Either greatest idea ever or....
I am going to try this tonight:
Take one serving of oats and cook them. Afterwards mix in some greek yogurt and with garam masala, and stuff it inside warm pita bread. This either going to be really great or quite awful. lol.

I love spicy things, but I don't think I'd want oatmeal and bread in the same bite. I do make grits with garam masala and add hot sauce to it, but I eat it all by itself.
So, how did your strange concoction turn out? Was it good?
It was meh. Definitly didn't go with pita. I think it would have been better if I doubled the oats instead.

a better way to make savory oats is to saute some veggies, onions and make a salty porridge/oat pilaf- yummo!not sure about the yogurt---too mushy!

The point wasn't really to make savory oats, but a stuffing for the pita bread. :)

umneydurak, your ideas are usually wonderful but I cant imagine how this could taste good! Maybe you could toast the pita bread till crispy to scoop up the oatmeal...but still - pretty vile!
I wouldn't go as far as to say it was vile, but yeah it wasn't my best idea. lol. I had a weird craving I guess, plus I like to try new things. :)

UD, I am looking for savory oatmeal ideas. any ideas?![]()
I am trying to limit my fruit intake a bit.
I haven't really experimented too much with savory oatmeal. I like mine sweet. ![]()
One thing I did try, and really liked, was to combine 1 serving of oatmeal (I used quick cooking one), 1 serving of cottage cheese, 1 serving of Horse radish cheddar cheese (any other strong flavored cheese will work), and half a serving of Fage (optional).
I prepared oatmeal according to directions. Added 1 oz of cheese finely chopped while oatmeal is still hot. If there is not enough liquid left to melt the cheese I added a table spoon of hot water. After mixing cheese well I microwaved the whole thing for 30 seconds to REALLY melt the cheese. Re-mix and add cottage chese. Sometimes I added half a serving of Fage, depending on how I felt. I think I also added some freshly grounded black pepper. I still can't decide whether I liked it more hot or cold the next day.
I keep thinking of trying something that will involve black beans and oatmeal, but not sure exactly what.

I tried this yesterday and it was SOOOO good- sorry, the pita part just reminded me...
Fill a whole wheat pocket-style pita with:
2 tbsp hummus
3/4 sliced banana
lettuce
Melty goodness in the microwave... Sounds a little wierd but I LOVED it... for some reason bananas and hummus actually taste delicious together :)
