Eek! Dannon dilemma!

Quote  |  Reply

According to Dannon's Light n Fit brand yogurt cups they use ''Kosher gelatin'' as a primary ingredient.  After doing a quick websearch this evening I found that kosher doesn't necessarily mean that it's plant-based, but rather prepared from boiled fish bones or animal hides, just ones that have been supervised by a rabbi.  What are the odds that these things are still safe for me to eat?  It really broke my heart when I finally took a close look at the lable today...

I'd pass--gelatin is bad news

The soy yogurts by Silk are FANTASTIC: low in fat, and have a normal amount of calories...  plus the probiotics of course, and no animal products at all :)
Gelatin is icky. I love the soy yogurts and the soy pudding with the panda's on the box are awesome too. I'll find a name, surely its not Panda Pudding ....

Nicole - I'm a vegan as well! Holla! :)
Hey! Awesome--I added ya
So sad, same thing happened to me a few months ago.  There are a few yogurts that are ok.  Try greek yogurt, or soy yogurt if you are vegan.  It is indeed a sad, sad thing to lose the light n fit, cause it tastes so good and so low in cals.
wow, I didn't realize gelatin was in yogurt. I was vegan for some time, and unfortunately I didn't do it right because I ended up sick. Once I work on all area's of my  health I am going to head back down the vegan path. One thing that I still do not allow myself is gelatin though! It is in a lot more things than people expect though.

Tink
I checked out the yogurt today, a lot of them use fruit pectin instead of gelatin, so yogurt is still safe, just read the label carefully.

Actually most yogurt and sour cream bought at the store has gelatin.  The one kind that I seem to be able to consistantly find is for Babies but is tasty and is small portions for the calorie concerned.  YoBaby Yogurt is gelatin free, a little expensive, but an option. Also It is higher calorie because it isnt meant for adults health-wise but i scoop the "cream" aka fat loaded layer off the top and have the rest.  Good luck
There are some gelatin free yogurts, most of them are the health food or natural variety, also the plain ones.

Generally geletin is added to mke a thicker product adn it keeps it from separating.

All gelatins are animal basied. Plant celluose can be used as a substitute in some casess (ie drug capsules),. but unless it specifiically says plant celluose, assume it is animal.

Kosher means no pork and made in accordance to Jewish dietary law, and verified by a Rabbi.

I know the Nancy's brand o' yogurt (here in the NorthWest) is vegetarian.  The other cool thing about it is the flavored yogurts don't have nasty high-fructose corn syrup:  it uses agave nectar.  Way to go Nancy's!
