Eating Secretly = binging

Quote  |  Reply
I've made another thread about this problem of mine. But I really want it to end. The binging part. Because I'm often home alone, I eat alot. I even get complaints of "where's the rest of the cookies" or "what happened to the peanut butter?".  But I find that I hide food in my room. O__O Like when someone's at home, I would go up to my room and start eating the cookies that I hid, or the candies. Just yesterday I finsihed a jumbo bag of large marshmallows. And I would sometimes wake up at night just to eat like 5 chocolate cookies or something. This problem used to be really small. Because I used to just binge once ever week, then once every 3-4 days, then now everyday. And I feel really guilty and fat after binging, yet I can't stop myself.

Have you tried to keep healthy food (vegetables, lean crakers, fruits, etc) in your room, to binge on?  I used to have a night-eating problem...and I solved it by allowing myself to eat a little snack before bed time.  Since it is allowed, I do not feel the urge to eat fat/sugary food, and I plan it in my daily cal intake.

Take it one step at a time :)  But first, maybe you should simply control the kind of food you binge on, and allow yourself to eat cookies/marshmallows/peanut butter only once every week.  Because, removing them totally from your diet will increase the binges!  The best thing to do is to include them in your calorie counting.  Do more exercise to cover for it...

I can't resist frozen yogurt....I can eat the whole pint in two days, haha!  But at least I know myself, and log it in my food log...as well as exercise a little more on the days I buy frozen yogurt.

Yeah but whenever I'm to choose a healthy snack or an unhealthy snack, I would always choose the unhealthy one. Like at a store, when I want to buy a chocolate bar, I would always buy the one with like a gazillion calories than opposed to the one with only 100 caloires :(
I have the same problem! It's like if I'm hungry and I start eating, it's really, really hard to stop, even when I get full. Plus, it would start out healthy, then get to a point where I would just say, "screw it. I've already ruined my day, might as well go all the way down." BAD mindset! I've found that, for some reason, for me out of sight = out of mind. If I close the door to the pantry and/or leave the kitchen, I'm a lot less likely to go get food. Maybe I'm just lazy, I dunno. I just know that if I'm distracted, doing something else, or at least not WITH the food, I'm not going to binge on it. If being home alone is tough (and trust me, I feel ya there too!) then try starting an activity right before everyone else leaves, like watching a movie or a TV show, doing homework, or something that you're unlikely to just stop in the middle. Maybe if you distract yourself before you're alone, once you are alone, you can keep it up and not want to eat? I found that I ate when I was home alone out of boredom and loneliness. Occupying yourself can help with the boredom, and as far as loneliness is concerned, call a friend or go online. Heck, come to cc and see how we're all doing! We're all here for you, and we can help each other get through this together. Good luck!
A large part of this is an emotional problem... we binge to fill some sort of inexplicable void within us. I would see a counselor. Binge eating is an eating disorder and it can be very harmful. (I know, because I've had it). A counselor can provide coping strategies and may even refer you to a nutritionist for extra assistance.

ive actually told you this a few times before, but ill say it again

you are binging because when you diet, you dont eat enough. binging is the body's natural response to starvation.

increase those cal, &develop a good relationship with food.

Hi. I have been very shy about this too. But i think i have a binging issue, I lost alot of weight over the summer and now i go on different splurts of low calorie amounts and then out of nowhere i find myself binging about 12 mini snickers, a whole pint of ice cream, 2 100 calorie packs and 2 cookies and sometimes aloooooot more. I seriously want to stop i have tried to consult with my nutritionist and she says i am like to have an an ED. Each day I tell myself to let myself come back to normal amounts of calories like 1500 and when i start i get really upset or start telling myself i am gaining weight but i am not. I don't know what to do, i seem like this hasn't ended at all but has been becoming a regular cycle. Thanks for listening, i appreciate it

why are you trying lose any more? you already look thin. just try to develop a good relationship with food. no low-calorie days.

can you maybe talk to your mom, let her know you are having this problem, and at least for the time being, ask for her not to stock any of these bags of junk food that you would be most likely to binge on. i know it's not a cure-all to remove some of the food, but it may help a bit.  but first and foremost, talking about it, that will help.

i have the same problem with cereal and icecream. once i have one bowl, i just keep eating and eating until i can barely walk or have no more of it left. so i've just stopped eating all dairy products. around christmas i took all the chocolate into my room and hid it and i said "i won't eat it all at once" but then once i had one, i was like "screw it" and ate it all because i didn't want to eat it the next day. if you've been on a diet that isn't getting all food groups, that's probably why you're doing it.

Yeah I know. But I've started eating at least 1500 calories a day. Well, at least I try to. Like in the morning, I eat two slices of toast with a bowl of cereal. Then at school I eat rice and vegetables. But then when I get home, I start eating like mad. Like I'm never going to eat again. And ESPECIALLY when I eat like a 400 calorie breakfast, I start to binge after school and think "oh who cares, I ruined it already".

Maybe you're about to have a growth spurt?

OMG! I did that too! I got a box of chocolates, and I put it in my room saying that I'll just have one everyday. Then I ended up finishing the whole box in two days. I felt so bad. I still do. :(

Haha, I wish. But every since I was a wee little kid, I always loved to hide food and eat it all at once. And I'm still 5'1 :(

Not that I claim to be cured, but I found that this combination helps.

First, I told my Hubby about the binging, so now we talk about how my food was every day. It's just a bit harder to binge knowing I'll have to "confess"

Second, I'm in therapy to work on what feelings I'm stuffing down with the food.

Third, I'm on an anti-depressant. Welbutrin is the best for compulsive bingers. If you are alergic to it like me, Celebrex help allot. I feel less desperation for huge quantities of food, and its easier to work through the emotions this way.

i don't think you're binging because you're restricting too much or on a growth spurt... i think it's just something psychological. sometimes i just freak out and don't know what to do... and must do something. when i do something i'm not supposed to do (like breaking my diet) i feel soem kind of addrenaline rush... it's ironic... to get it from self destruction. but you know that this isn't only ruining your body, but it's ruining emotionally and spiritually...

Maybe you could have someone in your home hold you accountable for your eating habits.  Tell them about your practice of hiding foods and binging later and get them to help you with it.  If you have to be accountable and if you are honest with them, it might work for you.

Get them to help you log foods and find out how many calories you are eating each day.  Make sure you measure rather than guessing at measurements.  Hopefully it will help.

based on one of your later posts (i have a problem with binging too but sometimes can get it together), try not to think of it as an all or nothing. 400 calories for breakfast isnt that much. think about it if you ate 3 400 cal meals and 2 100 cal snacks (or 1 200 cal snack) you still meet a 1500 calorie goal. and new research has shown that eating a big beakfast can help ppl eat less throughout the day, so dont worry about it if you eat a bit extra during the day, you have plenty of time for your body to use that energy before you sleep.

and if you are eating toast+ cereal, rice and veggies during the day you are only getting carbs! you may be binging because your body is missing protien and healthy fats.

i had a similar problem when i started eating vegetarian but you have to make sure you are getting enough protien during a day. i know that calorie count says you just need to eat less than you burn but based on chemistry its not quite that simple.

muscle=proteins, and fat and carbs simply cant just become protein in the body. im not saying eat all protein though. the body needs a bit of all food groups to feel good.

starvation isnt the only trigger for the body to crave food, it can also be nutrient deffiency. so eat balanced, small meals more often and you may be less likely to binge.

oh, and fiber, protein and fat all make you feel fuller longer than simple carbs because they take longer to digest.

sorry for going on for so long, i saw a nutritionalist for this same issue only a few weeks ago so i have a lot to say.
