Eggs in a Carton - Your thoughts?

Quote  |  Reply
Thinking of picking up some Egg Beaters, I like how they have an egg-white only option.

What are your thoughts on those? They don't quite seem as 'natural' as whole eggs:
-for those of you who use them - does that thought bother you at all?
-and for those who won't touch them... why not?

Once the carton is opened, how long will it last in the fridge? (& how can you tell when they've gone bad?)

Thanks :)

I see where you're coming from, I guess it might because its all in a pour container?

I use eggbeaters religiously, so personally, it doesnt bother me in the least.

Our cartons last about 1-2 weeks, so maybe longer then that

What are the ingredients?  Just egg whites?

I have been eating Egg beaters, egg whites from a carton for a long time now, they usually last 1-2 weeks. I like Better N Eggs which come with 3 seperate cups this way you worry less about spoilage, which is nice.

For animal welfare and taste reasons and because I prefer to eat whole-foods I buy organic free-range eggs whenever possible.  A yellow-coloured, long-life, pasteurised egg product from battery chickens  doesn't fit my definition of a wholesome or an ethical foodstuff

I have been using our store brand egg whites in a carton, they last a long time in the fridge and they taste great!

I usually use

2 egg whites ( 63g of carton eggwhites)

+ 1 med sized egg mixed with a little water + salt and pepper to taste = great scrambled eggs.

or sometimes i use just the egg whites, they taste great and I wouldnt know the diffrence cept I opened the carton myself.

I use egg beaters - for my husband's cholesterol.  I don't really care that they aren't "natural." I see it as the best of both worlds - take out the cholestrol and insert vitamins.  Additionally, I buy a pack of four from sam's club and freeze them until I need them.  I just move them to the fridge when I need them and they thaw in a day.  Lastly, they do not taste as good plain - put add salsa and veggies and they taste just like eggs.

I really tried egg whites but just didn't see the benefit for the cost or taste.  The only way I'd see a protein benefit is if I put them in smoothies and I don't like that idea.  I loved eating big omelets, fried eggs or scrambles and if I'm really craving a hearty egg breakfast, I'll go for that.  I don't like substituting "diet food".

I love Egg Beaters! I used to eat an egg beater omelette every morning with a half a slice of fat free Kraft American cheese. Couple that with a piece of whole wheat toast and soy sausage and you've got a super low calorie, high volume, high protein, high fiber meal! Excellent substitute for whole eggs, never bothered me that they weren't "natural". Now I live abroad and don't have access to egg beaters, sometimes I make an omelette with 2 egg whites and 1 whole egg, but it's just not as convenient and it seems like a waste to just throw away the unused yolks. I guess that's more important to me than being "natural"...that's just my opinion though...

I eat them all the time. I cannot tell the difference between egg beaters and regular scrambled eggs. They taste the same to me.

They also make a southwestern variety. I often put them in a whole wheat wrap, add some jalapeños and hot sauce and eat that and a sweet potato for lunch. I also make a big batch of scrambled eggs with them and add mushrooms, onions, peppers and potatoes and we have that with toast for dinner.

Thanks for all your replies and thoughts!

Decided to give it a whirl and bought my first box yesterday! Hope it lasts a while in the fridge.... if I dont open it, does it really last till the date on the carton (Aug 23!)??

No, that's only if unopened.  Once opened, they last about a week.

I just opened a carton of Egg Creations that expired on June 21 and it was just fine.

One time, I even [accidentally] left them out on the counter overnight, and not only were they okay after that, but they lasted for at least five more days when I put them back in the fridge...

Typically when I eat egg-whites from a carton I eat the entire carton - so I know nothing will go bad! (HAHA!)... I think these types of eggs (whites) are just fine & perfectly healthy ALTHOUGH some products are starting to add sugar & other odd ingredients to their list... which is why I recommend you read the label before buying!
