Does anybody else have strange little rituals/habits when eating food? or about a certain type of food?

For example I cant stand to eat crunchy/crispy foods, such as apples, to me the thought of biting into an apple is horrible, like nails on a chalkboard.

Also with almost all food I break them into small peices, even if they are already small. for example I would break each segment of an orange into about 3 peices.

I also have a thing where I have to cut or tear my sadwiches into at least 4 or more peices before eating

Even ridiculous stuff like smarties I will break into 2 before eating

Its like I have a phobia of whole food!

Anyway relate, or am I jsut mad? >_<

No, I do the same sort of things. I only like to eat with certain forks or spoons and I have to have my sandwiches assembled in a certain way. In my opinoin, most people develope certain "rituals" when they practice a certain way of life and eating healthy is certainly a "way of life". So in answer to your question, no, you are not mad and I can definietly relate! :-) 

i definitely don't have as many as some people, but i have some ritualistic things that i do.

  • -i have to stir my oatmeal a million times..it's really weird, and i also have to stir it in the middle of bites. same with pudding and yogurt, actually.
  • -i tear bagels into at least four pieces. not before i eat it, but as i am eating it.
  • -when i drink coffee i have to stir it with the straw or like make it swirl by moving my wrist (i guess i have issues with stirring? haha)
  • -i never take bites out of anything whole besides apples or strawberries
  • -when i eat pasta, i can only eat one or two noodles or whatever type it is at a time, i can't stuff my mouth full of food.

i probably have more; i just can't think of anything, ha.

My strange eating is a bit different...

The biggest example of my strange eating habits would be with a Twix bar. First, I nibble the chocolate off the ends. Then the sides. Then I scrape the chocolate and caramel off the top. Then I scrape the chocolate off the bottom. Then I scrape the yummy little layer of something that I don't even know what it is off the top of the water. Then I eat the wafer. I swear, it takes me 5 minutes just to eat one bar.

I like to eat sandwiches around the crust first, then the middle. I also swirl my food around the dish a lot. And if there are crumbs on my bread or whatever, I just HAVE to tap them off.

And you think breaking orange segments into 3 pieces is weird? I split them (the segments) in half and nibble on the little "pods" of juice. It takes me 10+ minutes to eat an orange like that.

Also, when eating a banana, I take a bite, then in my mouth I split it into the three segments and eat chew each segment separately.


I didn't realize how weird I was until I really thought about it haha

- My Hamburgers have to be pretty much raw

- I cannot drink from ANYONE else's water bottle

- When I give gum away I have to give away 2 pieces @ a time

- I have to take my 50 vitamins a day

Other than those, I don't think I have any other weird rituals.... although I am sure my family can name BILLIONS! ha ha

For Sandwiches/Bread:
-Eat Crusts first
-Squish down (unless it's toast)
-Eat

For Poptarts:
-Eat crusts
-Split in half (like an oreo)
-Eat the bottom side
-Eat the frosted side

 

I always save the best part for last. =/

{Ladyfirelyght} I used to do the Twix thing too! Same with KitKats, Peanut Butter Cups

Also:

  • I used to separate Smarties, M&Ms and Reeses Pieces into their colour groups and eat them in rainbow order
  • Sandwiches, I squish down then nibble around the crust, and continue in a spiral to the middle
  • I cut my dinner up into bit size pieces and give it a good mix before eating
  • I only like grated cheese
  • I mash up a mouthful of banana with my tongue before chewing
  • I have an irrational unacceptance of artificial sweetener... flavourings, colourings (though best avoided) I'm fine with, but sweetener! I can't even explain why to anyone...
  • I've been called weird for not liking chocolate... I'm not supposed to eat it (I react badly to it) but I used to love it, now I can't stand the taste, but I love cocoa!
  • My daughter thinks I'm weird because I think a shop bought smoothie (made fresh in front of you) is a treat

when i get a veggie sub from subway (tomatoes, cucumber, green pepper and lettuce) i tear it apart. first i eat the green pepper, then the cucumber, then the tomato, then lettuce and then i just eat the bread. :|

  • I pretty much eat salsa with everything, egg whites, salsa on bread, salsa on my lettuce and vegetables!
  • Whenever i eat my all bran flakes i have to put just enough milk to cover the cereal then i leave it to go mushy
  • I have to eat things in a certain order, and never mix them! I also save the best for last.
  • I have to weigh everything before i eat it and im obsessed with serving sizes!
Theres so many more yikes.

I will throw away a meal if any two food items touch.  YUK.

I eat all of each item before I move to the next, and I turn my plate so that only that food is directly in front of me.

Woe be to you if you use "my" fork.  It must be washed right after I use it in case I need it again. 

I have a lot more, but I already sound weird enough!

I have some of the same quirks that others have mentioned. 

  • I eat sandwiches crust first, then eat in a spiral to the middle
  • I always save the best for last
  • I separate candies by color and eat them in order by most to least... such as if I have 6 reds, 5 blues, and 2 yellows, I will eat the reds, then the blues, until there is an equal number of all colors.  Then I will alternate eating the colors one at a time (keeping the number of each as close to the same as possible) until they are all gone. However, if the different colors indicate different flavors, I will eat them until I have an even number of each, and then eat the rest in order by flavor preference
  • French fries and pototo chips get eaten by the least desirable first (smallest and crispiest; overly brown or broken chips and fries with pointy ends) all the way up to the most desirable - large, unbroken, golden chips, and perfect, plump fries with blunted ends (from the middle of the potato) 
  • I used to eat pizza like this:  pick off all the toppings one by one and eat them.  Then eat the crust.  Then eat the rest, backwards, working my way toward the tip, which is, of course, the best piece. 
  • Everything has to be even... when I have a meal I go around my plate and try to eat a little bit of everything - I hate to run out of one food before another.  Ideally, my last bite should be a combination of everything on my plate.  I don't like to mix beforehand, though.  My husband is the exact opposite.  He eats all of one food first, then moves on to the next.  That drives me insane.  He also think I am crazy for eating like I do.
  • There's a difference between a 'quick' and a 'compulsion'. If it's just something you do from habit and prefer, that's fine... but if it's something that you HAVE to do (ie. you'd freak out if somebody told you not to cut your sandwich into exactly 12 pieces, or your peas touched your potatoes) then you have to ask yourself whether it's affecting your life... if you give me a little pile of m&ms or candy (or quarters or anything else small and 'arrangable', I'll probably put them down in front of me and arrange them in a symmetrical pattern before I start to eat them, then I'll rearrange as I use them up - but my life doesn't come to an end if I can't do that.

    no, you're not 'nuts' but it sounds like you've got the 'c' part of ocd.

    i eat everything around...pizza, sandwiches, cookies, tacos, you name it if it can be eaten around the endges first i do it, i get the most made fun of for subs i make a big mess but i cant just eat it straight through.

    the one that always catches peoples eye though is i dip popcorn in water, each peice just half way....but i dont drink the water after...i dont even know how that one got started

    For cereal I use the tiniest bit of milk and then let it go mushy.

    I eat things one and a time. It's not in a particular order though.

    With gum...I bite off tiny bits of it at a time.

    Hmmm. There's still probably a bunch more strange things...

    I just can't seem to remember them though. Laughing

    hmm..lets see..ive got a few

    eat just the outside of bread..if it has whole oats on the outside, i ill pick them off, then break off really small pieces of the crust, then dip in the oats..

    eat my salad with a knife and fork, tabasco, salsa, jalapenos and dijon mustard

    take a bite of something like a cookie or cracker and throw the rest away

    dip my spoon into soup and just lick whats on the spoon rather than taking a whole spoonful

    breaking chips or crackers into very small pieces and eating one piece at a time

    taking a whole day to drink one latte

    i have a million more..but these are just some of the whacky things i do!

    I do alot of these things fuzzy's one about the sweets in colours and eating the crust of a sandwich or pizza first, Cereal is not cereal if its not soggy. corn flakes especially. My crisp packets cannot be opened upside down (the writing upside down) I never bite into anything a sausage roll for example needs to be torn into pieces, unless im starving or its a tortilla roll.

    and my cigarettes when you take off the plastic wrap on the front the base of the plastic wrap needs to be on the packet

     weird, i do this with kitkats, it takes me like half an hour t eat a kitkat

     

    i also eat picles weird, if its a whole pickle i will bite off one end and eat it, then chew on the pickle, without breaking the pickle skin, to soften the center part that holds the seeds. then i suck out the seeds, then i will take a bite and eat the meaty part. this gets repeated over and over again until the pickle runs out of center. and with pickle spears i will suck out the seeds and then eat the part that holds the seeds, then the meaty part last.

     

    when it comes to french fries i prefer the little ones so i eat them first. and the crunchy ones. they are the best.

    i like to cut things in half, sandwitches, burgers, tacos, steaks, i just prefer big  things being in half before is start working with them or eating them.

    1. I order my subway sandwich and I eat every peice seperatley (lettuce, cheese, meat, bread in that order)
    2. I only like salsa on my salad
    3. I have to know everything that's in my food
    4. I only eat packaged foods in my school cafeteria
    5. I put exactly 11 sprays of spray butter on my sweet potato
    6. I eat the crust first
    7. I save the most decadent peice of food for last
    8. I plan everything I am going to eat the night in advanced
    9. I must know exactly what I am ordering before going into a restranut
    10. I eat all of my snacks alone
    11. If anyone touches something I portion for myself I snap

    That's about it! I'm a freak...

    I knew a guy that would eat a bag of Doritos by biting in to each individual chip at least 3 times. He would also thoroughly chew each bite he took. Took him like a half hour to finish a bag. Drove me nuts!

    Ditto saving the best part for last!

    I hate hate HATE mushy cereal!  I pour the milk and then I have to eat it right away.  I hate cereals like corn flakes and Life with milk because they get soggy too fast!

    I have to bite off the top of Hershey's kisses first.

    Oatmeal must be eaten in a spiral pattern.

    I will eat apples or pears out of hand, but I prefer to slice them into really thin pieces and then eat them.  Idk, it's fun. 

    I like to eat the crust of the bread, and then the soft delicious inside.  Again, save the best for last.

    I eat small things one at a time.  Raisins, M&Ms, etc.  Sometimes I bite the M&Ms in half to make them last longer.

    I scrap salt off of french fries before eating them if they are too salty.

    I have to eat ALL of the normal pizza part of a slice of pizza before starting on the crust.  Like I get as close to the crust as I can without biting it, and then once all the other stuff is gone I will eat it.

    I have to cut all my meat in half. especially burgers. I can't stand the thought that i may get to an uncooked center. Other than that, i can't really think of any little quirks.
