Email Privileges Abused

Quote  |  Reply

Has anyone ever had the problem of members abusing their email privileges.

I made the mistake of replying to an email using my home system, and since then have been getting 6 - 10 emails a day... lots of it silly stuff that I know full well how to find myself if I should want the information.

I have had to put them on block in my home system, but if it continues might have to remove my email from this site entirely.    Any other suggestions?

This may seem like an obvious question, but since you didn't say in your post, I'm going to ask if you've tried responding and asking the sender not to send you any more e-mail?  If you've done that, and they persist, then I would report them to the forum administrators.  Some people are just looking for attention.  Good luck.

Yes, I did.. and thanks for your response... I agree they are looking for attention, but I am not prepared to be their object of affection.  I have a life, and a long line up of people vying for more attention in my own community.

I hate to come down hard on lonely people.  It is my hope they would see themselves, and bring it down a few notches.  1 email every other day or so is fine. 50 a week is abuse.

I'm not sure if you're getting spam or just unwanted forwards, but if you are getting spammed at your home email address, contact the administrators and let them know.  I had that problem once, and they were able to help me out.
you can block the sender.  it sounds like you're trying to be polite, but some people will take that as encouragement.

I don't dislike them.  I just don't want to be contacted by them 10 times a day.

I would call it similar to unwanted forwards cecily.  I think some people are very lonely, and think they are being helpful, when in reality they are actually becoming a nuisance.

fransen some email give a person the choice of sending to everyone in their address books at the same time this could be the reason. Ask this person to remove you from their add. book and contact you through this site only.
Ugh. I hate the people that forward mountains of email. I would recommend telling them that you don't get much time at the computer to read that sort of thing and it makes it difficult to find messages that are meant just for you. Thank them for thinking of you, but tell them that you prefer personal messages to mass mailings. They should understand.

i definitely don't see the need of putting your e-mail address up on your bio page.  there are plenty of ways people can get in touch with you through this site, and if you want to you can always pm your e-mail address to a specific member.  but just putting it up in your bio is like asking for unwanted e-mails.

if you really want to have it up, open a new e-mail account for the site (and listservs, etc).

Thanks aasil.... I did just that... I got rid of it in my bio, AND... discovered that my bio was searchable on the open web, so I clicked to prevent that while I was at it. There is just too much information out there now without assisting them.

I set up a separate e-mail box (yahoo) to give to members of groups I belong to.  That makes it easy to keep them sorted out and also easy to find the ones who spam or forward agressively, and also the ones who just seem to be needy.  I don't share that addy very much and it's not in my profile.

I recently blocked someone from my e-mail because of exactly the problem you're describing.  I wanted to be nice, but I just couldn't take it any more.  Their e-mails are directed into my junk folder.

I block them or just delete emails without reading them. I dunno, I don't feel I can be "harrassed" via email since I don't even have to look at their crappy emails.

I am a member of a VERY BIG church and am in the middle of a huge project that will gave me receiving hundreds of emails from that project over a very short period of time.  Keeping this project on target is hard enough.

Well, I learned my lesson.  I will never again give out my email in CC.
