everyone else has said here, canned soups have a TON of sodium. That is not good for your heart, cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. If you feel the need to eat soup all day then you should be making it yourself.
I agree about the sodium levels in canned soups. That's why I get the low sodium, sea salt cans. Usually I drain the liquid out anyway.

Ok, well I haven't been on this diet long so I will take everything everyone said into consideration. Thank you to all that provided info.
