*edit*. the bible.....ugh.
Let me start out by saying, I have no problem with anyone being religious, believing in god, or anything like that. I don't know how I feel about evolution, I really have my own personal beliefs. It's fine with me, but I could not believe any of it for all the money in the world.
Alright, today at work ( I work at a grocery store where ALOT of old people shop) an older lady came up to me and asked if I prayed today.
"um no?"
Then asked if I believe in god.
"nope"
Then acted completely shocked out of her mind. Like she has never seen anyone ever that doesn't believe in god.
She then told me to wait while she goes to her car to give me her bible to read.
I said, "No thanks, I dont read that, I never will ever again"
She goes on. and on and on. About what will happen to me if I dont find god.
I tried politely multiple times to leave the conversation but she kept following me around!
Finally I said " I apologize, but this is none of your business, I do not want your bible, I don't want ANYTHING to do with it and I think that God is absolutely ridiculous, Please leave me alone"
THEN she went and talked to my supervisor about it.
I know I was at work, and I was not rude to her at all, but seriously I don't want people talking to me about religion! It's totally inconsiderite.
Agreed?
Disagreed?
I scan titles as a way to know which threads to avoid...this one seems a little offensive to the Christians on the site...just sayin'...

Regarding evolution--if we all are descendants of Adam and Eve,as many believe, why don't we all have identical DNA????
Even if we were all descendants of Adam and Eve, why should we expect that we would have identical DNA?

God is good unfortunately, he has bad P.R. people.

OP: can you change the thread title so its a little less offensive?

Maybe change it to something more accurate - something like "rude bible lady...ugh", , since it wasn't the bible itself that was so annoying.
What she did is why Christianity has a bad name. Not all Christians are like that.
Her following you after you told her you were not interested in the conversation was rude and inappropriate. I was unclear on if the talking to the supervisor was about how you weren't interested in what she had to say (rude and inappropriate) or about your supervisor's personal beliefs (the woman's perrogative).
As a Christian, I share what I believe with the people around me. I do not however force them to believe the same thing, or press the issue when someone has expressed that they do not believe the same way I do. I'm sorry that you had an experience with someone who was being so rude in the name of Christianity, but please know that it is not the way all of us operate.

We aren't all descendents of Adam and Eve, according to the Bible.
Genesis 1:26 - The [Elohim] said, "Let us make humanity in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild beasts and all the reptiles that crawl upon the earth."
Elohim is a plural word; so we can say that this is not one god, but many... a pantheon, perhaps.
So, here's the original creation of the human species: male and female. This is before the Garden of Eden, and Yahweh is not mentioned as the creator of these people. The next chapter talks about how Yahweh, an individual member of the pantheon, makes his own Garden in Eden, and his own man to live in it:
Gen 2:7 - Yahweh God fashioned a man of dust from the soil. Then he breathed into his nostrils a breath of life, and thus the man became a living being.
8 Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden which is in the east, and there he put the man he had fashioned.
The people created by the Elohim were probably the same people Cain went to live with after he slew his brother, Abel, and probably the source of the woman Seth married.
[edit: a paragraph was removed for lack of accuracy]
Just my thoughts, anyway.
No. That doesn't parse with the Old Testatement.
Because Abraham is considered the first Jew, not Adam, Eve, Noah, et. al.
Abraham gave birth to Isaac who gave birth to Jacob (whose children became the 12 tribes of Judaism) and Esau (who, I've heard, is considered the forebearer of the founders of Islam)

I wasn't speaking in terms of what is written in the Bible, but in terms of genetics. The original question is that if everyone descended from one pair of people, why isn't their DNA identical? It doens't matter what pair of people they're referring to, or if anyone actually descended from one particular couple.
Hypothetically, IF everyone descended from one couple, there's still not a reason to think that they should have identical DNA. (I believe someone made the point of people not have identical DNA to their siblings.)
However, your explanation of the creation of humans per Genesis is an interesting one. I can't say I've seen any evangelical Christian that would agree with it, as they do claim that all humans are descended from Adam and Eve. I'll have to see if they have a response to the "Elohim" vs. "Yahweh" thing.
How about indulging an old lady! Believe in God or not, its your deal. Perhaps if you would of said yes she would left you alone...
Pick your battles...To the Old and Zelaous give kindness. Its better than getting baggered with the Bible. Just a thought!
Yes, I was only addressing the first part of the statement.
But it explains (not at all scientifically!) the difference in DNA, to a certain extent; different humans created by different creators.
Not that this adds much to the conversation, but I find some references to Mitochondrial Eve interesting.
One way of looking at creation and evolution is to realize that what separates man from animal is our ability to reason and the existence of a "Soul" , so it could stand to reason that the first "man" that was made in Gods image, could have been the first human to recieve a soul, as opposed to just being the first homo-erectus to walk the earth.
DNA is constantly mutating, if all our DNA was identical, we would all be exact carbon copies of our parents, *shudders*, that would be creepy!
Vive La Difference!! hooray for Genetic Mutations!
I'm not sure that I agree that animals don't have Souls.
How can we tell really tell that, really.. one way or the other?

As well, I believe it comes from a good place as they feel they have something they want to enrich and enlighten you with. This can be easy to forget when someone is giving you a heavy religious sales pitch though. Yes it can be intrusive but its rarely malicious.
You took the words right out of my mouth.
national geographic had a great special on the "genetic Adam", turns out we all ARE able to be traced to a single man.
However, before anyone comes to the wrong conclusion... the Mitochondrial Eve existed at a different time than the Genetic Adam. They weren't together; one died long, long, long before the other.

I'd have to agree with you on that one. Some of the studies I engaged in for a number of years spoke of Nephesch, the Animal Soul. Animals have it, and so do we... according to that particular system, which is Judaic in origin.
Studies aside, I have always felt that they do have souls. But that's just a matter of opinion on my part.
