Eating More, Earlier

Quote  |  Reply

Right now I eat about a 400 calorie breakfast, and about a 500-600 calorie lunch. I then go to swim practice in the afternoon and by the time I eat dinner I'm normally ravenous and I end up eating ALOT at dinner (it's at a dining hall so I can't really estimate especially since the dinner is different every night but my breakfast and lunch are normally the same). Since the semester is drawing towards finals I am now working out normally in the morning since I can't afford to drop all my work at 3:30 and commit to a 2 hour practice which kills my afternoon. Therefore, if I work out in the morning, would it be more beneficial if I now upped my calories at breakfast, upped my calories slightly at lunch, and then at dinner ate very light since I don't need to replenish my energy stores? Whenever I work out in the morning now I still seem to be ravenous at night and then i feel guilty for eating so much when my workout was more than 12 hours prior. Should I adjust how much eat and when during these days when my workouts are much earlier?

Well working out on full or empty stomach is really not all that good. What time do you work out after you wake up and have breakfast? Probably better is to keep breakfast the same, then eat something like a recovery drink after the work out. Keep lunch the same, have something mid afternoon and have lighter dinner. Basically eat smaller balanced meals through out a day, rather then three big meals.

I work out before I eat breakfast..and it's hard for me to have smaller balanced meals just because of my class schedule and the fact that the only food I really have access to is at the dining hall. I have practically nothing in my room besides a stale box of Fiber One.

One thing that I was warned about exercising if you haven't eaten anything at all is that your body might not treat it the same way as it does when it has fuel. My Mum upped her exercise by taking another walk before breakfast, but saw no physical change. She went back to see her dietician, who told her to have a cup of OJ before she went walking so her body would have something to work off of. Once she did that, she noticed changes immediately.
