eating more, but getting hungrier...good or bad?

Quote  |  Reply

in the past 2 weeks, i've been upping my calorie intake to make up for calories burned from exercise and to gain weight overall, eating anywhere from 2500 calories to 3000 calories. however, i've been noticing that some days, i get so hungry that i binge like crazy in order to eat that high number of calories. i don't want to be doing that. i want to eat healthily. sometimes, i'm hungry after only just an hour or two after my last meal.

i know that i shouldn't feel bad for eating so much, especially since i'm trying to gain weight, but it seems like most people have trouble eating more in order to gain weight and i don't know why i'm different. also, is it a bad thing to be so hungry? i feel like there might be something wrong with my metabolism. either that or my body really feels like it should be eating that much. if that's so, i'm worried that after i'm a normal weight, my eating habits won't change :(

so, what's the deal? and what should i do?

As you eat more and exercise more you're bound to have a big appetite.  That's 100% dead normal.  There's a big difference between 'eating more' and 'bingeing'..... So what if it's only 2 or 3 hours since your last meal?   A lot of people eat every 2 or 3 hours as a matter of course.   A meal, a snack, another meal....  It's not unhealthy to be hungry or to eat again if you need it...  which it sounds like you do.

There's nothing wrong with your metabolism at all.   And as you get to a healthy weight you'll probably find your appetite will settle down.  Enjoy your food.  It's all good.

What are you eating? If you are eating junk, simple carbs and not a balanced diet that could be it. If you body is not getting proper nutrition. The right kind of vitamins and minerals from food you will have really bad cravings. Are you eating enough good fat and protein?

im on the same boat, aren'tyou enjoying it? yeah im concerned about going the other way (anorexic to binger) but i HOPE my apetite will settle down, and i WANT metabolim to speed up, but the body is a weird thing, you cant control it, just support it. don't worry i scoff down 4000cals and am gaining terriby fast, i hope its just water weight, but it hasnt subsided after a week and a half..... mum isnt worried, just happy that im gaining, i cant see how it can help. btw i dont plan to start eating less until im 55 kilos and a in no way concerned about my fast weight gain>>>>11 pounds in one and a half weeks

remember a 'binge' is like 2000 cals i one siting, i wonder around the kitchen grazing after dinner on aout 1000cals, not inluding dinner :P

i eat more 'junk' food than a normal person, but im gaining, on a cellular level i doesnt matter what the food is it wil still convert to the same fat molecule, just some have more nutrients than others. so i eat a healthy persons diet for my 3 main meals then my snack will be yoghurt, ice cream, nuts and chocolate.

but anyway, yes its normal to feel more hungry and eat like a horse, it's all to do with leaving starvation mode and your leptin levels (apetite hormone). i honestly dont know if i am hungry, i just get cravings towards foods (due to apetizing texture etc.??) and the fact is i wanna be healthier asap so whatever, ill eat it. im 6 kilos (12 pounds) from my goal im nearing the end of this roller-coaster, it's been a fun/tasty recovery :) so i will make a healty meal plan once at a healthy weight and have my supportive mum (support is important) enforce it unil it's maintainble and im used to it (2 weeks?) you need support, someone your close to, to help you fro going over, otherwise alot of self-control.

the physcological recovery is harder than the physical and should be dealt with first, but you seem sane enough :P

i used to feel bad but i need to gain. I'll let my body decide what it wants to do ONCE ive reached normal weight, this also dodges relapse. besides its safer being overweight than underweight even if i do go a tad over. if you can change your eating habbits once you are strong enough to do it gain.

ppls comment on my post too please, i still am in the dark a bit. i would really lie answered; will apetite subside? and how/will metabolism speed up??

Holbee... You seem to have a healthy attitude to the whole thing.   Sounds like it's going really well.  A week and a half is a very small amount of time in the grand scheme of things.  You have to judge your progress over the next month or two to get a clearer picture and iron out a lot of the initial ups and downs.  Quite a lot of that 11lbs will be your body replenishing its carbohydrate and fluid stores so you could well see a 'down' before you carry on 'up' and wonder why.  It takes about 6 - 8 weeks to replace a bad habit with a good habit.  So keep that support close for as long as possible.  Your mum sounds very sensible!!!

If you keep to your three square meals a day plus the snacks you will start to increase your 'food confidence' (a good phrase I heard the other day).   You'll become more relaxed knowing that another meal isn't too far off and this will slow down the ravenous appetite... which is partly leptin but also partly your survival instinct kicking in.  Your metabolism is already speeding up... eating more does that.

You're doing everything right, and I'm glad you're finding it fun.   Keep smiling.

i know very little of that weight is fat for keeps and i dont want to see a 'down', but i will, iv been expecting one. but even then i cant see recovery taking too much longer

yeah ive started having more frequent snacks, my problem is im out from 1-6pm (when i have dinner) so im still hungry after dinner because of that huge gap so im gonna start carrying granola bars around in my pockets :)

thank you! i just hope my attitude stays positive, seriously, seeking help is the best thing you can do, and to be open.

im not overly concerned about becoming a binger. i physically cant purge, mum wouldnt let me over exercise and promises to manage my habbits if they get too bad, after i gain the weight the house wont hold any 'binge' foods so....i just try to worry about one thing at a time.

thanks for the replies!

i'm glad to know i'm not the only one with this eating problem, although i DO want to resolve it by eating normally and not saving my calories for a nighttime eating fest or something.

what good sources of fat and protein do you recommend?

thanks and holbee, i hope my appetite will subside too once i reach my goal weight!

Cottage cheese, natural peanut butter, tuna, chicken, beef, olive oil, olives, avocado, beans
