Have you ever tried home exercise videos? They make a ton of different ones from beginner to advanced to kick boxing to step aerobics. I used to go to a gym but with small children it became difficult, so I have used exercise videos for years with great results. You can do them when you want, wearing what you want (you don't have to worry that your exercise outfit doesn't match - lol.)
Try going to Collagevideo.com You can search for videos by your fitness level and by what type of exercise you want to try. You can even watch a preview to see if it's really something for you.
Once you feel more comfortable, you can move onto that gym.
I do tae bo and its wonderful! You can get a "boot camp" kit at target which has 3 videos with the billy bands, that way you can build up resistance and continue on with your workout as you get in better shape.
Its totally high energy, and i (one who has never been very interested in exercise) am in love with it. You can take it at your own pace and it incorporates cardio and weights.
I used to belong to a gym and it was a great atmosphere. No one is judging you, and if they are watching you its because they are thinking "how can i get my body to look as great as hers!"
Try getting a guest pass. Lots of places do that so you can try it out and decide if you like it there. You'll find something that suits you!
You shouldn't be embarrassed - at my gym, there is just about every type of person you could imagine: old, young, thin, muscular, overweight, kids, etc., so no one really stands out. Don't let people's judgement keep you from doing things you want, or you may miss out on a lot of opportunities. :)
i have been going to the gym for four years and am still nervous about going into a pool with other people. i have no idea why.
give me a lake, and i am off like a dolphin... pools though... hmmmm... scary.
took me a year to run on a treadmill too! yup, i am a scardey-cat for no reason at all. it helps to watch the classes, watch other people, and it will prove that you won't stand out - the services of a gym are there for everyone~ go at your own pace but try to do something that edges you closer to the group every visit. choose a class that you would not find physically challenging to get used to the group setting.
younger members do not stick out at my gym as there is a real broad mix of people.
i found the yoga classes and swiss ball classes easiest to start with - it was a month later i was trying step, pump, dance and all kinds of other kooky classes i thought i would never try! have super fun!
When i would go to the gym, i would watch the classes and think "that looks like fun! wish i could do that." That large window scared me a little... the rest of the gym can watch you workout! but then, i decided to try pilates - that was so fun!!! then i tried yoga, very relaxing, and finally got up the nerve to try step cardio classes. It was the funnest experience i could have imagined. Everyone was laughing when they would make a mistake and just get back on trach and keep going!
Try lots of different things, you'll add lots of variety to your workout and will adjust really quickly.
try getting a work out buddy. its always nice to have someone else there to motivate you and to be there when you go to the gym. i hate to go to the gym by myself, but once you get used to going its not so bad.
ive worked at a couple of gyms, and the last one had few patrons my age. but i still attended classes, and found that all the older ladies in my classes were super nice and supportive. they are there for the same reason you are - to get into shape and be healthy.
try out the different machines and what not. you could even look into having a personal trainer set up a workout routine for you.
dont be intimidated or embarrassed, just enjoy your workout and look forward to reaching your goals!
