Who else loves flannel jammies in the wintertime????
Hey, this is the lounge, right? And you can talk about anything you want, right? So, it's wintertime, it's cold, you're trying to cut back on the cost of heating your house or you live in one that just won't get warm. Out come the flannel jammies!!!! And flannel sheets if you have them. I even have flannel PJ pants with footies in them and I'm 50 years old. I live in an 1889 house in Virginia and the thing is cold. From November until next July, I'm going to be cold. Where are the hot flashes when you need them. I love hot weather but we only get the severe hot weather for a couple of months and then it's COLD again!!! Anyone else out there have a favorite pair of flannels????
Thats just one layer!
I wear an underlayer of thermal shirt and pants, a flannel nightgown and then a fleece zip up - what a site! Ive a large TV room that with a cathederal ceiling that extends to the second floor where all my heat likes to rise so I turn it on sparingly.
I tried sleeping in bootie slippers until learning how much feet can sweat, socks would probably be better.
Hey Sun, actually you are exactly right. I usually have a fleece robe or jacket over my jammies and slippers on my feet over the footies. LOL. How did you know??? you're also right about sleeping in the footie things. Sometimes I'll wake up and have to take the pants off because my feet can't breath (boy does that sounds weird or what?) but by then my flannel sheets are all warmed up. That cathedral ceiling thing is a problem too. The newest part of our house was built in the 70's and these people were definitely enamoured with the ceilings. The computer room, master bath and our bedroom all have cathedral ceilings where the rest of the house is lucky to have 8 foot ceilings and we have 8 - count them - 8 sliding glass doors to the outside just to let a little more cold radiate into the house. What were they thinking????
My husband swears I'm some kind of pj superhero; I am able to get home from work and change into my flannel bottoms, t-shirt with hoodie and comfy fur-lined slippers in a single bound in the winter! We live in Olympia, WA and right now it's dark at 5pm. I'll make dinner and turn that gas fireplace on and sit and correct papers 'til bedtime! I sleep with my SmartWool socks on too! It's okay with him. After 23 years he knows if I'm happy, he's happy!
I love flannel. I bought myself a flannel nightshirt for Christmas. Also have two set of flannel pjs--one with polar bears, one with "dozy" dogs. Not using any flannel sheets, but I would if I had them. Living in So. Cal. I don't really need them for more than a few months of the year... I almost always have a pair of heavy socks on when I go to bed, I hate cold feet :(
Hi Cranes4 - looks like this is your first day "on site" and come on in. I'll bet it IS cold there. You're further north definitely. I'll bet on the really cold days you can find a way to change clothes without ever taking everything off at once, can't you? I know I can get real creative not to have that cold air hit my body LOLOLOL.
Oh, yeah, there is a downfall to wearing flannel jammies with flannel sheets... It's kind of like wearing velcro - you get stuck and can't turn over or anything. Or on the occasion where I wear my fleece jammies instead of the flannels, I light the bed up like lightning bugs everytime I move because of the static electricity. Who needs a night light?
i bought a house a couple thanksgivings ago and being a single mom of two teenage girls, i just couldn't afford to have the heat up. the gas thing had settings for the whole day so i set it at 65 degrees during the day when noone was home. then 69 an hour before the girls got home from school then back down to 65 about 9pm. we had flannel blankets, sheets, pj's. you name it. i got the girls heated blankets. i am like you and love the heat much more. this year i moved in with my boyfriend and he has the same size house but it is a two story instead of a rambler and boy is it warmer!! he keeps it so nice and toasty! he works at 3am so he turns the heat on for us before he leaves and then he is home at noon. he stops at the grocery store and gets dinner on his way home, goes for a run and then builds a nice fire in the basement. when we get home he is cooking dinner and the house is toasty!! if the guy is trying to keep us around, it's working!!!

Our house is 64 degrees! We are scrooges when it comes to turning on the heat. I wear sweats to bed and we just put the flannel sheets back on the bed- definately a lot better under the covers and warmer too. My dog is at the foot of my bed and helps to keep my feet warm- then once my husband gets up at 4 am- the other dog gets up in his spot and lays his head on my side- I woke up to a bonus this morning= the cat was also at my feet. I didn't want to climb out of bed! I was all toasty with living, breathing fur all around me to keep me warm. But after I got up- I went downstairs and played the Wii for 1/2 hour and worked up a sweat playing tennis...
jen does that wii really work for use in working out? i tried to get one for the family for christmas but they are all out. they say maybe by feb.
Who doesn't wear flannel jammies? I even wear them in the summer. They are my favorite attire, especially if I am staying home all day!
I have at least a dozen sets of flannel jammies... some are older and worn down to the point that they are softer than a kitten. Others are full and fluffy. The designs vary: plaids, cartoon prints, you name it. None are my favorite, as they each have different qualities that I enjoy.
The best accessories are the fuzzy socks, of which I also have at least a dozen pair.
And I live in South Texas, where it is almost always hot! So, I use regular sheets... it's just as well, because I don't want to get stuck like a fly on flypaper (as someone described earlier).
My husband bought me flannel pj's for Christmas. He picked them out himself and keeps asking me if I'm sure I like them. They are cute, however I may have picked different ones if it were up to me but I'm still not going to return 'em! They are comfy after all.
Sportstergirl- I find that the tennis is a pretty good work out- I was sweating in 30 minutes. My arm is a bit sore too. They also have different games where you have to keep trying to hit a target on a wall with the tennis ball and it is really hard- definately keeps you on your toes! Keep trying to locate them- keep calling the stores- I know Target gets deliveries on Sundays- at least here- that is how we were able to get one. Granted it isn't a work out like walking or anything but it at least gets you up and moving- not as much as DDR though I suspect. But it is something! And they also have a fitness test that you can only do once a day. It gives you three different sports activities to try and at the end tells you your age. Very challenging! And embarassing! I got over 50 and I'm only 41! Although this morning I was 39 which was good.
the best thing I ever got was a Polartec blanket. It's cozy warm and I no longer have that "velcro" effect, or that static that susanfinkel describes, because I use my regular sheets. I'm going to buy another one! My cat Bubba hates that static! He likes to nudge me with his little nose and can get a nasty spark when there's static.
So good to hear Im not the only one running an ice house. Susan, these layers DO work. People think why deal with the cold but I can keep warm and spend my money on better things - different priorities. Granted, I grew up in a hold house getting dressed on the floor in front of the heat vent.
When my daughter was younger, she slept in my bed and we'd have several blanket layers. Then the cats would crawl underneath the covers with us. I slept through many alarms - I swear the heat would put me into a deeper sleep.
My mom, who's in assisted living, asked me in April to get her flannel nightgowns. It wasnt fun but I found an online site (and am waiting to get off their mailing list. She was adament on the flannel, and I appreciate it too but for warming I dont think you can beat fleece.
I feel guilty for complaining about the temperature since I'm in southern CA, but I'm a wimp and I live in flannel pajamas at the moment. In fact, I've got on teddy bear ones right now, and it's practically lunch time here! Haha.
I have discovered something that is even better than flannel pj's - SmartWool long john's!!!!! I got mine at REI.
They aren't cheap though. But worth every penny. Only I don't sleep in them; I use them as a layer under my running clothes, and as loungewear during the day (since I work at home). They're TOO HOT to sleep in!! We have a huge fluffy down comforter and even in the middle of winter I need to dress light to sleep. But during the day... walking around the house... the smart wool is the BEST!!
They also make socks ... so comfy... and much more breathable than polarfleece.
Actually- right now the house temperature is 62 degrees.... My hands are a bit cold trying to type...I'm just waiting for my hot flash to kick in later this evening! LOL....
Sun, it was really a pleasure to hear about someone else who grew up dressing in very strange places. When I was young, I remember dressing in front of the oven while bread was broiling for toast!! Yeah, we didn't use a toaster, not sure we even had one but with 5 kids within 8 years of each other, we pretty much put half a loaf of bread on under the broiler and just went with it. And the over was midway between floor and ceiling so it was the perfect place to dress. Pushing people out of the way, etc. You can't imagine how many pieces of bread we burned. Learned early on to scrape off the burn and put on plenty of homemade butter. MMMmmm maybe that's how this whole weight thing began...
Really glad to have had so many responses to the flannel thing. I was starting to think I was strange about it. Someone responded about having flannels that were SO worn out. I've got a flannel nightshirt that someone gave me at work about 20 years ago. It was made like a Dr. Denton kids thing with the colored bands around the wrists and it's a Christmas theme. Everytime I wear it now, something else rips because it is so threadbare but I just can't make myself throw it away. For Christmas, I got another set of polar fleece jammies from my sister (she knows me SO well) and my mother gave each of us girls a LLLLLooonnngg flannel gown. If you read about a death in the paper from someone wringing their own neck in a flannel nightgown, that's probably me. I tend to turn like a rotisserie at night so there is no telling...
Love reading this thread. We used to have a gas heater with vents on the top. I would lay my towel on there to get warm and it always ended up with scorch marks (mom wasn't too happy -)
I love flannel jammies, gowns, fluffy robes, houseshoes, I love to coccoon. I got the softest pale blue jammies from Santa, they feel like a baby blanket.
I think I will become FlannelWoman for my superhero name...

Oooh Strawberry - I love that superhero name!!! And your super power could be either superheating everyone so they melt or using the static electricity created by rubbing the flannel against something!!! Hey, we write a comic strip, get famous, make lots of money and have our very own nutritionist, personal trainer, boy toy, etc... Happy New Year and great to hear from you.
