Not enough calories to gain?
So I was on a pretty restrictive diet for a little while a few months ago. I never had anorexia or an eating disorder per se, I just wasn't happy with my body, did the stupid thing and starved myself for a little, and lost weight.
I decided to gain a three or more months ago. For the past few weeks, I've been eating just over 1900 calories per day. I have been steadily gaining on this amount, between 1-2 pounds per week.
My question is, I know this is not the "typical" amount people consume to gain, but my question is that since I HAVE been gaining steadily on this amount, should I increase? Just this past week I have gained 2 lbs. I'm 19, female. Not terribly active at all.
1900 is more usually a weight-loss/weight-maintenance amount for a 19 year-old woman, even if they are not particularly active. If you're gaining weight at the moment it's most likely because you're still quite underweight. (I note you were 110lbs in June and a BMI of 17.3) Weight gain acheived on low calories will probably stop long before you reach a healthy weight. If you're 5'7" a normal, healthy weight starts at about 130lbs. How far away from that are you now? Another 10lbs?
2500+ is the starting point for serious gainers. It wouldn't be a big leap from where you are now to add another 600 cals.... You'd have a lot more energy, you'd be better nourished and you'd get to a healthy weight a little quicker.
Thanks very much for the feedback, GI Jane

Frankly, before I began restricting, I was never over 125. The heaviest I have ever been was 127 around the holidays. Does that mean I have to get to 130? I am very small framed. My goal, at the moment is 125 by Christmas. I'm ~10 lbs from that right now...which I'm sure I'll achieve far before the holidays.
So youre saying that as I gain, my calorie requirement will go up? Should I really up all the way to 2500 right now, since I'm gaining at a steady, healthy rate at 1900?
To answer the last question, yes.... you have to go for the full 2500. It's for several reasons. First is to get you to a healthy weight a little quicker or, more accurately, bring your period of being underweight to an end sooner. Second is so that you are getting adequate energy and nutrition to function normally and heal properly, physically and mentally. Don't know if you lost your periods anywhere along the way but this is something else to keep an eye on.
You may never have been heavier than 127lbs in the past but now you need to treat your body as being 'in recovery'.. and that's a little different. You need to be in that 'safe' BMI 20 - 25 range to give your body a fighting chance of normality and also to give you some insurance against relapse and/or illness.
I know you think you never had an eating disorder, but when people who are already very thin are happy to starve themselves down to that low a weight.... that's really not normal behaviour. Go wholeheartedly for 130lbs... be truly healthy rather than 'on the borderline'
I'll definately try to get there asap. Thanks again ![]()
