Egg Donation has anyone ever done it?

Quote  |  Reply

I keep seeing these ads about donating some of your eggs. I'm not using mine and I would like to assista a couple in there journey to conception. My question has anyone ever done this? What was your experience like? Did it affect your chances of conceieving when you finally did try have children(if you have tried since then)? I'm single and not planning on having my own children any time soon but I do eventually want to.

I'd really like to hear from some real life people.

Hope this is in the right area if not someone will move it I'm sure.

My neighbor does this and I personally think it's not right.  (My opinion so don't go off on me!!) She does it strictly for the money aspect as she has two kids and is lazy and does not work!  I think if you know someone who needs them then it might be alright but just to sell them to the highest bidder???  I don't know if I want to see some child one time that looks like me and wonder if it's from me!!  Just my opinion.  Anyway--

When she does do it, it's like 8 weeks of hormone shots to produce a larger quanity of eggs and then after that they are harvested.  She gets REALLY moody--it's like major PMS time 1,000!!  She is on a National site so she's been flown to New York, Canada and others (we're from Wisconsin).(All expenses paid of course!)

I believe she said in order to do it (at least for her company) you have to be married or in a long term relationship, already have your children, under age 28 and a healthy BMI.  There is a lengthy physical and psychological exam before even getting the go ahead.  I do not believe there are not any complications afterwards as far as other children but I do not know why they want you to have children first??  If you are considering doing this just please do your homework first.  There are/should be referrals--you should be able to call other women who have done this and ask any questions.  If they have none--run!!

Good luck in whatever you decide!

I've thought about it...I could really use the money. I have a full time job, so I'm not lazy, promise! I'm a little scared off by the invasiveness of the procedure, but I think the hardest part would be the likelihood that I would have children out there that I would never get to see. While it might not bother me at the time, it probably would bother me down the road.

Not to mention that I have a couple medical conditions that might make me less than appealing to an egg recipient, but who doesn't.

Also (and this is my opinion so please don't get mad), I'm generally against spending large sums of money on fertility treatments. I know that this opinion may change once I actually want kids of my own, but after having worked in foster care and seeing all the kids whose lives are shattered because no one wants them, it boggles my mind that people pay tens of thousands of dollars so that their kid can be biologically theirs. So I would have to put that moral issue aside to donate eggs...I don't know that I could.

A family background is taken and it goes pretty deep. My mother's mother had epilepsy and so I couldn't donate. I was looking into doing this several years ago when I still lived in CO, more for helping a couple than my pocket book. It's a great opportunity. One which involves many doctor's visits, etc... more power to you if you're able to do it!

Yes MANY doctor visits every other day! I had to give myself shots  twice aday, blood and ultra sounds every other day. I had this procedure this last summer not for donation but for other reasons. It is VERY time consuming but it is a great cause to help a family in need. If you have any questions about the procedure just let me know :)

Thank you ladies for your response. I must admit the money sounds appealing too, but i also work full time and attend school half time. I'm a leary abotu giving myself a shot. I'm also on Lo-Ovral just for period regulation and I wonder if that affects anything, I mean I know i'll have to stop while I'm doing the hormone therapy right?

To the women that have done this, don't you ever wonder about the little 'you' out there?  I think it's a wonderful gift to give a couple that can not have children on their own, yet I think I'd always wonder if I had kids out there, how many, if they looked like me, etc.  One of my childhood friends used to donate her eggs, and her donating always made me think of that.  I don't mean to sound like I'm knocking it, I'm just curious.  :)

Well it would only be half me, lol. but so much of a person is how they are raised and the things they experienced in life. Especially at this age, maybe 18 years from then would I wonder and then and only then if the person actually looked like me.

So some of you might laugh at this, dont worry...i laugh at it now:

When i was 18 i got an underage drinking ticket! I got a HUUUUGE fine! i didnt have the money so i went to donate plasma  to pay for it and i didnt weigh enough so that didnt go over well. So i filled out this app. thing to donate my eggs to pay for my drinking ticket so i didnt have to tell my parents HAHA.

I was 18 at the time, so give me a break! I did get turned down because i was un-wed and stated i do want children at some point but i dont have them yet. So yeah and i think you have to be 21. So even now i'm not old enough (im 20). But its alot of money!!! you ovulate like crazy and you cant have sex AT ALL while they give you the shot cause you could end up with like quadruplets or something.
