eating before working out

Quote  |  Reply

How long before you work out should you eat?  If its too long before, I feel like I'm going to pass out and I have to leave, cutting the workout short.  If i eat right before its just so much harder.  Like, I'm WAY out of breath!

Anyway, I was just wondering what everyone else does.  What is your good eating medium before a workout.

I usually time it so that i leave half an hour after i eat. Any sooner, and i feel sick and have nearly thrown up (luckily i jog outside so it wouldnt have been a big deal). It doesnt bother me to go later than half an hour though. Perhaps you should eat filling things before hand. Like a good amount of whole grains and protein with a bit of healthy fat.

Maybe try a two slices of whole-grain toast with peanut butter and a hard boiled egg?

45 mins before workout I recommend a portion sized protein and whole grain.  Nothing too filling.  IE: This morning. 5 30 AM I had one veggie burger [morning star] - tasty and much better for you than sausage!! with a glass of orange juice and one slice of 100 percent whole wheat bread and about 1/2 cup of blueberries.  I taught a group step class at 630 AM and then taught a group power class at 745 AM.  At 9 AM I had a glass of skim milk with a heaping scoop of vanilla flavored whey powder [protein] mixed in it and a handful of [about 6]  whole almonds for a recovery snack!

ohhh i used to struggle with this...what time of day do you workout/what kind of workout do you do???

I would recommend what fitness girl said...45 minutes.  i do a lot of high intensity cardio/really long running so i fill up on complex carbs that don't break down easily like fruits....my number 1 recommendation is a banana (i usually have one in the middle of a marathon and they give me enough energy!).  i think you are supposed to have a 3:1 ratio of carbs to protein.....so try fruit and yogurt....it's slowly broken down so you won't feel light headed while your working out....or whole wheat toast and almonds etc.

if you workout in the AM.....(which i do)....it can be really tough to find the right breakfast that gives you energy but doesn't make you feel sick....i usually stick to yogurt/milk/blueberries/stonemilled oatmeal/frozen mango/banana/toast/eggwhites etc.  try not to eat foods that are really high in fibre b/c that doesn't go over too well with your stomach

in the pm i would say whatever you are comfortable with....45 minutes before....it's not as big of a deal b/c  you've been eating all day.

I usually wake up in the morning and have something small, like two slices of toast with peanutbutter and banana or a bowl of granola or cereal, then wait twenty minutes or so, then work out. Then after my workout (working out makes me so hungry!) I have a larger meal with plenty of protein in it (egg salad sandwich) so I'll feel full longer, and plenty to drink, like water or unsweetened iced tea.

for me i eat 6 mini meals a day so I usually try to sandwich my workout between two of them.

A great pre workout meal I have found is a slice of whole wheat toast with non fat cottage cheese mixed with pb2 on top

I do greek yogurt, fruit and cereal a lot too

great suggestions!  thank you so much.  that wheat toast with some peanut butter sounds great right now...

I do fine a few hours after I have eaten.  I usually don't have an afternoon snack (although I do usually have a morning and evening snack) and it doesn't seem to affect me too much as long as I am hydrated.

I do make sure to get a protein shake after my workout and then I eat dinner after my shower.

Edit:  I do my workouts when I get home from work.
