So what is the deal w/ eggs... are they a "bad" food or a "good" food if you only eat the whites? I've read contradicting things so i just want to be sure...
Also what is your fav way to eat it?
Thanks!
Eggs are great. Full of protein and good fats. People worry because eggs are high in cholesterol, but it's a different kind that isn't damaging to your arteries (unless you already have cholesterol problems). Still, don't go eating like 6 a day or something.
Don't think of specific foods as "bad" or "good"... almost all foods can be "good" in moderation but all foods are also "bad" when you eat too much of them and overload on certain nutrients, OR neglect certain nutrients. The "best" food plan includes a variety of fruits, veggies, grains, meats, and even fatty foods, etc. The key is to figure out what balance is good for you...
As for egg whites, they are very helpful for weight loss because they are nearly a "pure" protein source, thus having very little carbs/fat and very few calories. They will help fill you up for only about 15 calories per white. You also think you are getting more food psychologically. One of my favorite ways to eat them is to make a veggie omelette out of "egg beaters"-- liquid egg whites that are colored yellow. For only about 60 calories coming from eggs, I can have a very large omelette + fillings, and I don't feel deprived.
My second favorite way to eat them is by boiling whole eggs to make hard boiled eggs. Just throw out the yoke.
And recently I found a recipe online for lower calorie egg nog-- search for it in google and you will find tons of choices.. it can be a great and filling treat! Hope thi shelped!
Favorite way used to be 2 eggs, 1 eggwhite and slice of FF cheese omelet.
My current favorite food is also from egg - boil can of chicken broth, drizzle in one scrambled egg and stir in 1 T cornstarch. Easy, too delicious egg drop soup with a splash of soy sauce. Plus 75cal egg, 15cal cornstarch and 10cal can of broth - yet it fills me like no other soup (eventhough it looks so bare).
Sauteed' onion, pepper and mushroon; 4-6 egg whites, slice F/F cheese, Omega-3 enriched wholewhet pita, ketchup or BBQ sauce. Yum! and extremely filling. Around 190-210 calories depending on the veggies and ketchup/BBQ sauce topping.
Some variation and occasionally I'll throw in a whole egg but my breakfast 4-6 days a week.
if you have a chlorestrol prob, eating just the egg whites wont hurt h=you. eat the yolks in moderation.
i love eggs! My favorit is to hard boil them..toss the yolk, cut them up and pu tthem on whole wheat toast with ketchup and if you like cheese. mmm...so healthy and good.
Whole eggs are a good, natural food. The yolks contain fat and iron, which we need for good health plus a natural antioxidant, 'lecithin' which is very beneficial. The whites are a good source of protein but eating them on their own is discarding a lot of the goodness of a whole egg.
My favourite way to eat them.... A generous spinach frittata (a thick omelette) with a squirt of sweet chilli dipping sauce. http://caloriecount.about.com/spinach-frittat a-recipe-r7741
Hardboiled egg whites RULE! Only 15 calories and 3.6 grams of protein in each one.
Yes, the yolks have many health benefits, but they also have all of the fat and cholesterol. While you can have too many egg yolks, you can not have too many egg whites.
I do eat the entire egg frequently. But when I want to pop a little protein, I just go for the white (or several).
