I imagine he let her know the risks and probably tried to convince her that it might not be the best idea ever but in the end it's the patient's choice, not his.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't doctors have the right to refuse to perform medically unnecessary procedures based on their assessment of the fitness of the patient?  Geez - a pharmacist has the right to refuse to fill Morning After pill prescriptions, but a doctor is obligated to perform IVF?

A person has a right to healthcare - I don't think it should extend to self deluded maternal vanity.

She kept looking around until she found one that would. The clinic that implanted the first set refused her request for more.

Did anyone else notice the obvious plastic surgery she has had?!  Those lips are not natural.  And, I think that she's trying to make herself look like Angelina Jolie, because she now bears a slight resemblance to her IMO.

This wouldn't be an issue for me except for the fact that she is accepting food stamps.  I am so sick of this kind of thing.

You could get into the semantics on what is and what isn't medically necessary- so where should the line be drawn?  But I'm not looking to start an argument.

He could have refused- and she'd eventually find a doctor who wouldn't.  Obviously the procedure wasn't life threatening.

Totally!  I forgot to mention that.  Wonder who funded all of those procedures.

I'm curious as to where she got the money to pay for fertilization treatments and the implants in order to have the most recent 8 (and the first 6 for that matter) if she doesn't have any income?

From my understanding, those kinds of procedures cost thousands of dollars, do they not?

I think it's just irresponsible and I wish the media would stop covering it. I get the impression she's just a delusional, attention-seeking maniac.

If you look it up at all, I think she funded them through the HUGE Workers' Comp settlement she won because while she was working at a mental hospital there was a RIOT.

News are saying that DHS or child protective services might step in on various reasons .. that she's not capable of supporting these kids, mental issues, etc.

I really don't think she'll get a tv show.  I really don't think anyone will want to tune in to watch her with these kids.  I also think the channels are smart enough to know that we'll view them negatively as well.

She's applying for the medical assistance from california.  if i was the one who gave her workman's comp, i'd reevalulate the case.  She wasn't apparantly in too much pain to have kids ( sitting, carrying kids, etc.) even though her workman's case was based on the fact that she couldn't hold a job where she would have to sit for long times, carry stuff, etc.  But wait .. grandma's taking care of the kids !! And even she has not recommended additional kids but her daughter didn't listen.

the whole situation disgusts me. i think the woman obviously has serious mental issues and is nothing but a selfish piece of crap for doing this to her poor parents.

also, it blows my mind that she would spend huge amounts of money on fertility treatments, but then accept public assistance. how is that even allowed to happen?!

Um...procedures that are actually medically necessary in order to protect or preserve health?  Now, I'm aware that in certain cases, pregnancy can have some health benefits, but the difference between IVF and, for example, an appendectomy is not semantics.

on edit:  One certainly has the right to pursue IVF, but it's not "healthcare" anymore than elective plastic surgery (that's why you'd have very little success in convincing any insurance company to pay for it).

My thoughts exactly.

Just thinking about it makes my brain want to explode.

Well...they have been saying the birth rate in america (and other countries) is going down.... so....i guess having a ton of kids and having everyone else support them is good?......

Poor kids though, i dont care what the mother does....but to bring new people into the world in a sittuation like that.....is a really horrible thing to do. They are going to be soooooooooooooo messed up.

well, I dunno...I think I should go out & be implanted with 10 embroyos and then I can be the first woman to give birth to decuples.  (yep, that's the word for 10 times as much in size, strength, number, amount, or...babies).  Then I'm going to live with my mom because no man would want me and sell my story to Oprah because I'm cool like that.

That would have Ms. Octuplet beat!

Actually, I find the whole situation to be revolting--especially the fact that Ms. Octuplet now has a publicist and is reportedly seeking $2 million for the rights to her story.  yep, that's how she's going to pay for those babies.

The fact remains that the babies are here now. It's a little late to do much but make sure that they grow up as healthy as possible by whatever means it takes. Sitting here screaming about her stupid fertility doctor does nothing to change that fact...or the fact that their mother is a nutter. There are many many many children who are born to parents who are just as irresponsible..and just as mentally ill as she is...(if not mentally ill,...living in a dream-world for sure!) Medicaid, welfare and other public programs take care of them. Why not these ALREADY viable babies? Get a grip people. They are here now. It's a little late to change it. Maybe now we can pass some guidelines for fertility specialists that were never set in place before. DUH.

I'm sorry - has anyone suggested that the babies be neglected?  Obviously society/taxpayers will have to foot some of the bill since this woman decided to have a brood this large, on her own, without establishing financial security first - it's the blatant irresponsible vanity that people are criticizing.

I'm certainly not begrudging the kids or infants - I consider them to be unfortunate victims in all of this.

Agree Santo. One almost finds oneself tempted to try and legislate a scenario like this, but I can't really see how that would be possible.

I agree. Nobody's saying that these kids shouldn't be taken care of, it's not their fault their mom's a nut job.
