Reason: Locked - promotion of starvation diets or habits that exhibit signs of an eating disorder ("pro-ana", "pro-mia", etc.) is prohibited.

I completely understand what you're going through.  I did it for a while after my gastric bypass surgery 12 years ago when I was positively desparate for foods I could not have.

I don't know what to tell you.  Mostly I did it when all I could have was pureed food, and I'm a texture person.  I don't care if a food TASTES good, if the texture's bad or off I can't eat it.  Probably why I can't stand couscous.

I don't know what to tell you except that if you don't swallow the food, very few if any of the calories or nutrients get absorbed (no matter what they say about babies and osmosis).

Good Luck

Spitting out masticated food leaves a good taste in your mouth? Gross!!

Thats definitely disordered eating. Be careful, it could lead to worse eating disorders.
I did this a few times while I was overcoming BED. It actually helped me get over binging, because I felt so degraded from doing it.

It's good you're not eating the food, but try and take the next step. Take the step to not put the food in your mouth at all. Just work your way towards this..

You can do it. Because you want to overcome this. =]
Um. Just wondering. Beyond the fact that it is disordered eating... why is it bad for you? Its not worse than just eating something, right?
Good question Sarah.. I have no idea myself. Maybe because it's abnormal, and it could possibly lead to the next step of vomiting instead? Dunno.

But no, it doesn't seem to actually affect your overall health. It's just kinda` gross. Xp

I have done this in the past at different times (mainly I forget about doing it as it's not very fulfilling).  I always managed to be able to spit most of it out.  Depends on how much junk you are actually swallowing.  Can't be as bad for you as binge eating, that's for sure.  But it probably is some sort of disorder.
This all sounds like a waste of money to me.  I don't think I would be able to do anything like this for that reason lol.
it's bad for you to c/s because it activates your stomach acids. You get hungrier than you otherwise would be.

ITs definatly something you would want to get under control if you have kids around you. You dont want your kids to someday see mommy chewing up food and spitting it all out to me it is an eating disorder for sure. Could lead to the binging and throwing up of the food as well. Which will cause alot of health problems and terrible tooth decay.
This is definitely disordered eating.  It seems harmless but I really think you should talk to someone about it.  You could be setting out down a road you might not want to go down.  Most EDs creep up on you.

I don't want to sound harsh, but I really hope you won't ignore this.  I think it's great that you brought it up, it's an important first step.
I don't think by itself it's a disorder.   but it is disordered eating.  A lot of people with active EDs do it.
=[ sniff, yeah i heard it caused stomach uclers because too much stomach acid would build up and there wouldn't be much food to digest..well i no its been months but lemme tell u, I HAVE GAINED 10 YES TEN pounds from doing this...oh and not to mention ALL the money ive wasted =(..sucks. in the fall i have to go back to school and im trying to break the cycle by then, its getting better though so thanks for the concern =)
I would think that it is most definately  an eating disorder.  That is a very unhealthy relationship with food right?  So that would place it under that big category of "disorder."  I would stop that right away and if you feel like you are unable to then definately go see a doc.  Good luck to you :)

what percentage of calories of the whole food do you think is actually swallowed by doing this?
The only reason I'd spit out food that had entered my mouth is if I discovered there was .... a bug in it ?
if u chew food such as biscuits and spit it out how many calories of that food are you consumeing?
i dont think chewing food and spitting it out is a good idea as i heard you do absorb some of the calories if not half in the food still including the fat and other intakes which r in it.i lose weight better when i dont do this after i heard that, so it a good idea to giveit up

what percentage of calories of the whole food do you think is actually swallowed by doing this?

Negligible. The amount you would burn sitting around doing nothing for 30 min. :)

Although it isn't any official ED that I know of.  Compulsive behavior of this sort is believed to be a characteristic of Bulimia.  Piles of medical data follow:

chewing and spitting in itself is not an eating disorder, but doing it is one way EDNOS can manifest itself - its similar to exercise bulimia - you do eat, but in a way so that you are still deprived.

Also;

Diagnostic criteria for Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified

(Adapted from DSM-IV-TR)

  1. All diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa are met, except the menstrual cycle is normal.
  2. All diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa are met, except weight is normal for height and age even after considerable weight loss.
  3. All diagnostic criteria for bulimia nervosa are met, but the frequency of binges is less than twice weekly and for a duration of less than 3 months.
  4. There are recurring efforts to compensate (such as self-induced vomiting) for eating only small amounts of food, but body weight is normal for height and age.
  5. Regularly chewing and spitting out large quantities of food without swallowing.
  6. Binge-eating disorder - regular episodes of binge eating, but with no recurring efforts to compensate, such as such as purging or excessive exercise.

as number 5 clearly states, this behaviour could be considered EDNOS. Not all EDs involve starvation or purging, you know.

Tasting your food without the guilt.

Personally, I think that is the biggest problem with chewing/spitting. The guilt -- no one should ever feel guilty for eating. There are things we probably shouldn't be consuming (I'm a vegan; let me count the things... haha! Just kidding!) but provided it isn't totally lacking of nutrients of any sort, there's no reason to feel bad about it.

This statement is, of course, making me a huge hypocrit but even though I don't practice what I preach doesn't mean it ain't the truth!
