EDNOS (chewing and spitting out food?)
Hey, Well I have no idea how to say this, but ive been chewing ALOT of food (cookies, chocolate, cake) and spitting it out and I KNOW that it's disordered eating and its pretty bad for me, but sometimes its just easier to binge and spit it out..well ionno..i know im pretty screwed up right now but i am trying to stop, anyone have any ideas or can relate?
Reason: Locked - promotion of starvation diets or habits that exhibit signs of an eating disorder ("pro-ana", "pro-mia", etc.) is prohibited.
I don't know what to tell you. Mostly I did it when all I could have was pureed food, and I'm a texture person. I don't care if a food TASTES good, if the texture's bad or off I can't eat it. Probably why I can't stand couscous.
I don't know what to tell you except that if you don't swallow the food, very few if any of the calories or nutrients get absorbed (no matter what they say about babies and osmosis).
Good Luck
Von
Thats definitely disordered eating. Be careful, it could lead to worse eating disorders.
It's good you're not eating the food, but try and take the next step. Take the step to not put the food in your mouth at all. Just work your way towards this..
You can do it. Because you want to overcome this. =]
But no, it doesn't seem to actually affect your overall health. It's just kinda` gross. Xp
I don't want to sound harsh, but I really hope you won't ignore this. I think it's great that you brought it up, it's an important first step.
what percentage of calories of the whole food do you think is actually swallowed by doing this?
Negligible. The amount you would burn sitting around doing nothing for 30 min. :)
Although it isn't any official ED that I know of. Compulsive behavior of this sort is believed to be a characteristic of Bulimia. Piles of medical data follow:

chewing and spitting in itself is not an eating disorder, but doing it is one way EDNOS can manifest itself - its similar to exercise bulimia - you do eat, but in a way so that you are still deprived.
Also;
Diagnostic criteria for Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified
(Adapted from DSM-IV-TR)
- All diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa are met, except the menstrual cycle is normal.
- All diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa are met, except weight is normal for height and age even after considerable weight loss.
- All diagnostic criteria for bulimia nervosa are met, but the frequency of binges is less than twice weekly and for a duration of less than 3 months.
- There are recurring efforts to compensate (such as self-induced vomiting) for eating only small amounts of food, but body weight is normal for height and age.
- Regularly chewing and spitting out large quantities of food without swallowing.
- Binge-eating disorder - regular episodes of binge eating, but with no recurring efforts to compensate, such as such as purging or excessive exercise.
as number 5 clearly states, this behaviour could be considered EDNOS. Not all EDs involve starvation or purging, you know.
Tasting your food without the guilt.Personally, I think that is the biggest problem with chewing/spitting. The guilt -- no one should ever feel guilty for eating. There are things we probably shouldn't be consuming (I'm a vegan; let me count the things... haha! Just kidding!) but provided it isn't totally lacking of nutrients of any sort, there's no reason to feel bad about it.
This statement is, of course, making me a huge hypocrit but even though I don't practice what I preach doesn't mean it ain't the truth!
