Eggs in the microwave - what do I do?
Ok I tried to make eggs in the microwave today, I just put them in a bowl, mixed them up, and microwaved for 3:30 minutes and they're kind of icky. Really weird and fluffy and not like scrambled eggs at all - so what do I do? I only have a microwave.
My guess is that you put them in for two long and forgot to stir every so often.
Here are really simple and easy instructions with pictures.
Here's the way I do it,
-Crack three eggs into a bowl
-Poke yolks with knife
-Cover with plastic (helps to cook)
-Cook for about 2-3 mins (less or more depending on # of eggs)
MICROWAVED SCRAMBLED EGG 1 egg 1 tbsp. milk or water In a 1 cup glass measure or coffee cup stir together egg and milk or water. Cook on HIGH power 40-45 seconds or on 50% power 1 1/2 minutes. Scrambled egg comes out light and fluffy.
Recipe from cooks.com and I've used it countless times...
Hmm..what do you mean "fluffy." I like my scrambled eggs fluffy! Did you add too much milk maybe?
I prepare mine pretty much the same as the above poster (#3) and have never had a problem.
If you like poached egg, put 1/4 cup water in bowl, add your egg, but do not stir. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time until done. Drain off water and add salt and pepper to taste.
Just a note about ck6420's suggestions: everything sounds good except putting plastic in the microwave. Health professionals do not recommend that we do that anymore. The heat breaks down the plastic and toxic chemicals can get in our food. A wet papertowel can take the place, though, and does a good job.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE POACHED EGG TIP I LOVE POACHED EGGS!
By fluffy I mean like...spongey I guess. I didn't add any milk or water or anything, just eggs, bowl, microwave.
joye76, you make a very good point! Thanks :)
I'm going to try the poached egg in the microwave too! How cool, I hope it workds for me because I love poached eggs :)
Be very wary of trying to poach eggs in the microwave - the egg yolk is surrounded by a membrane, and it could easily explode and make a HUGE mess. I had a microwave egg cooker and you broke the eggs into it and then poked a hole in the yolk so that the steam could get out and it wouldn't explode.
It sounds like the OP way overcooked her 'scrambled egg'. Eggs cook very quickly so three minutes was enough time to turn it into rubber. Cook them sixty seconds then stir then cook another sixty seconds and they'll probably be done.
I ALWAYS explode my eggs... idk how. I even break the yolks.
But at Target a while ago I found a microwave egg-cooker! I loves it. It's my baby since I liked dippy eggs the most anyway, not fried. You just fill the bottom with water, stick a whole uncracked egg in, and microwave! It looks like a giant egg too lol. Good for dippy or hard boiled eggs.
Oh and I've recently met people who don't know what dippy eggs are. Imagine a hard-boiled egg, but with the yolk of a fried egg.
dippy eggs = soft boiled
I've never heard of a 'dippy' egg before, but I love them soft boiled.
I tried the microwaved poached egg this a.m. But I didn't measure the water, and I used it cold out of the fridge dispenser. At first it didn't cook enough, although I thought it was done... when I put it back in much of the water was gone, so it did start popping.
Next time I'll use water at room temp, and maybe flip it over? Anyway at the end it came out ok, although the yolk was a bit harder than i like.
"Dippy" egg -- so funny, but yeah, I like it, so graphic :)

Hmm. Maybe it's just my family then! You soft boil them and put them in the egg cup yeah? And then spoon off the top and dip toast into the yolk?
Something easy that I do is buy the containers of egg whites, and then pour them out into a bowl with some chopped veggies ( like tomatoes or green peppers) and just microwave them and they are like delicious scrambled eggs!
If you prefer the taste of actual eggs, you could also use the yellow colored egg beaters or egg whites, very easy since it involves no egg cracking! (I am lazy. :P )
If you buy some low-cal wraps, toast them a little, it is SO delicious to eat eggs inside them!
I had another go at poaching in a bowl of water using the microwave. I did it at 30 sec intervals and could see it getting done! I watched through the window which I wouldn't want my kids to do, but I'm old so I figure I can do what I want. Anyhow, it all went well, but once I was ready to eat it I poked the yolk with my folk and it exploded!
It was overdone and exploded, but I ate it anyway. Any tips for not exploding the yolk, joye76?
Thanks :)
I microwave my egg whites all the time and it is delicious. Just for two minutes or less. I don't know about the yolks.

That was the my dad's signature breakfast! He would make that for me and my brothers almost every weekend :)
Why not just cook them the old fashion way on a skillet, or boil them?
UD
Do you mean poach in a skillet, UD? As for soft boiled I seem to always end up getting eggshell bits in my egg!
I'm going to try poaching them in simmering water. I watched a few youtubes for inspiration :) I'm not against cooking the old fashioned way, I just want them to come out yummy with soft yolks...
I can't make eggs in a frying pan or boil them because I live in a college dorm room and the only option I have is a microwave and a minifridge - I love eggs and they're healthy so I'm making do.
