I was just recently discharged from alexian brothers mental behavior hospitals ED unit and i dont know how many calories im taking in because they dont work with numbers they use the exchange rate(something to do with trying to get their anorexia patients to stop counting and not worry about calories anymore). But since my discharge i cant seem to stop binging at night does anybody on here think ive turned my anorexia into a binge eating disorder somehow or should i just try going about gaining a different way rather than the way i was doing it while i was in rehab so i can stop this unhealthy habit.

Hi I have been inpatient a few times and am currently on an exchange meal plan outpatient. The exchange meal plan adds up to your calorie needs but gets you to be less rigid. Did they set you up with an outpatient team? If not can you cause the transition can be ruff and support can help. It is common that one will binge in recovery. Your mind and body is starved and it takes awhile for it to be nurished even if you are feeding it now does not reverse the time you did not. It can be scary I do know but the more consistent you are with health it will settle down. A few key things though is you have to follow the meal plan. Are you? Can your pre plan your meals and snacks so that it meets your needs? If you restrict you will want to binge. If you have met the plan but it is not enough maybe you need more calories. Hopefully they taught you some ways to cope in a healthy way when you want to use your ed so you need to try to apply them. I hope things get easier soon

Are you binging at night, because you're not eating enough during the day?  Also, part of recovery is learning how to reconsider what "binging" is, esp if its fulfilling your meal plan.  One thing I recommend and works for me is following my meal plan better during the day ot prevent binging at night.  If you really plan out your meals with an outpatient program, it could really help you.

It's really common for an anorexic in recovery to start bingeing. You've starved yourself for a long time and your survival mechanisms start to kick in ie: caveman goes 3 days without eating, finds a wooly mammoth, and eats the whole thing, ya know? Its why we're not extinct.

Make sure that you're eating enough during the day - a nutritionist would be helpful with this - and you might find that the bingeing diminishes a lot.

Hey!  I was at Alexian in Chicago way back in March of 2005.

Have you considered going into an intensive outpatient program?  If you do live in the 'burbs around Chicago, I'd recommend coming to Insight.  There's a program downtown and in Skokie, and it meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights 5:30-9:30pm and Saturday mornings 8:00am till noon.
