Estimating Oil out of Sprayer

Quote  |  Reply
So I got a new oil sprayer. You just pump it up and magically you get a fine mist of oil on your pan when you spray instead of having to pour in a puddle of oil. I also spent a little extra money to get a really high quality extra virgin olive oil. Yum! The only problem is that I have no idea how to estimate how much oil I've eaten. Any great suggestions?

Very, very little.  Relax and don't even log it.

You need to estimate at what rate the oil comes out of the container. Ie, how many teaspoons per second. Then, when you are spraying the oil you can just time how long you have been spraying to get an idea how much oil you've added.

You can get an estimate on the rate by taking a small measuring cup and spraying oil into to while timing how long it takes to reach the first measure (say, 1/8th of a cup). Dividing the volume by the time will give you the spray rate.

where did you get your oil sprayer? i want one!

For 'simply2crazy'.  It really doesn't come out anything like as fast as 'teaspoons per second' and I think it would be borderline obsessive to take a stopwatch and a measuring cup to work out the tiny amount dispensed.   I have one of these and you'd need a LOT of determined spraying to get half a teaspoon of oil into the pan.  It's just a way to 'grease' the surface...

I love mine.
I have one as well, and love it!! no more Pam with it's nasty additives!!  I wouldn't worry about the calories from spraying. If you are just greasing your pan with a light spray, it would not be significant. Just use quality oil (evoo, canola, etc)

I got a pretty stainless steel one from Sur La Table, but I am pretty sure I've seen them most places that sell a lot of kitchen items. So far I love it.

tsp/sec was just an example measurement. She wanted a method to estimate it, so I provided one. I don't think it would be a bad idea to measure it and *then* decide if it's worth tracking. If you read through some of the forums, some people have had problems with Pam - they had no idea how much they were putting on and it was messing with their diets.
