Eating after surgery is more than challenging...HELP

Quote  |  Reply
I recently had the gastric lap-band done and lost 50plus pounds in about 2 months..which you would think is phenominal but what it caused was not sooo great. Dramatic weight loss can be a trigger for an acute gallbladder attack, and it most certainly did for me. I just spent the last 6 weeks recouping from surgery to take out the gallbladder and the surgeon also removed the band. So now back to square one attempting to eat like a normal person but with a few issues....1) I am gluton intollerant so nothing made of flour which cuts out most carbs and 2) after losing my gallbladder I cant process anything containing fat(lipids), dairy, complex protein(red meat), beans and some vegitables.(Keep in mind that I am also trying to return to "normal" eating after the gastric band.) So what is a girl supposed to do??? I eat very carefully but am only getting up to around 1,100 calories consumed in 5-6 small meals and it is recommended that i consume 1680. Any ideas how to increase this number without making me explode from all the extra food??

RE: The Dr. is aware of my food dilemas and said that surgery effects people differently. Those who have a combination of digestive issues are prone to "Dumping syndrome" which can cause malnutrition and defeat all dieting.

What does your doctor suggest?

Has your doctor told you you must restrict foods because of your gall bladder surgery? I had my gall bladder out several years ago, and have no restrictions at all.
I realize my answer is not very helpful.... sorry about that!!
My mother had her gallbladder out and she didn't have food restrictions either.
After gallbladder removal, it is said that the liver takes over the functions of the gallblader. Sooo, there really shouldn't be any dietary restrictions based on the surgery, I don't think. Try to work your way up to the recommended amount of calories using healthy fruits and vegetables plus lean protein and nuts, and you'll be on your way. :)
Do you think a dietician could help you?  Your insurance would most likely pay for it if the doctor wrote an order.
I had my gall bladder removed just over a year ago and had no dietary restrictions after recovery.  It was recommended I watch my fat intake, but I think that's true for everyone.  You shouldn't have any trouble with fats simply due to the gall bladder removal, unless there is some other reason?
I just had my gallbladder out last Monday and am almost back to normal.  My doctor told me not to eat anything very high in fat for at least 2 weeks and then when I do eat something fattening to start off slow.  Some people will have problems and some people wont so he said to start slow and see how my body reacts.

Last night we had to go to my sons swim meet and didn't have time to fix a healthy meal so we just grabbed something after the meet.  We ended up just eating fast food ( which I have not done in 2 months since starting my diet)  I tried to choose the least fat item on the menu but still had more fat in that 1 meal then I have had in a whole day.

All night long I just felt sick to my stomach.  I dont know if it was because of the high fat  and the gallbladder thing or if was just because I have really been eating healthy for 2 months and and my body was not used to eating that way.

Either way- no more chinese food for me!
i had mine out and have food restrictions, but i had complicatons.  either way, if i eat too much dairy or cheese, i light up the room, not in a good way.  My doctor reccomended nuts, but i am allergic, but you could probably eat nuts and fruits.... im happy you decided to get rid of the band and do this the right way.
What about peanut butter, can you digest it okay?  Adds calories quickly.
You probably know this,  but there are plenty of grains out there besides wheat.  I know that my Meijer has a section devoted to natural and alternative grain foods.  Spelt is one that I know is common.  I also know many people who cook their own, which only works if you have time obviously.

my mom had her gallbladder out, and it didn't really affect her digestion/diet.
