Is Eating Veggies ALL DAY "Binging"?
Hi folks... I'm really new to this "diet thing". I've never tried to lose weight before. There is TON'S of information here and I am slowly processing it. Learning new things every day. Apparently one of the bad things I've been doing is limiting my caloric intake a bit too severely. I think I'm getting on track with that... I'm almost up to where this site reccomends. Whatever I have been doing has been working. I started out a month ago and have lost 27 pounds so far... about 50 more to go. Now here's my question. One of the things that keeps me going is that I stuff myself during the day with raw veggies. I mean STUFF. I usually eat 1 green pepper, 1 yellow pepper, 1 red pepper, 35 baby carrots and about 4 or 5 stalks of celery per day. I start in the morning, right after breakfast, and graze all day till dinner time. Is this bad? Is this "binging"? (I never even heard of that word till I came here). Any response is appreciated! It's been a pleasure "discovering" you all :)

I do the same thing with veggies. Short of being too full before a workout, I haven't seen any negative side-effects. Now, if you really do go overboard you can stretch your stomach, but you'd really have to work at that... and I wouldn't recommend it. I've tried to do it for the sake of taking in more calories.
As far as the good benefits, well, they're there. It keeps your metabolism from spiking, yet it keeps burning at an effecient pace if you eat often. You also get all of those vitamins and fiber from the veggies.
I'm sure that someone can give you better advise, but that's my $0.02. =]

this is one of my favorite things i've read about eating veggies while dieting:
"who ever heard of someone getting fat by eating their vegetables?"
i don't know where i read it, but i love it. most will tell you that if you're hungry--snack on veggies. they're healthy, low fat/no fat, low cal, and high in nutrients. that is definitely NOT what i would consider binging. it's good to snack to keep up your metabolism. as long as you're getting your other nutrients (proteins and fats), dont' worry about over-indulging on fresh vegetables. now, if you eat them with dips--then be careful.
the binging that you'll discover here are when ppl eat a ton of fatty foods or high cal foods that put them way over their intake level. so as long as you stay within your calorie intake levels, you should be fine.

I don't see a problem with its. Its a good amount of veggies, but spread over the day. Binging is more like stuffing your face with 4 whole water melons in a single sitting.
Eating alot of veggies isn't bad. As long as you are getting the other nutrients in your diet as well.

i drink a can of v8 and thats my veggies for the day =/
if you look at humans waaaay back in the day, our diets were based on veggies. becuase that's what we could get our hands on. veggies veggies veggies and the occasional meat when there was a hunt. lots of plants. and grains. i wouldn't worry about it. it's okay to feel full.
eating 1 green pepper, 1 yellow pepper, 1 red pepper, 35 baby carrots, and 4 or 5 stalks of celery per day doesn't sound like stuffing yourself. in fact, it's a good thing that you're eating so many veggies. i say "Keep it UP!!!" i don't consider it binging but juts don't eat so much that u feel like ur going to burst. and wow! 27lbs in a month? looks like ur doing good. good luck reaching any other goals u have. and trust me, ur definetly not binging.
I agree with skinnyglamour. You aren't getting too much. Sounds less then I have for lunch some days -))
My opinion is, medically, its fine, as long as your having water too (to balance out the fibre)
Just make sure you're not mindlessly eating - as it can lead to eating problems later (with binging and minerals/vitamins) - you'd be better off eating a small handful of nuts than a whole head of lettuce, for the same cals.
So if its within your cals and you're eating when you're hungry, I see nothing wrong at all. If you're just throwing cucumber in becuase you can, then I dont recommend it. You'd be better of having some protein and good fats, from tuna or something

I think I'm eating it so that I am so stuffed, that when I go home for dinner I'll only take one piece of lasagna as opposed to three. And that really is alot of food... over 2 lbs or so. It's the constant eating I was kind of worried about. 1 big meal that lasted 12 hours.
I find I go through phases of eating tons of veggies to eating minimal veggies. It really does work when it comes to keeping you full along with keeping the system regular.
That's definitely not bingeing.
Here's bingeing (a real one of mine, a couple of months ago..I didn't keep it in, but it was still a binge):
-two packets easy mac & cheese
-one pack lipton teriyaki noodle sides
-one banana
-eighteen hershey 60-cal chocolate sticks (three boxes)
-cottage cheese with jam
-a whole jar of peanut butter
-a lot of whole wheat bread
-two cups of pudding with f-f whipped cream
-one cup of soymilk
-five-gazillion bowls of cereal
-three ounces of cheese
-three white chocolate bars
-one pint premium ice cream
Uh, so yeah.
Definitely not bingeing..bingeing means feeling out of control while you eat, usually absurd amounts of food.
That's also really not a lot of veggies. It's a normal, healthy amount. It doesn't sound like you are stuffing yourself at all.

I'm really confused. You've lost 27 lbs in a month? Isn't that extremely unhealthy? I thought 1-2 lbs a week was what I should be aiming for. Of course, I know nothing about it, but I've lost exactly 4 lbs in the month I've been on here and I thought I was on track. I dunno, am I wrong? Should I have lost 7 lbs a week? Is it actually a lb a day or something? It just seems so drastic!!
Know what's a really good snack? (if you like it, that is)
Celery dipped in horseradish, or a mustard/horseradish mix.. practically no cals, but delicious, and an energy boost, I find.

jamieleigh - When I first started this diet I weighed 236 lbs. I was working under the theory that if I take in less calories than I burn, I would have to lose weight. I ate between 300 to 500 calories per day and lost 20 lbs the first 2 weeks.
I then started reading on the web about diets and foods and metabolisms and nutrients and carbs and proteins and fats and exercize and ... just too much to information to process except a little bit at a time. I found that starving my body was bad because it started eating muscles as opposed to my fat. I actually started keeping track of my calories about this time (on another similar web site) and I decided that 1200 to 1500 calories would be safe for me. I lost 2 pounds during this 3rd week.
Then I came here and found a better food log system and these wonderful forums where people answer any question I have and where you can just feel support dripping off the pages. I now try to eat as close as the 1600 calories that was reccomended here, and I now weigh 209 lbs. Dropped 5 this week.
The first area I am concentrating on next will be trying to get balanced. I am WAY high in carbs (from eating 2 lbs of veggies a day) and way low in protein. Once I figure that out maybe I'll start playing with metabolism ;)
Bottom line is that the way I was losing weight, it WAS unhealthy... but I'm getting better.

Oh ok, makes sense. I think I misread your post or something. :)
That sounds fine, as long as you're balancing it. I weigh only about 110, and I eat 8 1 cup uncooked (or 1/2 cup cooked) servings of veggies a day. I also feel like I am eating all freaking day, but how else am I going to fit that much food in.
On the plus side, I am almost NEVER hungry.
haha definitely not bad for you! =D
