elle's diet diary

Quote  |  Reply

i just bought this february's elle (uk) magazine and in it they had this 'diet diary' page- i don't normally buy this magazine so i don't know if this is a regular thing but anyway they basically asked this british actress sophia myles (don't know her but apparantly shes on some american show moonlight) to list what she ate for a week and then got a nutritionist to comment on it.

now bare in mind that she is 5'6'' and has a personal trainer so probably works out quite a bit. she also does mention on one of te days that she snacks on nuts and fruit to keep her blood sugar up but that might just have been that one day (the wednesday)

oh and she says that she is a size eight

monday

wholegrain and sesame cereal with skimmed milk, peppermint tea (no sugar)

grilled chicken salad with water

seared tuna, crispy onion, spinach, miso soup

Tuesday

wheatgrass shot with cayenne pepper and ginger, egg white omelette with tomato

banana and pear with no-fat yoghurt

blackened cod teriyaki, brown rice, steamed veg

Wednesday

porridge, banana maple syrup

green salad with grilled veg

grilled chicken, broccoli, mushrooms sauteed in olive oil

Thursday

pear and 8 almonds, peppermint tea,

smoked salmon egg white and brocolli scramble

grilled prawn salad

Friday

smoothie with banana, orange strawberry blueberry and no fat yoghurt,

spinach salad with feta and pine nuts

steak and chips

Saturday

all bran with skimmed milk and water

vegetable soup

grilled tuna steak with salad

sunday

banana no fat yoghurt

mozzerella, tomato and avacado sandwhich on wholewheat bread

yellotail sashimi, prawns, miso soup, green salad

anyway to the point please can someone tell me if they think that this is healthy because maybe i'm craaazy but it completely floored me. i swear it was not enough. a banana for breakfast??? am i wrong? i know the pressures that go with moving to LA and trying to make it into those industries but...

anyway so the nutritionists only advice was to substitute the whites for the yolk, to make healthier oven chips, and to not cut out all carbs. my question is.....

what would you have said?

i personally would have said eat more but maybe i'm wrong...

ps yes i know its pretty sad going to the trouble of writing down her whole menu but i'm bored!!

maybe its just because each day is only three lines that its confusing me Laughing i can't eat just three times! but everyones different!

That is no where near enough food.  Especially with her working out and being 5'6.  Definitely need some snacks added.

ya I'd also say eat more, another one that struck me is that she eats seafood five days out of seven, I don't think that is healthy at all, thinking about the mercury content..

Celebrity "diet" plans are often tantamount to "starvation diet". This is a clear example of one of them. There is no possible way she is taking in enough calories and if she is she is scraping the barrel at the bare minimum.

I know how magazines work and I'm pretty sure that the actress eats nothing like that.  It'll be something the magazine has jotted down and her agent signed off to make it look like she's a health freak with the dainty appetite of a sparrow.   (Snacking on nuts and fruit can mean an extra 1000 cals depending on the quantity, of course.)  The real person is probably chowing down on a pizza with a pint of white wine and a packet of ciggies for dessert Smile

"A pear and 8 almonds"....  LOL!

When it comes to bad influences my mother has a phrase which is 'if so-and-so put his hand in the fire, would you?'.... and it's apt in this case. You don't think it looks right and you're bang on the money.  Read the so-called diet, laugh heartily and then do your own thing.

"smoked salmon egg white and brocolli scramble"

I don't like fish, but this sounds scrummy XD.

But yeah, doesn't seem like enough food. Not seeing a lot of portion size specification though, but it's all so voluminous that I think large portions would be difficult (And sooo un-feminine, c'mon. ... *rolls eyes*)

Plus, there's that whole veracity thing. Magazines aren't under oath ;)

"steak and chips" - My kind'a meal! Better not be fish steak. Blech. Fish.

looking at her i really doubt she's eating a whole pizza :) and she did say that she had recently gven up smoking and had put on a stone as a result and so she had hired a personal traner to lose it!! and she does live in la. so i'm kinda inclined to believe that she does eat this. but yeah she could be packing in a lot of nuts!!

and it was more the nutritionists advice that bemused me? i thought she would mention just fruit for a meal whether it be breakfast or lunch is not adequate!

No nutritionist employed by a magazine to comment on the expenisve celeb employed by the same magazine is going to say something too derogatory.... it's always going to be borderline obsequious

People magazine does a big weight loss issue featuring people who cut their weight in half naturally. Well looking at what they eat now it is basically nothing......

Some other mag, glamour or marie claire allllways shows women who are supposedly 5'4, size 8, and like 155lbs........

I don't know, I never really believe these magazines....don't get me wrong, I read them all the time but I take it with a grain of salt because you are right, a lot of it is BS

I prefer reading the ridiculous coffee room gossip real-life magazines if I have to read any of that.

"I GAVE BIRTH TO A BABY ELEPHANT!"

"MY MAN'S DOUBLE LIFE AS A DOG!"

"IT CAME FROM THE U-BEND: MY HAUNTED TOILET!"

Hey, at least you know those sorts of headlines are either tripe or are going to make you sit there in disbelief before you even get into reading. >_>

Oh my, are they stories you made up, Ellie, or real ones that you saw?  If the former, you are set for a career as a tabloid journo!

Thanks for the chuckles!

Mel. xox

Former. Made them up. Though I think I HAVE seen one about a haunted toilet...

yeah, I seriously doubt this actress eats any of these meals.  It's probably her agent and/or nutritionist who put together a list of "suitable" foods to make it sound as though she is superfit & healthy.  I mean, who eats a pear & 8 almonds for breakfast?  Not a handful of almonds, mind you (not even 9 or 10), but exactly EIGHT almonds to go along with the pear.  Sounds delicious, right?  Bleh

There you are, then.  That career's begging for your attention.  ;-)
