Edamame??
Has anyone had any luck finding this veggie in commercial grocery stores in Canada? (Sobeys? SuperStore? Etc...)
If not, any idea where i could find it?
did you look in the frozen food/veggie department? Often also placed with frozen vegetarian products.
Sorry, not in Canada, so this really is just $.02
Can someone give me an idea how to pronounce it so I don't look like a dummy when I ask the clerk where it is?
LOL
I say it "Ed-uh-ma-may". Yummy!
Do you have a Costco membership? I saw some in the Costco here in Moncton just last week. It's in the frozen foods section, near the frozen berries and veggies. It's a HUGE bag, being from costco and all. But if you have the freezer space for it, go to town! And if you haven't tried it before, I have to say, I experimented with their edamame salad first, and it was delish. They have that near the bean salad and the ready-made pizza, chicken, etc.
I just figured I would help out, being from the same neck of the woods!
Aha! I found it! :)
Now - what the hell can I make with it? People rave about it, however I made a dip to go with pita chips and veggies tonight (Edamame, balsamic, water, garlic, parsley, olive oil) and it was horrendous. Maybe I just don't like the taste???
I get the ones still in the shell. I nuke em for 30 seconds, then enjoy. Just like at a Japanese restaurant. Yummy!
I'm sure you can put the shelled ones in any salad, stir fry, same as you would with any green veggie.
Efish, is it really Ed-uh-ma-may? I always said "ed-uh-maym"
Yep, I speak Japanese. Eh-dah-mah-may (but the above 'ed-uh-ma-may' is about the same).
They are good boiled or steamed for a few minutes with a bit of salt. Just eat the beans - not the pods. You can also add them to salads or stirfry for a bit of protein.

Haha "Where can I find edamame? I looked everywhere and couldn't find it! I wonder... do they ship from the states?.. Oh I found it!!! ........... Now what the hell do I do with it??"

Um - wondering if I should be offended by this post or not?
My reason for asking where to find it (and it looked like a pea to me) is because I've seen it mentioned numerous times, and in many of the magazines I read. I tried a few recipes and didn't enjoy the taste. So, quite innocently asked if anyone had a good suggestion.
perhaps I'm being too sensitive.
"perhaps I'm being too sensitive." maybe, but also, I keep forgetting that online, things come across differently from the way they would in real life...
Sorry!!! *blushes*
Of course I was being too sensitive. I was upset last night because my darling husband (and today I love him for this) told me he wouldn't go for ice cream.... he is one of those people with a natural distaste for junk food and never wants to go. I insist I can't have any if he doesn't! Anyway.... was a bit lighter this morning so I'm thanking him now!
actually the correct way is "ed-dah-mah-may"
I eat a couple bags of edimame a week now. I have only prepared it one way, and it is amazing.
I boil the frozen pods per the directions on the back (6 minutes). I put a little bit of wasabi in a cup with low sodium soy sauce and mix up the wasabi into the sauce thoroughly.
I dip the soy pods into the sauce and then I shell the beans into my mouth and discard the rest.
You can skip the wasabi if you dont like spice, but thats just crazy..
*edit* I got curious about how other people cook theirs and went to youtube and found this recipe, alot more involved then what I normally do but it looks amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ub45H07xX7I
I actually like to eat the raw shelled beans, which is strange because I don't eat any other bean or pea raw. Another great way is to steam or boil them in the shell and drop some large grain salt on them after removing from the stove. Cover them up for a while to let the saltiness incorporate a little. Then you can shell them into your mouth or onto a salad. They are great tossed up with some udon noodles or rice and other veggies, stir fry style. If you like quiche/tortillas, they are great to incorporate. I've actually put them into sushi rolls with cucumber spears, egg and ume (pickled plum) sauce. They kind of pop out of the roll when you eat it! I could see maybe adding them to a salsa fresca, but dip does sound pretty bad.
