I love eggs! Mmmm...eggs.
Anyway, I've been buying Eggbeaters because they're loaded with protein and little else. However, they don't taste as good as real eggs...and they're expensive.
Eggs, although delicious, have a lot of fat in them...and more calories than Eggbeaters.
Which is better for fat loss, though? I don't eat a lot of fat anyway, so I don't know if it will hurt me at all. I'm going to the store today and I'm trying to make a compromise between what's best for me and what's best for my bank account. Can I buy normal eggs and mix one egg with Eggbeaters so it will taste better and use less Eggbeaters?
What do you egg people do?
what I've found is mixing one regular egg with eggbeaters is pretty good... I second you on it being expensive--I'm a college kid and trust me, I feel your pain... what I've been doing is eating regular eggs and just throwing away the yolk--this pains me quite a bit but I'm a vegetarian so I need the protein..
but mixing's fine... just try to have more egg whites/egg beaters than whole eggs--it's the chol. in the eggs really.. the yolk is full of nutrients so it's benificial for you to eat a bit of it, just not a lot
Well, Egg Beaters are made from 99% egg whites with some vitamins and preservatives added. Eggs have been given far too much of a bad reputation. It really depends a lot on how you make them and what your overall goals are. Here is my opinion, for what it may be worth:
1. 1/3 of the protein in an egg can be found in the yolk, along with 2/3 of the cholesterol.
2. Hard-boiled eggs are the best for you since they contain no added fat (e.g., vs. fried -- if you fry them use Pam or some other low cal/low fat spray).
3. If you are looking for just protein to help with the feeling of fullness and for the "biological value" you really need to look at whey protein. There are several types of proteins and whey has been found to have the highest amount of BV (biological value). This helps with repairing muscle and boosting the metabolism.
I've read recent studies that suggest that dietary cholesterol has much less effect on blood cholesterol than was previously thought.
Personally I stick with real whole eggs, and work them into my calorie total. Saturated fat aside, there are nutrients like B12 and selenium in the yolks, and I prefer the taste of whole eggs.
Poor old eggs... they can't reformulate to reduce their fat content, increase their shelf-life or add artifical flavours. They don't have a national ad campaign. They're stuck in the same boring 'non-smart', inconvenient, egg-shap ed, 100% biodegradable packaging that they've been in for the last several millennia and which will keep the contents fresh for several days.
And there's no mention of animal welfare on the Eggbeater website. Which presumably means it's a battery farmed product?
It also says "with real eggs" and "99% egg whites" with spices added. Some people may not like the taste or texture, but they're not unhealthy.
Eggbeaters don't produce their own eggs, they buy the egg whites, so why would they need animal welfare information?
Well, I know some people dont particularly enjoy the taste of egg beaters or egg subs and 1 egg does only have 70 calories so if you can stick with 1-2 eggs thats not a bad idea, but personally I need ALOT of food to feel satisfied thats why I opt for egg beaters at breakfast so I can save calories for my afternoon snack attacks.
I have to say I prefer complete eggs and if I know I'm going to have a particularly active day then I do a whole egg with eggbeaters. Most of the foods I eat are already low in cholestorol (sp?) so if I average my month out I can afford it.
If it's strictly the eggbeaters (my norm) I prefer to spray the pan, sautee some onions add in some seasoning, pour the eggbeaters and add a slice of low fat swiss cheese (50 cal). YUM!!! Sometimes I'll sautee some frozen veggies in there too. That's usually my weekend breakfast.

Exactly. I was on a near-vegetarian diet with no red meat, no egg yolks - hardly any cholesterol and my cholesterol did not go down.
Getting your weight down and exercising is more important, IMO, although I would avoid the trans-fats.
I don't give eating whole eggs a second thought. The fat in a boiled egg is 5 grams, but it has 6.29 grams of protein. A small fries from McDonalds has 13 grams of fat and 250 calories but only 2 g of protein.
I probably eat 5 or 5 eggs a week and my cholesterol is still much lower than it was when I was so heavy.
I love eggs, too, and your compromise seems reasonable. You should consider your cholesterol levels. Mine are high without eating eggs, and despite other people's assertion that eggs have gotten a gad rap, I have discovered that eating just five of them in a week significantly raises my level. For that reason, I use the eggbeaters exclusively.
If cholesterol isn't a concern, you should be just fine. Regarding the money, my area grocers have begun offering eggbeater knock-offs for a much lower price. Admittedly, I haven't tried them yet, so I don't know if the taste is worse or not.
If cholesterol is a concern, the other aspect of using eggbeaters is to sub them in your baking. The work great, and knock all that unnecessary cholesterol from your cookies, cakes, brownies, etc. You could save the real eggs as an occasional treat to yourself.
Just my two cents worth...hope it helps!

I'd like to make a recipe from a HungryGirl newsletter but I want to sub out the Splenda, Eggbeaters and Laughing Cow cheese (since at least 1 of them is in every recipe. :|
People who are concerned about cholesterol - there is a good reason why dietary cholesterol doesn't correlate with blood cholesterol. Your body MAKES cholesterol.
So you can eat ZERO cholesterol at all, and still have your cholesterol go up.
It's more related to your weight, overall fat and calorie consumption, and how sedentary you are.
I use real eggs from the farmers market. Happy scale. Happy me. Happy chickens. Happy farmer. Everybody wins!
Eggbeaters creep me out.
I would much rather seperate the yolk from 4 eggs then eat fake yellow egg whites from a carton.
i eat eggbeaters almost everynight for dinner. i get veggies form the salad bar at the store and cook them with some hot sause and pour the whole eggbeaters carton in there. its like a very low cal fritata
its only like 250 calories for the whole thing and its very very filling. I like pouring some salsa over mine.
and for those of you who don't know, egg beaters is just egg whites. no yolk means no fat just protein.
Bulk-wise, approx. 2 egg whites = 1/4 c/1 serving of egg substitute.
So... 12 eggs = 6 servings.
(Really, people, it's just egg whites with a bit of herbs/spices/minerals/preservatives -- and this way the yolk doesn't go to waste, it gets sold to bakeries, which use them)
We get our egg substitute at Aldis -- $1.89/8 serving pack. At that price, it's actually cheaper than buying 16 eggs. And, IMO less wasteful.
I eat my 2 eggs, over easy, with 2 slices bacon and toast with apple butter on Sunday morning, but I skip lunch (we eat dinner early on Sunday) and do oatmeal or a Slimfast for breakfast the rest of the week.
We get our eggs from friends who have their own chickens- if you ain't had farm-fresh eggs yet, go on a hunt and get you some. Brand new, farm fresh eggs make those things in the supermarket taste like Eggbeaters!
my husband switched to egg beaters for breakfast every day and he loves them. He only has omelettes with them as trying to make scrambled eggs with them is much different texture. But for omelettes they are great. The price of eggs anymore is not much cheaper then buying egg beaters unfortunately. It is just a matter of taste, preference and what each individual is looking for.
