Hey girls,
I just came back after spending 1 night at the hospital. I decided to go to the ER and they tested me. Well the doctor ordered me to stay the night so I can be observed. My EKG came back abnormal and I have a thyroid problem, probably hyperthyroidism.  So they ordered more tests and an echo of the heart. So the thing is I was shocked that actually something is wrong with my heart. Thankfully they said that the heart monitor didn't find anything wrong, they took the EKG again and it came out OK, but the echo revealed that there is a large amount of fluid in the heart, which could be serious but they need to find the cause. So they did release me today but I do have to follow up Monday and get the thyroid and the hear treated. Holy crap I'm scared about the fluid in the heart because that could be fatal!
The doctors were nice and all but the internist dint know very much about anorexia. OK so get this, he came is when I was eating and hes like well you are eating...as implying that my anorexia cant be serous. WTF? I told him I eat but NOT ENOUGH. And he was asking me why am I doing this. TO model? Again WTF? EDS are not about looking like a model. So I asked him how much should I weight since im 110 for 5"7. He said 115-120 is fine. Isnt that still in the underweight zone? I dont know I didnt like him that much. What do you guys think?
SO ya anyway I have to get in touch with the docs now as an outpatiient and contact an ED clinic.

aw im so sorry to hear about you having to be in the emergency room...hope everything turns out okay i wish you the best hun...keep me posted okay?

anyways some doctors can just be so idiotic sometimes...but you have to remember although they are doctors and they are extremely educated in the medical area...they could still be lacking in the ED section of things...they arent specialized in these things and you should probably just save your questions for the specialists.  For instance ive seen a few docs and only one was a specialist and the others were pretty incompitant when it came to eating disorders except for one who i actually really like...she only knew the basics though but she was so nice about everything and understanding and what not.

i personally wouldnt have been so shocked about the medical problems like you said you were....i mean you are a recovering anorexic and doing things like that can really hurt you medically...however this makes me think..should i get tests done to see if im okay??

i really sorry to hear about your experiance hun. In answer to your question about weight: 115lb -120lbs is still pretty underweight for you height. When i was 115 is was still really ill, i am now at 121lbs and you can still see my ribs which is definatly not a good sign. I think 130 is a better goal but its differant for everyone, you need to be whats healthy for you.

To your fluid in the heart, I replied to your other specific thread on it: http://caloriecount.about.com/fluid-heart-ft1 31609#2

It's good you've gone to start getting this all sorted. Hyperthyroidism and fluid on the heart are both potentially really serious complications so you do need to tackle them ASAP. But as well as that, you definitely need to gain and eat more.

Hyperthyroidism isn't hypermetabolism, I'll just clear that up before I start. But it does still result in weight loss as a possible complication. This means you're going to need to eat a lot, hun. 3000+. And yes, 115 to 120 is still too low! Like Butterfly said you want to aim more for 130. That intern sounds like an idiot, but I am glad your doctors were considerably more helpful! I'm really sorry about the stigma he put on you, too.

But, in all honesty? I hope the severity of this situation gives you a kick up the bum in starting recovery and taking it seriously. If you can, and if you haven't, talk to your doctor when you go back about your eating history and disorder. They can help you there too and they need to know if they're about to start treating you for what could easily be complications the result of your disordered eating and low weight.

Candycane- Why did you go to the ER? Obviously it was the right thing to do, since there was a problem that needs attention, but what were your symptoms?

I went because my heart was beating fast almost every other day and it was really starting to bother me. Other than that I have a lot of other symptoms I told them about. They said that it is because of the anorexia and my thyroid is off.

Yes Lala, this situation definetly did scare me. It is fatal if not treated. I need to make some doctors appointment this Monday, and talk things over with them. THen I will know more about my condition.

I will update everyone.
