eggs and high cholesterol

Quote  |  Reply

ive recently found out that i have high cholesterol (not dangerously high, but around 220) which i guess is unusual, since im only 17 and not completely inactive. i decided to try to cut out as much pork and fatty meats from my diet as possible, and when i have a choice i eat white meat only (i dont prepare my own food, so i dont get much choice sometimes). anyway, i know eggs are not good for cholesterol, but i really love them, so i wanted to know if cutting out pork and fatty meats is enough, or if i should completely cut out eggs too (and i mean whole eggs...i know just egg whites is fine). basically, my question is, would it hurt me to eat eggs twice ot three times a week?

Hey there,  I also have high cholesterol and love eggs especially the yolkCry. My doctor told me that the biggest factors in having high cholesterol are genetics and weight. While I should watch the amount of cholesterol in my diet, it would be better if I lost 10% of my body weight.

So, in my case I have begun eating egg beaters. It's low cal and high protein and can make a nice omelet. However, every once and awhile I have a couple of eggs. It is rare because that little yolk is really high in calories and cholesterol which means I have to cut out something later.

The RDA for cholesterol is 300 mg per day and one egg has 200-250. I don't think it will hurt you to have a couple each week, but I'm not a doctor and that's who you should really ask.Sealed

Eggs actually contain natural antioxidants which counteract the cholesterol they contain.  If you eat them in moderate amounts... say 2 or 3 a week... and swap some of the meat, animal fats (lard) and full-fat dairy products in your diet for more vegetable proteins, vegetable oils, fish and low-fat dairy items, you should see an improvement.  Decaffeinated coffee also increases cholesterol levels... funny one that.

I agree with the previous poster that genetics, weight and activity are a big factor in cholesterol levels.  And it doesn't follow that everyone with high cholesterol automatically keels over with a heart attack age 50!   If you aim to be a healthy weight for your height, eat sensibly and get a good amount of exercise every day then you can mitigate any genetic effect and potentially live a long and happy life.

Thanks for your replies. i enjoyed a nice egg without worrrying about cholesterol today:) yummyyyy:D ill have one or two eggs a week, and never any more than three per week. ill watch the fatty meats.

good thing i dont like coffee, so i dont drink decaffeinated coffee either:D

Try making half of your main meals each week vegetarian so that you're not consuming as much animal fat.  Obviously not something in a rich cheese sauce (!) ... but dishes based on beans, lentils and other pulses/legumes are a great way to reduce cholesterol, increase fibre and also control your weight.  Oatmeal is another winner.  Choose the 'whole rolled' or 'steel cut' oats so that you're getting as much of the whole grain as possible.  A bowl of porridge for breakfast each day is a real cholesterol buster.
I found this article very interesting -- it's all about eggs!
i only like the white part of the egg.... so im safe eheheheheh, i regularly trade my boiled yello part of the egg for their white part eheehh
