Eating tuna daily - safe?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm looking for an affordable way to get a little closer to my daily protein requirement of 1g per pound of body weight. A can of tuna contains approx. 30g protein and at a reasonable cost. Would one can of tuna per day be considered a healthy addition to my diet? Would this fall within acceptable mercury consumption levels? Thanks!

For a while i was eating canned tuna most days of the week. I got bored so I switched to grilled chicken. I guess cutting back on tuna would be good right now. But i will probably go back to eating it maybe 2-3 times a week. I like my tuna and brown rice for lunch.

I have been eating a small 85gram can of tuna almost every day for months. Now you guys have put me off. I didn't realise that it was toxic. Frown

wow i eat a whole can of tuna every day Foot in mouth

because its cheap, filling in my salads, and quick!!!

oh no..... should i REALLY stop?

i also rinse my tuna....if that does anything?

rinsing doent help mercury accumulates in the tissue..... i actually know someone who was hospitilized for mercury poisoning from tuna...but they were eating it everyday...

If you're going to eat tuna eat the chunk light variety since its a younger, smaller tuna fish and possibly has less mercury. And it all really depends on the weight of the person too, if you weigh more you can consume more. From what I gather from my nutrition class, a person who is around 150 (I have no idea how much you weigh though) can safely eat around 1 can every 3 days.

Does any of your food contain High Fructose Corn Syrup? It contains mercury.

Have old metal fillings? Yep, mercury there too.

The list just starts there. Why add more poison to your food?

Here are some of the neurological symptoms of mercury poisoning:

  • irritability
  • anxiety/nervousness, often with difficulty in breathing
  • restlessness
  • exaggerated response to stimulation
  • fearfulness
  • emotional instability: -lack of self control; -fits of anger, with violent, irrational behavior
  • loss of self confidence
  • indecision
  • shyness or timidity, being easily embarrassed
  • loss of memory
  • inability to concentrate
  • lethargy/drowsiness
  • insomnia
  • mental depression, despondency
  • withdrawal
  • suicidal tendencies
  • manic depression
  • That's just the start. If you eat a lot of tuna, you really should google the effects and symptoms of mercury poisoning.

    hi, I love you!

Surprised I have a lot of those symptoms and I eat about 1-2 cans of tuna a week. I have no idea if those symptoms come from murcury or my ED though... what should I do?

    Go to a doctor.

the symptoms listed are incredible generic and are by no means unique to mercury poisoning.  they could just as easily be classified as symptoms of depression.  if you've experienced a recent change in your functioning, it's a good idea to see the doctor...not necessarily because you have mercury poisoning, but because any significant changes are worthy of consultation.  mercury poisoning is rare.  tuna is a very common food.  if eating a can of tuna a week caused mercury poisoning, a huge proportion of people would suffer from this.  so, in short, i would not say you should be concerned about your tuna consumption but if the symptoms you're experiencing are causing interference in your life, you should get them checked out.
