Elk Burgers....UM DELISH

Quote  |  Reply

So, I have been buying these wonderfully delishous Elk Hamburger Patties (weekly...lol) from my farmers market. I love them. I shop at a few farmers markets in the city (Chicago), but I buy the burgers from the Green City Farmers Market. The most well-known, BEST market in the city, IMHO. The are simpley lovely. The Elk vender sells Elk burgers (in packages of 3 or 6 burgers ea.), Ground Elk (so you can make your own burgers/or other foods), steaks, jerky, beef sticks, and more. I LOVE them.

I simply season them with seasoning salt, pepper, dehydrated onions, and today I also used lemon pepper (which is a mix and also has salt, garlic, etc in it. BUt the dominent flavors are lemon and pepper, hense the name). I grilled them on my neighbors grill (ours is outta gas, and she is out of town for the weekend and gave me access to her grill as I watch over her house. We always use eachothers stuff....I love her! Best neighbor ever, and a close friend now too. Like my second mother....sorry to rambal...I tend to do so when I am excited).

The patties are about 6oz or so each before grilling, and close to that after. Little fat = small decrease in weight from raw to cooked. They are pricey but tasty and soooo worth it. Each patty, once cooked, is about 150 cals, 2-4 grams of fat, and soooo good for you (high protein, they're completely grass fed, etc...). They taste wonderful.

I am in love. I also have always likes Bison, venision, etc....but these my friend are even superior. If you have a chance to buy elk meat from a reputable vendor please do so.

Anyone else with similair experiences? Thoughts?

I have had eaten elk, bison, venison, and lean ground beef burgers.

I do not like venison burgers or steaks and won't eat them any more.

I love bison burgers and steaks--even dry and completely cooked.  I like my meat with as much fat as possible out of it without burning it.

I love 93% lean ground beef burgers, and eat them a few times a month.

I absolutely love elk burgers and elk steak.  It does not taste gamy at all.  I thought it would have the gamy taste of venison. but it did not.  It was so incredibly lean and full-flavored.

I, too, strongly recommend that people who eat red meat, but want more healthy cuts, try elk.  The reason I don't eat it very often is that I have to order it online and that gets to be expensive.

I never tasted Elk before, but it sounds yummy. Me want!

I know, buying online is expensive. As are the Elk products at my weekly farmers market (but I bet better than online). I beleive 3 patties are 1 pound.....and I pay $9 I think for that (I THINK, I think the 6 burger packages are about $16-17...). That is still only about $3.00 per patty, so less than ordering out. But, it's way more than supermarket lean beef...at my Jewel 94-96% lean beef burgers are about $5-6 per pound....more if shopping at a Whole Foods type store.

But, the Elk is healthier, brought to me right by a farmer (Elk farmer), therefore I am supporting a great business. Also, they taste the BEST.

I agree.  I do think elk and bison, grass fed, are very comparable.  I had my ground elk in pizza, spaghetti, grilled, broiled, pan fried, wraps, chili, etc.  It was all good!  But, to be honest, I don't like paying 3 to 4 times a pound what I can get 93-95% lean ground beef for.  One thing about all the frozen meats I have ordered online (grass fed beef--elk--bison), when they come, they are packed in dry-ice, vacuumed sealed, and, man, are they frozen solid (and sometimes I got a free styrofoam "cooler").  I have had great luck with ordering meat online--I just don't like the cost + the shipping cost.

You know fat is not bad for you, and Bison is already very lean. Just saying.

I don't know that fat is not bad for me, since I am not in the camp that saturated fat is a good thing to eat much of.  In general, my own feeling is that poly and mono are necessary fats, but trans should be avoided at all costs, and saturated should be consumed in moderation.  However, I rechecked figures for bison, and you are absolutely correct--it has a very low fat content.  Plus, again, you bring up a good point--bison is very low in saturated fat. However, the food cholesterol in all those lean meats is still reasonably high, assuming that a person has to avoid consuming very much food cholesterol.  For example, there is 82 mg. cholesterol in 3.5 oz of bison.

And an interesting point is that I think eating salmon and nuts in moderation is healthy, but they also have a high fat content.  So there is every bit the possibility that I just am biased toward the fat content in most meats, and I may or may not be correct in keeping those biases.

BOY DO I LOVE MY ELK.... and bison, and beef, ostrich, venison, goat, lamb... I could go on and on! ha ha!
