Quote  |  Reply

I thought I was a peanut butter fan until I tasted natural pb. That stuff is seriously vile! It taste like somebody chewed up some peanuts and them spit them into a jar. YUCK! Can somebody please tell me how to make this gross stuff taste edible? I don't like wasting food.

It could be that what you thought was peanut butter all along really wasn't, if indeed you were eating things like Jiffy , Skippy, ect.  Maybe you have become used to all the unnecessary (and unhealthy!) stuff that is added to these, like someone who has to cut out salt and initially finds food tasteless, because their palate has been bludgeoned into submission.  It's also possible that you ended up with food that has gone bad or rancid - you didn't say if you got it fresh or not.

Your best bet is to find a store that you can grind your own at.  Make sure the grinder is cleaned often and taste the stock before grinding to make sure it tastes OK.  And a store that does a brisk business is better for obvious reasons.  Let a bit come through the grinder first to eliminate other nuts that may be in the spout and to get out any that may have been sitting around.  You will need to refrigerate any natural nut butters to reduce separation and prevent rancidity, that's just how it is. And only grind what you can reasonably use in a few months.  Maybe try other nuts like almond or cashew.  Hope this helps.

OMG, ME!
I hate natural/organic peanut butter. It's not sweet at all! Just have like a tbsp of regular peanut butter if you're worried about calories. Here's a snack I love.

Toasted english muffing with 1tbsp of peanut butter and 1 tbsp of jam.
Only 280 cals and it's delicious!

I'm just the opposite.  I can't abide by the over processes stuff like Jif, Skippy, Peter Pan.  There's so much added sugar and hydrogenated oils, you can't really tell it's PB.

I can't imagine eating PB with sugar in it, and I just found out added salt definitely tastes like crap to me (I did waste that jar).   In answer to your question, however -- try stirring in a couple tablespoons of honey.   Just add, stir, taste until it suits your taste.

I am the opposite. I want my PB to taste like I just chewed on a whole two handfulls of roasted peanuts and ground it into mouth paste. Not like sugar.

Lucky for you and all of us that 'hate' something good for us or are trying to 'quit' something that our taste buds are constantly changing. Sounds like a solid case of sugar addiction that you have. You can beat it in three-5 days of kind of sucky days if you want and then your new taste buds will be revealed within 10 days to 3 weeks. By 10 days to 3 weeks, you will munch on a lettuce leaf and TASTE what you couldnt before! Natural peanut butter (DO buy it organic and freshly ground at a place with many customers fro freshest taste if possible). Check n make sure NOTHING that you buy in a package contains high fructose corn syrup- breads (try Exekiel breads and toast!) and stick to dried fruit when you are really needing a sugar fix. After a few weeks, even dried fruit will be TOO sweet to your new taste buds.

Good luck! (Look more into sugar addiction- its VERY interesting!)

i was thinking of getting natural PB today til i saw this post, i like my PB on the weet side.  i dont have a place to grind my own, is there a brand anyone could recc?

 Agreed 100%! Amen!

I was eating peanuts the other day and I put some on toast. It tasted so familiar... just like... peanut butter! Because that's basically what it was! Smushed up peanuts.

Jiff, Skippy, etc. are just vile. They are all hydrogenated and have corn syrup and/or sugars added. Not to mention maltodexterin, fillers, and what have you. Disgusting. I agree with the poster that said that if you don't like the taste of REAL peanut butter, you have never been eating "peanut butter" to begin with.

Invest in a Vitamix blender (order online) and you can grind your own nut butters, make flour out of wheat berries or rice flour out of rice....it's kind of the appliance of all appliances. But dont mess with the cheaper one- aim for the best..... ridiculous price but will make the best salad dressings, pudings out of old fruit, frozen banana puree.

I think it's at  vitamix.com

Good luck!

I love natural crunchy pb! creamy is good but ive always been a crunchy fan.

except I should be avoiding pb at all times.. i seriously finish a whole jar in a matter of days.,, I find that natural pb is less easy to binge on, but it still happens lol

Personally, I love Laura Scudder's All Natural peanut butter (crunchy).  Just peanuts and salt.  In fact, I love it TOO much.  Am giving what's left in the jar to my brother tomorrow because I can't stay away from it.  It's the best I've ever eaten.  Just my opinion.

thanks ROBIN, never heard of that brand tho, is it a meainstream 1?

Oh, sorry, didn't realize it wasn't available nationally.  I just Googled it, and it's made by Smucker's.  If you have Smucker's in your area, there's a Smucker's Natural peanut butter (crunchy) that's also just peanuts and salt.  I would imagine it would taste the same as Laura Scudder.  Now, it's the kind that you have to stir (really well) and refrigerate.  If you try it, I hope you enjoy it.  Like I said, it's the best peanut butter I've ever tasted.

Crazy Richard's is just peanuts -- no added sugar OR salt, just peanuts.  And it doesn't get hard in the refrigerator after you stir the oil back in (honestly the oil is NOT a bad thing).  You don't have to keep it in the fridge, however -- mine does fine out.  Although I can't buy it often as I will clean out a jar in a few days....

i THINK ive seen the crazy richard one but i could be wrong, i realize the oil is part of it, its from the peanuts, thats fine w me.

i know ive seen the smuckers one, i want to get some tomm at the store if anyone else knows a national brand that they like, thanks!

My supermarket at home had a make-your-own nut butter machine. They had different canisters full of nuts, with jars you could use underneath. You just picked the kind of nut you wanted and pressed "go" and the machine would grind up the nuts into peanut butter/almond butter into your jar until you turned it off.

Fresh, no salt, oil or sugar added peanut butter. That's the only kind of pb I have ever been able to stand, the rest taste about as close to real pb as nutella does to hazelnuts.

I haven't actually eaten pb in years though - I'd just rather eat other things.

I actually found that most pb has too much sugar in it even the natural stuff so I switched to almond butter. No sugar, a little less fat and calories, but a lot less salt.

My guess is like most people you are in need of a sugar detox and you will find  healthy foods have better flavor than you thought.

I bought the natural peanut butter (no added sugar or salt).  Went through a jar of it, and didn't really mind it, but didn't get all worked up over it either.  Then when my jar was out, and I wanted a peanut butter bagel, I used the "regular" stuff we had in the cupboard.  I didn't buy any more of the natural stuff... I'd eat the regular stuff off the knife all by itself, but I wouldn't do that with the natural stuff.  In fact, I usually take one more little scoop just so I can eat it that way.

Just my $0.02.  And for what it's worth, while I haven't done a complete salt/sugar detox, I have drastically cut down on adding those to my foods.

Clint

You'll get used to it. I wasn't crazy about it at first because I was used to the processed (added sugar + added oil) stuff. Now I cringe at the idea of "reduced-fat" Kraft peanut butter.
