How efficient are condoms? Can pregnancy be prevented with them if youre not on BC....I went on it and stopped because I had really bad side effects and ended up in the hospital. Because I've been having sex only with condoms can pregnancy still be prevented?
Definitely not a guarantee. Condoms break, fall off, etc. They do have the added benefit of helping to prevent STD's.
Here's a good chart of the different methods of BC and how effective they are:
http://kidshealth.org/teen/sexual_health/cont raception/bc_chart.html?tracking=T_RelatedArt icle#
The chance of pregnancy is greatly reduced. Condoms are about 95% of the time. Often the 5% is caused by misuse. Make sure that when your partner pulls out that they hold onto the base of the condom to prevent the condom from slipping off. Sperm can live in the vagina for (I believe) up to two days.
Even BC pills are not 100% effective, only abstaining is 100%. I know a woman who used BC pills, she menstruated and sex with her boyfriend after, still on the placebo pill and she became pregnant. She ovulated right after menstruation.
From the Planned Parenthood website:
Each year, 2 out of 100 women whose partners use condoms will become pregnant if they always use condoms correctly.
Each year, 15 out of 100 women whose partners use condoms will become pregnant if they don't always use condoms correctly.
The problem with statistics is that we don't know how many times said couples had sex during that one year period. Those 2 or 15 women who became pregnant may have had twice as many sexual encounters as those who didn't.
To answer your question: you do NOT have to be taking birth control pills in order to successfully prevent pregnancy with condoms. However, condoms used as a backup to birth control pills will lower your chances of getting pregnant more than just using condoms alone.
Oh ya I knew I forgot an important piece of Information.....When my boyfriend "ejaculates" he pulls out even with the condom so this prevents pregnancy even further right?
Thank you for the help everyone
That's correct.
ETA: It's correct as long as he holds the condom. If he pulls out and the condom comes off, it increases your risk of pregnancy.

they are probably actually expressing risk ratios in a way that does not scare off people who are bad at statistics/number comprehension. meaning, i'm sure they corrected for amount of sex in some way and the group risks are directly comparable.

How can you not know what that means? It's when he comes. Yes, condoms are pretty effective. They're also the only way of protecting against STDs. The advice that they aren't effective is just rubbish from the abstinence-til-marriage campaign.
