EEEEK what did i do?

Quote  |  Reply

So i had to babysit earlier today. I'm a 20 yr old college student and babysit 2 hours around lunch every thursday so their mom can go run errands. Works out great for me!

So this time i was running late, and i just decided to have lunch with the kids...whatever they were having! I normallybring a sandwhich or a salad or something. Anyway, they had the banquet chicken breast things ya know? like a chicken patty. on the box it said "1 patty is 160 calories" i was like "Ah,, thats not horrible!" so i ate one (No bread) Normally i dont eat crap like that but ya know...Later after i put them down for a nap, i looked at it again and it said "160 calories...80 calories from fat" then i looked in my calorie book.

and it said ONE PATTY is 290 calories, 19 GRAMS OF FAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what the hell?!?

which one is right?? What does the "80 calories from fat" mean? do i add 80 to 160?!? WHICH ONE IS RIGHT?! even on here it says the darn thing is 290 calories. Someone explain! i feel so sick, normally 290 isnt horrible cause thats all i had...but 19 grams of fat? jesus!

19 grams of fat isn't the end of the world if you don't make a habit of it :)  It's not going to make you gain weight, have a heart attack, or anything this one time.  It won't even kill you if you do it once a week.

It sounds like you normally eat really well, and since your handle is 'goldenathlete,' I can only assume you exercise, too.

In this case, if it were me, I'd assume the higher number is correct and chalk it up as a learning experience.

The truth is that we all have moments like this -- like the time I ate an entire can of supposedly 'healthy, light' soup, only to discover that it was in fact packed with something like three days' worth of sodium and a nutritional nightmare, LOL!

Okay...calm down : ) The 80 calories from fat thing just means that of the 160 calories, 90 of them were from the fat. There are 9 calories in every gram of fat, so if there are 90 calories of fat, there should be about 10 grams. That's not on top of the 160. As for the difference between your calorie book and the box...I would trust the box. They aren't allowed to mislable things, right?

Their website says 260 as well...not 290. Atleast thats a little better, but why would it say 160 on the box?!?

Have they recently updated to make them "healthier?"

I have done this more than once. Whether it is loaded with fat or not as you see everyone is saying, "hey it happens. "

But if you knew a way to help your system handle it, would you not feel better?

Here is a trick anytime your eating fatty foods and have no choice or starve or be embarrassed to say, "sorry I am on a diet!".

Pick up some capsules of cayenne, bring them with you every where you go.  Then when eating these no no foods, these great tasting foods, just slip a cayenne capsule in your mouth, half way through the meal.

This pretty well guarantees you, that your digestion will be able to pass most of the fat out before it can do any harm.

I founded this trick years ago and believe me it works.  So when being out with friends, doing pizza, chicken wings or such.  I am not the  "odd man" out.  Just do not over eat these bad foods.  But have some, then do your salad or other good food.

When I discovered this trick and further discovered that it works, I can now tell people.

Sure enjoy some of these great tasting foods occassionally, in moderation and without guilt.

enjoy life, enjoy staying fit, be happy!!

I always select the highest calorie total available - I'd rather over-estimate than under-estimate.  Plus, remember, whatever number you enter does not change the actual number of calories you consumed - your body knows what it ate.  These logs are tools to help us learn how to eat and exercise healthfully - they do not control what actually happens to our bodies.  So I say don't fixate over getting the calorie/fat/whatever totals exactly right, because that goal is not possible.

Plus, obsessing over calories is just another way of promoting the same compulsive behavior that led to the eating problem in the first place, right?

Progress, not perfection.

I've never heard of the cayenne thing.  Interesting.  I don't know if I WANT something that will help me eat high-fat foods without consequences.  However, I don't know that I DON'T want it either.  I guess I'll look into it a bit further.  My first question is:  What's that do to your gut?

I don't buy the cayenne thing, chaulk it up to an oops moment (you didn't know when you ate it how much it was...oops).  Go with the bigger number of calories just to be safe, normally they count the fat calories in with the total so just use the biggest one they give you. No worries it's not something that could totally throw you off, now if you ate the whole bag of chicken patties well that'd be a different story but you ate one! No biggie! It'll be fine I promise.

good points..the body is pretty amazing and it will serve you well but junk in is junk out...so with discipline I am convinced your body will do the rest.

...anorexic problems can develop that is why I try to get everyone to rest and relax..take your time..let your body adjust to what you are eating and slowing reduce your volume...shrink the stomach...

No one can set a goal for weight ...the body knows exactly what you should be as long as your giving it the "right" food and your happy with the results.

I find the BMI is a good indictor for a target area if you want one but I found I was happier 5 to 8 pounds heavier because I have a large chest and more muscle.

Make sure you have the exact same product, banquet makes a LOT of stuff.

I'd sneakily check the box again tomorrow to see.  Make sure that you know what a "serving" is, and see how many grams the box says each patty is, then check that against the grams per patty that the other sources say.  Maybe your calorie book has a different size?  All these things are possible, just check and recheck.

But then, I'm obsessed.  So I'll leave the "it's not the end of the world" to other people.  Eating a bit lighter tonight won't kill you if your daily lunch is not usually 300 calories, and fat, carb, whatever, it all gets burnt off if you don't go over your daily burn.

Your obsessive compulsive eh?  Like me!   lol

I do not know where you live but I am near Ottawa Canada...I found the Cosco brand of burg was good but different calories than the President Choice Brand from Loblaws..they are different sizes and different tastes too...based on the fat content I am sure.

Here is a trick I discovered:  I see nothing wrong with eating one burg but not the two I use to do.  I do the occasional bad food but as I told my other contacts...if you have cayenne capsules with you...take one in the middle of the meal...this helps push those fat calories out of your body faster before they can be assimilated into body fat.  And keep sipping on your water after.

@themassageguy - How about everything in moderation instead?

I'm seriously skeptical that there is a way to "push" the fat calories out of your body faster than digestion allows. No matter what, that food is going to pass through your intestinal tract.

Sorry, original poster, didn't mean to rant.

Well, don't know about doing it intentionally, but the other day the hubby tried a new stir fry sauce (chilli with garlic and hot enough that I ate it really fast so as not to kill either my tongue or my husband's ego) which certainly did "push" the fat out of me!  Lol, probably TMI but chillis in large doses can have that effect.

Excuse me?  You actually believe that eating cayenne pepper "pushes those fat calories out..." ?  Then why is Mexico one of the fattest countries in the world?

There is no magic food.  Also, water has no magic properties.

I weigh up all that packaged frozen stuff because I find the actual serving is larger than stated on the serving size. I know it's probably not possible in your situation to weigh it, but 99% of the time the calories are more than on the box.

I recently bought a box of reduced fat stuffed chicken breasts. The serving size is 1 breast, 5.5 oz. I took one out of the box and weighed it and it was about 6.3 oz. Not a HUGE difference, but enough to add calories that were previously unknown. Always gotta be careful with this stuff. lol
