embarassed to eat diet food?
i don't mind it, i actually can't see the difference between most and the original "full fat" version. im pretty skinny, but healthy. i do count calories to maintain, like most everyone else on here. but i'm super self conscious when i order a sugar free latte, or something. i feel really judged by the barista, or checkout clerk, or wherever im getting my food. why? does anyone else feel that way?
Reason: Moved to Food Forum
I think a lot of people think things like that. But the sad truth is that most people don't think about the people around them all that much...do you judge your barista for working there? Do you care if the lady behind you in line has purple eyeshadow?
I'm always convinced that everytime I wear the same thing twice in a week (ie black pants) to work, that everyone thinks I'm so gross and that I always wear the same thing....truth is, no one notices.
Hopefully that makes you feel less judged, but not irgnored!
i totally agree with thermal!i have a friend that thinks everyone pays attention to what she's wearing, eating or doing.for some weird reason everybody is out to get her(lo).like people don'thave their own problems to worry about.
i'm all about human connection and always pay attention to such things :) but thanks for your replies... i suppose there are a few aspects in which i should get over myself, and room for self improvement. however~ what about friends that make fun of splenda use for diet purposes, etc... mine do... rawawr
omg i feel the same way. especially when i am with my friends and order like a light frappachino or something. the real version is just gross if you think about it! not that a frappichino of any kind is the best thing to consume haha but still! i'm also pretty slim, which i feel like makes its more awkward, people think you are trying to not eat or something. oh well.
Yess. I am on the thin side of average but I eat really light and healthy. I always feel like people are looking at me when I buy stuff like that and thinking "does she think she's fat or something?" So I can definitely relate. Sometimes my friends and family even make fun of me. But I have learned to let it go.
Dont worry your not alone... i work as a waitress in a cafe for Greeks and it's custom for the employees to eat there also.. which I dont mind as the food is awesome...but i do get strange looks and get asked so many questions wen I eat the mixed salad with avocado or grilled chicken as opposed to french toast or the big breaky or club sandwich with fries..
they dont understand that i just love light and healthy food.. they think im 'dieting' just becoz im on the lean side.. ppfft.. i hate the 'you dont think ur fat do u?'.. juz coz u eat healthy doesnt mean ur tryin to lose weight!! lol
... i also hide my splenda tablets that i carry around with me in my purse lol.. i got caught once throwin one in my coffee and they were really worried thinkin it was drugs haha

Maybe you should fess up about your splenda addiction.....lol. I think if I saw white powder come out of a co-worker's purse, I might be a bit worried too.
hahah i would just start twitching madly "it's the diet! i need real food!" ;P
thanks for all your replies though...i had a hard time with this last night. like, i honestly don't know how tot deal with this socially!!!! i went out to dinner with my friends and ordered a really delicious salad, and one of them goes "you're not getting a salad are you!?" i was just like yes. hell yes. lol ugh... do you guys have any advice??
Until I got sick a few years ago and was put on steroids I never really had a weight problem. I would gain a few pounds and lose it again pretty easily. Nothing serious. I ate what I wanted and would fall to peer pressure to eat pie and second helpings. I was lucky that I was not really huge. But after the steroids and I gained 20 lbs, I still allowed myself to be pressured and gained another 20 lbs until I woke up.
When anyone gives you a hard time just smile and say "now you know my secret for staying slim" and let it go. Honestly, there is nothing to be embarrassed about.
What is worse is knowing you are doing the right thing for your body, are heavy, and have to put up with others judging what you do.
But honestly, if you quit judging others you will quit worrying about others judging you.

I do sometimes, but that's because there's nothing unhealthy about full fat foods, and there's nothing healthy about Splenda. So if I'm going with low fat or no calorie things, it's because I'm dieting.
I am also quite embarrassed, granted i'm underweight and need to gain a few pounds but i do eat and i eat a lot. i choose to meet my calorie requirements by eating healthily instead of junky food but it makes me nervous to say that i don't want my food prepared a certain way or to ask for a salad instead of fries because i feel watched and judged. in fact, i like to get to sit down restaurants before everyone else so i can talk to the waiter alone before the others are around so they don't know what i'm saying or how i ordered. a bit weird i know.
i tend to feel like this when i'm around friends. like i'll order fat free ice cream at coldstone or the guiltless black bean burger at chili's or skip the cheesecake at the cheesecake factory, and they'll look at me weird. i'm not overweight, nor am i really trying to lose weight. i just prefer to eat healthier things.
Even when I wasn't a nutritional eater, I would always order a "skinny" with Sugar Free flavorings. I used to feel that people would think that it's about time she ordered with fewer calories. Now, I really don't care what anyone thinks. Whole milk and full calorie flavorings make me break out....................with fat. I don't add that part though.
jennike, are you a very empathetic person? Do you worry about your friends' feelings too much? It could be that you feel like when you choose a diet food, you are reminding the people around you that they are not as conscious about their food choices as you are. You are setting yourself apart through your choices, and there's also some value judgment attached there, since the full-fat or sugary food/drinks the other people are buying are not good enough for you.
If that sounds like it makes sense to you, just acknowledge to yourself that yes, when you eat healthier you aren't running with the crowd, and even if that can feel uncomfortable it's very important to you, so it's worth it.
Who cares if it makes the barista or the person in front of you feel guilty about their choices when they see what you do - you're setting a GOOD example - be proud!

You don't always have to order a salad, sometimes the salad options are actually terrible for you! If you really want a salad, then give'r, but you can usually find a grilled options, something with lots of veggies and you can always ask for any of the high calorie extras (cheese, mayo, sour cream, cream sauce...etc) to be omitted/on the side. Sub fries/fatty sides for veggies/soup/salad. Don't be afraid to ask for things that aren't on the menu and there are lots of other options that will stop you from getting slack for ALWAYS ordering the salad....
I don't really care what a person getting me my latte, or rings me up thinks, and I am pretty sure they don't really care what I order/buy. It works out great for everyone.
